048 // Going Light with Joe Hollier & Kaiwei Tang of Light Phone
This week's conversation is one full of hope and liberation because we're joined by Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang, co-founders of Light and creators of the Light phone. As Light describes themselves, "Light is a radically different technology company. We design beautiful tools that respect and empower our users." We discuss what life feels like when we reclaim our autonomy, attention, and intention by turning our phone back into a tool that works for us, rather than us being caught in cycles of addiction (because smartphones and apps are psychologically addictive and designed to be so). And gosh, is Light the complete opposite of that. Whether you've been swearing to get a flip phone for the past five years (me) or you can't imagine life without your iPhone, this conversation full of tips and anecdotes is for you! Come fall in love with what life can be like when you go Light. Share with a friend... because sharing this energy is caring ✨ Friends who fuel friends to be well and live fully are true friends! 047 // The Empowerment in Walking Away with Alex Modzelewski

047 // The Empowerment in Walking Away with Alex Modzelewski
Today's conversation explores the ultimate question of "When do I walk away from something?" through Alex's graciousness to share her story with us.  It is a powerful reflection on cultural ideas around "quitting" that are deeply ingrained in many of us - is choosing something new or different quitting? What is quitting? Why might our view of endings prevent us from letting go of what no longer serves us and stepping into what can? What we learn through this journey is that walking away is a liberator and catalyst for growth and expansion. I don't call that quitting, I call that empowerment.    Alex is a Liberal Studies student at NYU with a passion for mental, physical, and nutritional health in student athletes. Having been a student athlete, Alex understands the need for coaching to evolve. 044 // The Darkness of the Winter Solstice
We’re going on a journey into the dark depths of our being to feel the heaviness of winter and reap the benefits of doing so before the festival of light in the holiday season. Many of us feel a sadness during these “merry” times be it loss, grief, loneliness, or unhealed wounds that surface. It chokes us when we suppress it; when we try to avoid it; when we don’t make space to hold ourselves. Here, humbly, is that invitation and space. I hope it serves. Come with us on the moving and motivating conversation journey that will leave you feeling revitalized, inspired, and full of hope. Growing up Anna suffered from night terrors, which grew into anxiety and panic attacks. She overcame both through meditation. As a mom, Anna wanted to give her children the same beneficial tool. We're diving into a (long) conversation I had (don't worry, timestamps below) many moons ago with videographer, fine artist, and YouTuber, Sam Lewis (better known on the internet as SLEW) in his Brooklyn studio. Among many reasons, I was curious to talk to Sam because his flourishing on his own, self-made path is not the norm from where we’re from. We both attended the same school in Connecticut and, (as you can imagine) I resonate with and am fascinated by those that take (and make) their own way despite their environment's messaging.   Thus I HAD to hear and share his journey to inspire folks to see through his mirror - anything is possible and we are rewarded for authentically contributing to the world our unique gifts and interests.  Sam and I philosophize about art, social media, film, living authentically and so much more, so grab a cup of tea or a Yerba Mate and come with us on this conversational journey. 040 // Conscious Conversations with Jules Bonasera
I sat down with Jules Bonasera, the founder and creator of Conscious Conversations the card game for a curious conversation about ~ life ~ Jules created this game to bring us closer, deeper by asking the big questions of ourselves and each other. As we say on As It Goes, "conversations help us along the way." We cover a broad range of topics as we philosophize and ask some deep questions from the game. Conversations like these are food for the soul; I live for them. Come along with us! Guaranteed: a novel outcome.   