Bolla Umesh asks: Sir, I have been using Minoxidil 5% for six months. I have not faced any problems and there has been hair growth too. However, recently I am facing itching issues on my scalp. Why it is happening and what steps should I take to control it? Please explain.

In response to Umesh Bolla’s query, Dr John Watts said that the alcohol content in Minoxidil can dry the scalp, especially during the winter season.

“In this condition, if one keeps itching excessively it may lead to excoriation, leaving the scalp skin damaged during repetitive scratching. The end result would be infection if it is not controlled,” said Dr John Watts.

While suggesting a possible remedy, Dr John told Umesh to wash his scalp the next day after using Minoxidil followed by Aloe Vera gel application on his hair. “This will add the necessary moisturiser to your hair and prevent further drying due to the use of Minoxidil the next time,” informed Dr John.

He also advised Umesh to take a regular head bath after using Minoxidil but warned him not to use shampoo regularly during winter as the surfactant in the shampoo can minimise the moisturise and dry the hair.
