One of R&B Musics most beloved and consistently popular vocal groups, the platinum-selling song stylists known as The Whispers are remembered for #1 R&B crossover songs such as “Rock Steady” and “And the Beat Goes On” just as well as they are known for their classic slow jams such as “Lady” and “In the Mood.” Now, they are about to explode in the dance market with GRAMMY® Award winning DJ Maurice Joshua’s Steppers and House remixes of the group’s 2009 gem, “Praise His Holy Name” (Kingdom Records). As they approach their sixth decade in the music business, the Whispers are ensuring that the beat goes on. Maurice Joshua, who has remixed a who’s who in Pop music ranging from Missy Elliott to Janet Jackson, won a GRAMMY® Award for his remix of Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” He takes the Whispers’ gospel track “Praise His Holy Name” and creates two alluring remixes. The first is a smooth, uptown Chicago Steppers’ groove and the second is a full House groove. Over the years, several of the group’s songs have hit Billboard’s dance charts. “One for the Money” was their first entry in 1976 and 1984’s “Contagious” was the last entry. After 50 R&B chart singles, seven gold and two platinum albums; The Whispers recorded the inspirational album, Thankful (Kingdom Records), in 2009 as a way of paying their gratitude to their fans and to God. The album, produced by gospel great Fred Hammond, peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and remained on the survey for 45 weeks. Its success was propelled by the silky soulful radio single “Thou Art with Me.” The group performed songs from the project on television programs such as BET’s “Bobby Jones Gospel” and “The Mo’Nique Show.” “There’s a constant reminder when you see people come out in vast numbers and spend their hard-earned dollars to see you,” Nick once said. “They are a blessing to you. They don’t have to love you and your music. God has been really good to The Whispers. He was looking out for us when we were ignoring Him. We lived long enough for him to allow us to make this [gospel music] to inspire people to get closer to God.” Aside from numerous GRAMMY®, American Music, and Soul Train Music Award nominations, the group has earned an NAACP Image Award, the Recording Academy’s San Francisco Chapter GRAMMY® Governor’s Award, and they have been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. In 2022, they received The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony at the Cannery Casino Hotel Resort in Las Vegas.