We begin with how Conscious Conversations was born from a dark time (01:09), the magic that happens when we peel back layers of ourselves for deep conversations and get vulnerable (03:15), and the power of introducing new questions to break up repetitive thinking (06:29). Jules shares some research on secrets to a good life and the role of our connections (10:35). Then Jules explains a beautiful, simple, yet profound gratitude meditation to do before each meal and highlights how RE SELF helps us make this our authentic way of being (16:55). Next we discuss greed, individualism, and embracing our humanness while holding ourselves accountable with compassion to do better (20:50). We then talk about childhood trauma and trauma as part of our human experience, acceptance as medicine, and the empowerment that comes from reframing our past narrative (24:47) before Jules shares how a tree taught her about intergenerational trauma (30:12). Then we answer a question from the deck: What book has inspired you the most & why?...hint: depression & presence (34:40). Then we riff on the spiritual dimension of being human and fighting for the future by being our authentic self (49:25). Jules offers us an essential reminder and story about why philanthropy and contributing to the Good of Being is not a big to-do (57:43). We discuss sparking conversations with strangers & shifting our perspective to hope as Jules shares a deeply moving story that brings us both to tears and a simple, powerful way to shift a bad day (1:02:21). We answer two more questions from the deck: You have the opportunity to meet Jesus, Buddha, or Muhammad, what do you talk about? 039 // Why Living Consciously & Authentically is the Antidote to Our Problems
Jun 21 2022
039 // Why Living Consciously & Authentically is the Antidote to Our Problems
How do we live a good life? What is a good life? This question is one of the greatest philosophical questions and its answer is why RE SELF exists. We’re talking about how conscious, authentic living fosters contentment, meaning, and flourishing, i.e. the "what" and "how to" of living a good life, fully, and the link between one's good life and the Good of Being. We start with equations for dissatisfaction and contentment (01:53), discerning what is inauthentic and unconscious within us (15:05) and nourishing our authenticity and conscious nature (24:42). We discuss how and why to create our authentic, handmade life (27:32). Then we dive into our birthright of living consciously and authentically (33:43), the complexity of being human and how each human’s authenticity empowers us (36:51). We look at the role of presence in conscious, authentic living, the hero’s journey (39:31), and the fulfillment of being authentic (48:35). How this enables our living in harmony with the deep truth of life, Oneness, ourselves as Oneness, and why this is life-changing to live it (55:24). We discuss how we live consciously and authentically (1:07:27), why RE SELF exists (1:32:48), and some ways to enact and integrate this conversation today (1:36:08). 038 // Art in Our Human Experience with Marco Santini

038 // Art in Our Human Experience with Marco Santini
Art is a uniquely human endeavour. For that, it is fascinating to explore why we, as animals, have this internal drive to create and share art. In this episode of the series “_____ in Our Human Experience,” I sat down with artist and mentor Marco Santini to discuss his work and the importance of art in our lives. One question I didn’t ask Marco was, “Are we all creative?” Upon reflection, I believe I didn’t ask, not because I forgot, but because I remember - we are all creative. Creativity expresses itself differently through each of us. Why? Because we are the continuation of Creation itself. Creativity isn’t relegated to only the creation of art. Creativity, at its core, is the expression of authenticity, the sharing of our gifts (however that looks for each of us) - in doing so, we create and live a “handmade” life. That is the ultimate creation. Join Us in the Real World: https://www.reself.me/join-us  I announce the launch of RE SELF's private community space (1:10) before talking about how Marco got started (3:09). Then we discuss art as a career and what comes from moving past debilitating limiting mindsets around taking that leap of faith (5:54). Marco shares about mentoring to create “confidence to share your creativity” so more people share their gifts with the world (9:23). We explore the necessity of art beyond “beauty” and aesthetics and why Marco says, “art is not about the physical piece at all. art is about storytelling" (10:36). Through Marco's engaged creative process and mural, we highlight the immense impact of asking deeply valuable questions such as “what do I value” in community (13:00), which leads Marco to tell the story of how we met and the beauty of art creating connections (18:05). He shares about following his interest to study linguistic anthology in university and the shift from anthropology and understanding the broad diversity of humanity to realizing his real core love was going into communities understanding who they are and representing them as they are (20:18). Naturally, this highlights how surrendering to what is often allows it to turn out better than we planned (24:50). We dive into what is art and why is it necessary (27:29) before I ask Marco the worst question one could ask an artist, “what’s your favourite piece?” (31:53). Then Marco shares about being an artist in the 21st century and his perspective on "the necessary evil of social media" (33:36) before discussing NFT’s, the RE SELF invitation “join us in the real world,” and my photography series I developed during COVID (41:24). 037 // Conscious Consumption with Ashley & Cierra of IN BOLD PRINT.
