Alexis Goodwin on Texas Hill Country, the Hospitality Industry, and Following Your Heart

Alexis Goodwin on Texas Hill Country, the Hospitality Industry, and Following Your Heart
Alexis Goodwin is the General Manager of an independent, boutique-style hotel in Blanco, Texas. The Blanco River Hotel is our "home base" for Wine Camp this Fall (September 19-21, 2024) in Texas Hill Country!Alexis and I discuss the area, including so many things to do, a variety of restaurants, some breweries and distilleries, and of course, we mention some of the wineries and prime locations for tasting! For my "vino loving friends", Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area is the 3rd largest AVA in the US, with over 9 million acres and at least 100 wineries in the heart of Texas. And, Bell Mountain and Fredericksburg AVAs are microclimates within that large, Texas Hill Country AVA. Texas vineyards and wine makers produce varietals commonly found in Italy, France, and Spain. And, you can find many award-winning wines in the 30-some wineries situated in the 30-mile stretch of Highway 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. Are you thirsty yet? I am!! For more information and to register for Wine Camp, visit: https://pennyforyourshots.com/wine-campFor Reservations, call the Blanco River Hotel directly at (830) 833-5697 and mention "Wine Camp" to receive the $139 rate. That number, the link to register, and some additional information are in today's episode's show notes.Alexis and I also chat about her career in hospitality. She is driven, and focused on following opportunities where they lead. And on following her heart! We chat about Alexis finding "her person". Or more accurately, about allowing your person to be revealed to you in the Right Time.We also talk a bit about her mother, who as an entrepreneur AND a single mother, raised 3 kids in the 90s. She clearly set a wonderful example for her daughter. I hope you'll join me in Texas Hill Country this Fall and meet Alexis in person! Christi Fitzgerald, on Career Choices, Hybrid Vehicles, and Cocktails

Christi Fitzgerald, on Career Choices, Hybrid Vehicles, and Cocktails
Most of my guests (and my audience) are women ...umm... of a certain age, like me, who have "been there, done that". Many of us are in that next phase of life where we're rediscovering ourselves, or may be approaching a change... kids going off to college, friends nearing retirement... not "more time on our hands" but more ... "I want to make an impact and I want to have more fun!"Occasionally, I interview younger guests and it brings me back to earlier days. Days when I was in the thick of career growth and looking for the next promotion. I remember what it felt like to be "in the hunt" and trying to prove myself. And many times, it felt like I was repeating that process of trying to prove myself over and over. Today's guest is indeed younger....she's one of my nieces. She is definitely brilliant, and hearing her story was at times difficult.... she is worthy. Just being her. She deserves to feel valued (which she DOES ... Now). She's had to prove herself a few times, and put up with a micromanager. Wait until you hear the level of "micromanagement" she endured... Christi is competitive by nature. She loves the thrill of any game; and definitely loves winning! And she's not afraid of hard work. She has done most of the home improvement projects around her new home in Texas, including installing a fence around her entire property. By.Herself! You'll hear a bit about her move in this episode, too.Join us for Wine Camp in Texas Hill Country this September. You can find more information about that at my website: https://www.pennyforyourshots.com/wine-camp/Here is, my niece, Christi Fitzgerald.Wine Camp! It's a THING! Wine Camp Registration Now Open! with Robin Hackney

