Zombies as we know them have their origins in Haitian and African folklore, where they were believed to be reanimated corpses controlled by sorcerers. The concept evolved in pop culture through the 20th century, gaining prominence in George A. Romero's 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead." Romero's movie marked the shift from voodoo-based zombies to the modern, flesh-eating and contagious kind undead.