I sat down on a sunny afternoon with Ashley Pradhan and Cierra Valor co-founders of In Bold Print. to talk about the role of conscious consumption, business, and their venture in conscious living. We discuss creating a conscious business, intentionality in relationships, embracing discomfort and the unknown, working cyclically, balance, fulfillment, and freedom. Whether you’re interested in entrepreneurship, business, or not, this conversation offers so much nourishment for us to apply to all aspects of our own journeys as we gather and share our unique experiences and perspectives collected along the way, especially when they are different from our experiences and interests. IN BOLD PRINT. is a venture-backed startup with a product sustainability scoring platform for brands and retailers, making it easy for us as consumers to normalize conscious consumption as our way of being. (Could RE SELF be more aligned?!) We announce RE SELF’s FREE Radiant Loving-Kindness Meditation and explore why this practice is so life-changing (01:17). Ashley and Cierra join me and introduce themselves (05:14), taking a moment to discuss boxing and finding movement that resonates with your unique being (06:37). We naturally discuss balancing interests in our lives and how that can look in our relationships (10:57). (Finally) we get to IN BOLD PRINT. (17:48) and conscious consumption (20:20). We highlight the joy of repurposing “waste” and creating a second life for it (26:10) before hearing Cierra’s and Ashley’s journeys to being conscious consumers (34:24). Then Ashley provides us with a framework to begin or evolve our conscious consumption (40:11). We dive into creating a conscious business from the inside out (56:51) through introspection, humanness, and openness; balancing the masculine and feminine in business as fundamental (1:03:25). 036 // Experiencing Oneness & Ourselves as Oneness
May 10 2022
036 // Experiencing Oneness & Ourselves as Oneness
We’re talking about the ever-illusive, abstract Oneness - what it is, why it’s essential for understanding ourselves and reality, how to experience it and ourselves as manifestations of oneness in our everyday lives. We begin looking at our modern context and the role of conscious living and oneness as an essential part of our evolution from where we find ourselves today. (01:42) We break down ‘what is oneness’? (6:26) and why begin with our suffering to experience oneness and its role in our development as a fully actualized human (10:36). From there we must eliminate all that antagonizes our experience and embodiment of oneness (19:37). We get into those practices that empower our experience of oneness and ourselves as oneness (33:46), with an interim to touch on “food of the gods” (51:36). We end with which RE SELF resources can offer support as you begin to intentionally practice experiencing oneness (1:07:14). 035 // Signs & Synchronicities
We’re talking about those seemingly magical moments of meaning happening all around us - signs from the universe and synchronicities. Exploring the ways in which meaningful coincidences occur and opening up to their deeply profound meaning and guidance, we discuss what we can do with these occurrences and how we can use them to empower us on our journeys. We ease into the conversation by talking about the joy of candles and Bilden Farmacy’s candles before introducing examples signs and synchronicities (02:28). We take a moment to address our skepticism with openness and some research related to the subject (05:44). We divulge into (as one must in this context) talking about the question: Is life meaningful or do we give it meaning? (15:09) before we can discuss what signs add to our daily lived experience of life, interconnection and guidance on our path and truth (24:49). Then we discuss and define synchronicities according to Carl Jung and sings according to Laura Lynn Jackson (27:04). Pausing to discuss the perspective of “crossing over” as an alternative to “passing away”, the Buddhist perspective on death, and the necessity of feeding our soul with the “mystical” (28:26). Returning to signs, we review some examples of signs received from the book, my life, and what Laura calls “default signs” (34:03). We reflect on the necessary role of becoming an active participant in receiving signs and synchronicities (41:41) before returning to Jung and the roles of symbols (signs, and synchronicities) in our lives (43:12) to illuminate the meaning present in our existence and lives (46:16). Finally, concluding with quick tips on how to get started and be an active participant in asking for and receiving signs and synchronicities (50:12). 034 // Being a Human in Process Part 2
We’re picking up where we left off talking about being a “human in process.” In part two of this conversation, we breakdown an example of allowing experience to be our teacher and the profound impact it has when we do so - contributing to living a purposeful life, nurturing our natural intelligence and committing to being in process so we bloom in our authentic purpose, relax into and embrace where we are in process, and "walk each other home."  We start by looking at an example of how these experiences serve as our teachers when we allow them to be (00:48), having these opportunities every day to practice (12:42). By doing so, we allow them to contribute to our process, purpose, and freedom (14:21) and be grateful for them all (25:44). Which, feeds the conditions for our natural intelligence to grow us (29:08) by committing to being in process (33:33). Ultimately, empowering us to relax into being in process and lean into the truth that “we’re all just walking each other home” (34:58). Then we breathe into taking it easy on ourselves - being patient and embracing the season of our lives, knowing the truth that everything is always changing (36:19) and the importance of sticking with our practices for our well-being and wakefulness through every season (39:46). Finally, we discuss bringing playfulness into the process when we get caught up (42:22) and giving up the need for the process to come to fruition (44:21). 034 // Being a Human in Process Part 1
