Outside of the American president Trump, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is probably the most famous denialist president during the pandemic. Brash, authoritarian, and misogynist, he treated mitigation measures like masks and social distancing as an affront to his agenda and himself. In this first of three parts, we examine the man's history, how he managed to get elected, and how he and the country reacted when COVID first hit.
