S4 Episode 3 What’s Hot in Sustainable Investing? with Jim Totty.

THE IMPACT INTERVIEW

Nov 30 2022 • 43 mins

Welcome to Episode 3.

My guest this week is Jim Totty, one of the most experienced sustainability investors in the UK, with over 25 years in the sector, mostly in private equity. He started out as a scientist, gaining a PhD from Imperial College in the 1990s and most recently led the Investment strategy as Managing Partner at Earth Capital for over a decade. He’s as well-qualified as anyone to help us understand the evolution of sustainable investing, where we are now and how the sector is likely to develop in the immediate future.

This is a really educational overview of the sustainability market from an investor’s perspective, with a positive message on investment opportunities and the potential outperformance of sustainable business models, driven largely by LPs. He talks about the UK as a leading hub of innovation in a range of cleantech sectors.

He sounds a note of caution on hydrogen while seeing huge potential for wind (floating offshore wind in particular). He talks about the vital importance of renewable energy storage and the potential (in food and agri) of industrializing biological processes.

Jim identifies what he sees as the investment sweet spot, and is excited about massive renewable opportunities in Africa.

This is a great guide to the market for a relative newcomer like me, with plenty of takeaways for seasoned investors too.