We’re talking about embracing the journey and truth of being a “human in process.” In part one of this conversation, we discuss what it means and looks like to be a human in process, an inner journey and one we take together - embracing a curiosity to learn all we do not know from every experience and honouring our innate inner wisdom and completeness while doing so and exploring the ways we’ve been taught that contradicts our worthiness and authenticity. We start the conversation discussing the Sanskrit word ‘satsang’ and the link between caring about justice in the world and doing the inner work to live consciously and be peace - there’s no better time than now. To introduce the topic, we sink into a brief meditation on “being in process” (04:08) explore the metaphor of a tattoo sleeve as being in process (5:37), and what it means to be in process (09:09). We discuss embracing “I know I know nothing” - all leading us back to authenticity and living consciously (19:19). Then we visit the internalized sense of not being enough and where that comes from (23:23). Through our example of internalizing systems of oppression, we discuss the role of sober curiosity and reforming our relationship with substances for clarity, meeting our needs, and authenticity (33:18). Finally leading us to the understanding that everything we need is already within us (42:08) and we are alone together on this journey in process (43:22), with our life experience being our greatest teacher (45:22). 033 // Peace Begins Within
In light of the crisis in Ukraine, we’re talking about peace - how world peace begins in each of us through our embodying peace everyday and transforming suffering to peace. This moment, right now, is the reason we do the work to be peace - not the reason we stop trying or give up on peace. If you’re heartbroken about what we’re witnessing in Ukraine, this conversation is for you. Join us or jump around using the timestamps below. Spread peace by donating to support Ukraine Crisis Relief 🇺🇦 We start this conversation by acknowledging the confusion and powerlessness we feel right now (00:50) and why the practices we’ll introduce are essential for us to do in times like these (02:35). We start with naming what we’re feeling and sitting with this discomfort (04:50) and what that looks like in practice (05:51). Diving into those actions we can take, obviously we start with donating (10:09) and going beyond donations when we think that’s the only thing we can do (10:55). I share two examples (11:59) of how moments like these wake us up to feel what really matters, our everyday blessings (14:09), and bring us face to face with our interconnection (14:45). We let this crisis affect, change, and transform us so it’s not completely in vain (21:27) - we be more courageous (25:14), compassionate (30:03), and spend our money aligned with our deepest values (34:33). Then we discuss (36:49) and practice Tonglen meditation (37:46) as a way to take suffering and transform it to relief. We highlight the importance of moving from sympathy to empathy and how to to that (47:18). We discuss how, like peace, nonviolence begins with us and how to practice nonviolence (48:38). Finally we briefly touch on how we can be freedom (57:06). 032 // Embodying Love Part 2
We’re talking about love - what is genuine love, self-love, love as a practice, and so much more. Centered around the understanding that our love for ourselves shapes our capacity to love others, we explore how we can embody love from our limitless internal source of love that is our innate ability to love unconditionally. Dive into this juicy episode or jump around the episode (we added timestamps below) to learn how to experience more love by connecting to and embodying love from within. After breaking down our ideas and beliefs around love in Part 1, Part 2 dives into the four key aspects of genuine love and how to practice each beginning with ourselves. We dive deep into those four aspects of true love (02:08): loving-kindness (02:24), compassion (05:32), joy (09:05), and equanimity (13:43). Bringing us to defining unconditional love (16:05), which is empowered by these aspects - allowing our love to be healing, transformative, returning to our True Nature, and deeply meaningful (17:19). We then explore love’s ability to return us to our True Nature deeper through The Symposium and Socrates’ definition of the purpose of love compared to another idea of love that shapes our modern conception of love (20:06). Wrapping up the discussion, we concur that love is a practice (29:06), it starts with ourselves, it empowers our conscious living and meaning, and ways to practice each of the four aspects of true love (32:35). Finally, we discover how our ability to love ourselves directly feeds world peace (44:01).
