Christine Langdon on More Sustainable Gifting at The Good Registry

The Purpose Effect

Nov 28 2022 • 43 mins

This year, it’s estimated that 8.3 billion dollars will be spent on unwanted gifts.  Households that celebrate Christmas produce 30% more waste at this time of year.  Millions and millions of portions of food are wasted including enough gravy to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool.

How can we gift better?  How can we gift more sustainably? More mindfully?  To find out, I spoke with Christine Langdon, co-founder and Chief of Good at The Good Registry

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How to better direct the money we are spending;
  • How 'sustainable gifts' stop being sustainable if you are getting more than one of them;
  • The amount of waste created at Christmas;
  • How online returns often end up in landfill;
  • Mindful gift ideas;
  • Educating our children (and re-educating ourselves) about what a good gift is.  It doesn't have to be 'new', it doesn't have to be a 'thing', it should be local and it should be as ethical and sustainable as possible;
  • Changing gifting habits.

I'll be publishing a good gift guide soon!  Look out for it on Instagram or on the website.
