Phil emphasized the need to understand and manage risks, and the correlation between leadership and risk-taking and how this influences decision makers. We know there are no guarantees in any venture (or are there?) and so Phil highlighted the importance of using tools to help predict success and simply “having a go”. He encourages taking risks and learning from the process, as it can lead to enhanced entrepreneurial vision and growth.Throughout the conversation, Phil emphasized the importance of a growth mindset and learning from challenges. He reflected on his experience of struggling with the pandemic and how he reframed it as an opportunity for growth. Am I in joy or fear?•                Learn to transform fear to joy and believe you can do it•                Making a commitment to do something with someone else helps drive the motivation – and that’s what Deniz did when she committed to swim the English channel•                Find the right support team and you can do anything•                Learn how Deniz accepted that the cold became her teacher – physically and mentally•                Start small… even a short cold shower has benefits!!!•                Dreaming helps embed your challenge in your mind•                What Deniz learned from her swim from Robben Island to Cape Town!•                There’s science behind focussing on what you want – where your thoughts go your energy flows•                Deniz’s message to her younger self: Remember you are more powerful; you can do it; you can create your own reality; you should stand up for your yourself!•                Body, mind and soul control – it’s all within our reach! •                What can you take away that you can use in your life today?[1:00:55] END------------   The End   ------------ Learn More: visit the Ignium https://www.igniumconsult.comSubscribe for more exclusive content in the Ignium Spark Tank https://www.igniumconsult.com/the-spark-tankListen to the show: https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/episodesConnect with Deniz: https://www.outofourcomfortzone.com/On Instagram: @swimmerpsychologisthttps://www.instagram.com/swimmerpsychologist/channel/ Learn more about Scaling Up: https://scalingup.com/ Books Referenced in this episode: Out Of Comfort Zone: Cutting Edge Business Lessons Based on Sports Psychology from the Experience of an Extreme Swimmer, Deniz Kayadelen: https://bit.ly/3Jr12Tb Sign Up to our Ignium Bi Monthly Newsletter https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/subscribe Connect on LinkedIn Phil Rose https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachphilrose/Follow Phil on Twitter https://twitter.com/malabarman Keywords in this episode: Purpose, scaling Up, Comfort zone, Mindset, Joyfulness, Joy, challenge, Deniz Kayadelen, coaching, EY, Culture Download Links: Search ‘Sparks by Ignium’ Series Website: https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/j1fShjpk3K30Yl4K2Fga

Moving to Intentional Mastery with William Buist
(Some of) The main points for listeners:•             What can you do to move to mastery, intentionally•             Seeing the glass half full versus half empty•             How not buying into the recession will save your business•             What’s in your control and what CAN you control – it’s a matter of focus•             Start with knowing you own skills…•             You cannot NOT market•             What we can learn from the actions of some business owners during the lockdown period – it’s a matter of perspective•             How fear, uncertainty & doubt left some of the turkeys on the shelf at Christmas•             The journey to mastery… we all start as explorers keen to gather knowledge…•             Experts to Masters… it’s an intentional step•             Out of every 100 businesses that start… only 20 will succeed in the first instance – business founders need to be aware that sometimes it’s things outside of our control that make the biggest impact•             Circumstances don’t play any part in how we choose to react… consider that…•             Having an understanding of our purpose drives the journey to mastery•             How our hobbies can enable us to take a different view of what we do and how we do it•             No one else has had the same journey as you – we all bring a unique journey to the world•             The parallels with learning to drive… moving up the ladder from unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence to conscious competence and on to unconscious competence•             The decision to go to mastery comes from a recognition that we want to pass it on to the future•             The key is being able to pass it on… not just to learn it… it’s about teaching… and education and that’s about making it conscious again•             It’s about exploring with people ‘what is it you find difficult about X?’•             Why it’s important to find a coach or mentor to help us improve•             Find what brings you joy… and know that our journey is one of contentment•             Our best work comes from being intentional when we do it…•             William’s Tip… don’t take yourself too seriouslyLearn More: visit the Ignium https://www.igniumconsult.comSubscribe for more exclusive content in the Ignium Spark Tank https://www.igniumconsult.com/the-spark-tankListen to the show: https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/episodesConnect with William at Williambuist.comTake the online audit at audit.Williambuist.comLearn more about Scaling Up: https://scalingup.com/Books Referenced in this episode: Intentional Mastery: Step Beyond your Expertise and Build Better Business, William Buist: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intentional-Mastery-Beyond-Expertise-Business/dp/1912300621 A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas, Warren Berger: https://bit.ly/3ws83eC Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It...and Why the Rest Don't (Rockefeller Habits 2.0) https://amzn.eu/d/a6bMZP2 Sign Up to our Ignium Bi Monthly Newsletter https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/subscribe Connect on LinkedIn Phil Rose https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachphilrose/Join The Building Better Business Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/coachedbyphil Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/malabarman Keywords in this episode: Purpose, scaling Up, Mastery, Entrepreneurship, Joyfulness, intention, Warren Berger, Verne Harnish, coaching, mentoring, Culture
