Kate dives deep into her recent production, 20 Grains of Rice, a performance which explores themes of Japanese Canadian identity. The story starts as Kate finds herself as part of one of three non-white families growing up in Elmira and follows a journey of struggle to maintain culture in a different country. The process involved uncovering hushed stories of intergenerational trauma and injustices. Later in the conversation, Kate explores the challenges faced by women balancing work-life balance as both mothers and artists, highlighting a need for a cultural shift in the arts towards boundaries and flexibility to allow for inclusivity.