Wine Camp Registration Now Open! with Robin Hackney
This week's episode is a little different in that I'm not releasing an interview, but rather announcing more details about Wine Camp! In case you missed it, one of my former leaders, Robin Hackney, who now has her own podcast (called Spandex & Wine) and I are planning a retreat for our people this Fall. We're calling it Wine Camp, and it's happening September 19-21...this year... 2024... in Texas Hill Country. Back when we were wine guides together, every year, our company would put on an annual event where we'd come together to learn about wine, and more than anything, create community with each other. We'd taste A L-O-T of wine, share fun experiences, grow and laugh together. It was a BLAST. We wanted to keep meeting fellow wine lovers, make new friends and deepen old friendships, learn a little bit, and above all, have so. Much. FUN!So, we created our own retreat. And we're calling it Wine Camp!We hope you'll join us this Fall. To sign up for updates and get the latest information, go to wine-camp.pennyforyourshtos.com Registration is now open, and we're limiting the experience to the first 50 who sign up, so grab your wine besties and secure your spots as soon as possible. Here are the details. The "Fab 4" - My Podcast Accountability Group
One of the greatest experiences of my podcasting class was being placed into "accountability pods" where small groups could choose to meet up regularly, inspire, and lift each other up. My Pod of 4 incredible women has met every Wednesday, sharing ideas, challenging each other, and keeping each other on track. This week, I'm sharing our first recorded conversation where we collaborated to ask each other the questions we normally ask our podcast guests. The answers were surprising and entertaining! As background, here's a bit about each of my new-ish friends. Alison Fraser grew up in the United Kingdom, and now lives in New Zealand. She works a full time job (she started her career as a journalist), is a wife and mom, enjoys Park Runs nearly every weekend, and has TWO podcasts! Women Who Podcast and Our Scotland. I'll post a link to these and to Robin's and Becca's podcasts in my show notes. You're going to want to check them out!Becca Ingersoll is a wife and mom of special needs twins. She's on a mission to support other women and parents who are facing challenges, including childhood cancers and other medical struggles. She wants you to know, "You're not alone" and shares her podcast Finding Joy through Life's Trials.Robin Hackney has been a friend for a long time! We went through the podcasting class together and are now collaborating on a retreat to Texas Hill Country in the Fall of 2024. Robin has her own fitness business and her podcast is called Spandex and Wine, because it's all about finding balance.I learned a lot about my friends and hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Maria Romano, Las Vegas Wedding Officiant, Speaker, and Coach
Maria Romano is in the "Love Business", but the skills she teaches apply to more than just those looking for romance. We're talking Leadership Riz, Y'all!Much like you're told to put your own oxygen mask on first when you fly, she emphasizes that you need to take care of Yourself first. How we start our day is a choice, and Maria gives us tips on how to begin each day on a positive note. Before becoming a wedding officiant, Maria spent 35 years in the rental car industry. How she found the wedding industry is a fun story! Today, she not only officiates around 100 wedding ceremonies each month, she also trains others on getting ordained, coaches newly single people in how to put themselves back out there, and translates these soft skills for businesses and corporations looking to develop employees. We had a fascinating conversation on Leap Day this year, which apparently is a very popular day to get married! She described multiple ceremonies, including helicopter rides for 2 of the couples that day! This calls for Champagne! Donna Jewett, Nutritional Educator and Activist
Donna Jewett is determined to leave a legacy and continue to make a difference in others' lives. And she's leading by example. Throughout her life, she has taught people how to care for themselves and for the earth. She and her husband lived "off the grid" in their home on Cape Cod, utilizing solar, geothermal, hydroponics, and organic gardening... to power their home and grow their own vegetables. She lost her husband a couple of years ago and is continuing the mission they shared by building community in their condo association and church in Florida    and teaching people organic gardening techniques, as well as nutritional guidance through her education, experience, and Shaklee business.I met Donna through Sassy Sisters... a women's networking group in SW Florida. At the age of 80, she lights up a room when she enters it. She's always kind, fun, and supportive... She's bright and bubbly! And, best of all, she has no regrets and is living her best life!  You'll enjoy hearing about her family Happy Hour Tradition. It's one I'm going to incorporate into our Fitzgerald Family routine. Jill Craven on Making Tough Decisions as a Business Owner, and Planning for the New Year
You heard part of Jill Craven's story in one of my very first episodes. Her business, Starstruck AllStars is a very successful cheer, tumbling, and dance gym in central Iowa. She's been a friend since college.Jill and Janet and I had our holiday lunch last week (Jennifer couldn't make it because her family went to the Liberty Bowl...and DANGIT! Cyclones! ugh... but I digress...). Anyhoooo... Jill and Janet and I had a wonderful conversation and Jill & I decided to continue it on my show. We had our chat on New Year's Day... about half-way through the Citrus Bowl (Oy! Hawks!!) Here we go again.... Our topic was about keeping positive and ... really.... about not being judged for making business decisions and sticking to them.  As female entrepreneurs who grew up... in a different time.. it can be .. well.. challenging. But I think... personally... it comes down to setting expectations, communication, and consistency. I'm hopeful for our future and see the opportunities and promise the new year brings. We have some ideas to share and I hope you'll share your thoughts... what do you plan to do this year?, and do you have any ideas for not letting emotions zap your energy and keeping your joy? Do you have a motto or word for the year? Jill's (and Starstruck's) Motto for the year is "Win the Day"!I'm still working on mine, but you know it's going to incorporate fun (and probably a toast). Maybe it should be "Wine the day!"?The song Jill referenced in this episode: Girl in the Mirror, by Megan MoroneyFollow Starstruck All Stars on Facebook. And on Instagram @starstruckallstarsWine Camp! Carol Meade on Supporting Mental Health
As Director of Behavioral Health Services at St. Luke's, Carol Meade is passionate about mental health services. She's served the community for over 30 years, and worked at St. Luke's Hospital for the majority of her career. Her passion for mental health care comes is evident in her work and in the accolades she receives. She was recently honored by Waypoint Services' Women of Achievement in Service to the Community. Three words that describe her are Resilient, Empathic, and Determined. She's also one of my best friends and golfing buddy. We've solved many problems on the golf course and usually over "swing oil." At the end of our conversation, she "flips the script" and asks ME a question about what's next for me. I'm blessed to have friends who support and encourage me in my current transition. One of the things we discussed on the golf course is a retreat she runs called Reigniting the Spirit of Caring... she just lights up when she describes it. I wish every company had this program, and someone like Carol to implement it.Carol is hiring Psych Nurses!
