Stefanie Nelson (English)
Stefanie Nelson is the Founder and Artistic Director of Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup (SND) a contemporary performance group based in NYC, and DANCE ITALIA, a month-long, international, summer dance program in Lucca, IT, as well as Motore592, a new cultural center opening soon in Lucca, Italy. Nelson’s work as a choreographer has been described as ‘instinctual, untamed, and edgy’ (Eva Yaa Asanantewaa) known for an intuitive approach that distills deeply personal ideas into highly kinetic, expressive, and provocative works of art, rooted in cross-media collaboration with artists working in music, video, and visual arts. Nelson has extensive experience in designing and teaching dance-based educational programs both locally and internationally since 1997. Since 2015 Nelson leads the Dance Initiative at AHRC NYC, a disabilities service organization. Having danced with many local New York City choreographers, Nelson also works on independent choreographic projects. Highlights include feature film Plan-B, starring Diane Keaton, NY Fashion Week, and the NYC store opening of Flying Tiger. Nelson served as a Choreography panelist for New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowships, was selected as an NYFA 'Emerging Leader' in the field of dance for a year-long mentorship in Arts Administration, and was an NYFA mentor for the 2018 & 2019 cohort of ‘Emerging Leaders’. Recent support for her work includes the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, and the US Small Business Administration.