Learn how John Ratliff drove employee engagement through focussing on culture and how that multiplied the value of his business long term

Learn how John Ratliff drove employee engagement through focussing on culture and how that multiplied the value of his business long term
In this episode of Sparks by Ignium Phil Rose talks in-depth to John Ratliff. John built, scaled and exited Appletree Answers as a 23 year old in his back room to an international business with 650 employees for a multiple 5 times that of other similar businesses. He first met Verne Harnish in 2005 as part of the Birthing of Giants programme. He is now the CEO of Align 5 where his team helps others scale and exit. He talks openly about the highs and lows of his journey and shares his wisdom on how you can find the ‘Rembrandt in the attic’ of your business.(Some of) The main points for listeners:•             There’s value in having the whole team go through the learning of Scaling Up•             Why starting from scratch is so much harder than acquiring a good business•             How buying as business with debt helps entrepreneurs really scale•             As a teenager John always knew he’d be an entrepreneur – do you know if you are one?•             When your company is big enough that you don’t know everyone’s name you need a senior team•             How a person responsible for ‘employee happiness’ really drives engagement•             How to drive employee turnover DOWN through full focus•             John’s ‘Dream On’ process drove employee turnover from 110% down to 18%•             Recognise that you’re never going to get 100% buy in… so build your process for the majority!•             Build your employee handbook that treats employees like adults!•             What can I do today to make the employee experience better than yesterday?•             How creating rituals around simple things really drives satisfaction•             How great office space and design really supports your frontline employees•             Purpose – it’s more an issue of authenticity… otherwise people will see through your actions.•             If you don’t truly believe in the actions you are taking don’t do them!•             As an entrepreneur if you don’t wake up everyday unbelievably grateful that people show up in your business to bring YOUR dreams to life you’re in the wrong business•             Remember people have a choice about where they work!•             What can you tell about the general manager at a hotel just by looking at the way the team work together!•             Spend your money on the employee experience to enable your people to drive your customer experience through creating your brand promise•             Nothing good comes from mediocre experience•             Build a business on a foundation of culture, skills and talent with purpose at the core•             The link between purpose, values, culture and systems and the value of your business•             How John saw the Aeron chair as the canary in the coal mine•             John’s advice to his 22 year old self… •             How it’s the highs and the lows that really do make our succesS Learn More: visit the Ignium https://www.igniumconsult.comSubscribe for more exclusive content in the Ignium Spark Tank https://www.igniumconsult.com/the-spark-tankListen to the show: https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/episodesConnect with John at Align 5 https://align5.comLearn more about Scaling Up: https://scalingup.com/ Books Referenced in this episode: Mastering the Rockefeller Habits: What You Must Do to Increase the Value of Your Growing Firm https://amzn.eu/d/3gSfz0O Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It...and Why the Rest Don't (Rockefeller Habits 2.0) https://amzn.eu/d/a6bMZP2 The Heart of Business: Leadership Principles for the Next Era of Capitalism https://amzn.eu/d/6U9Qzek Sign Up to our Ignium Bi Monthly Newsletter https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/subscribe Connect on LinkedIn Phil Rose https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachphilrose/Kerry Jarred https://www.linkedin.com/in/kerry-jarred-jarredconsulting/ Join The Building Better Business Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/coachedbyphil Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/malabarman Keywords in this episode: Purpose, scaling Up, Scale, Entrepreneur, Success, Purpose Driven, John Ratliff, Secret Sauce, coaching, 10X thinking, Entrepreneurs Organisation, BHAG Download Links: Search ‘Sparks by Ignium’ Series Website: https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/ And here's the download links for this Episode: https://feeds.transistor.fm/sparks https://share.transistor.fm/s/a835ea28 https://sparksbyignium.transistor.fm/episodes/how-john-ratliff-drove-employee-engagement-through-focussing-on-culture-and-how-that-drove-the-value-of-his-business-long-term https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/sparks-by-ignium/id1525777023 https://open.spotify.com/episode/57toKXyDgyrKG9CVyw3Jd8
