Dr. Batchelor is currently the leader of a network of charter schools in the southeast.    During the podcast, Dr. Batchelor shares his experience that led him to have a passion for education and a strong belief in the need for every student to have a quality educational experience. Dr. Batchelor has several responsibilities in education from driving buses to driving change. His experiences, knowledge, and maturity make him an impeccable leader for and of educational reform and he is only beginning. He shares the importance of engaging all stakeholders in supporting and prioritizing education as well as the aspects needed to be a progressive and effective educational leader. This success includes increasing teacher capacity, having an intentional focus on student achievement, and establishing collaborative relationships with the communities being served. Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Rev. Dr. Ingrid Hayes-Burrell. Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell speaks to us on the topics of pursuing your passion and taking risks. Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell is a Project Manager in the Project Management Office, Member Supervision Department, of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) located in Washington, D.C. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Global Health Services Department at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) in Adelphi, Maryland, Adjunct Professor in Health Services Department at University of the Potomac in Washington, DC, as well as a Lecturer in the School of Business in the Department of Management at Howard University. Additionally, she is the President of Eagle Cardinal, LLC, a consulting services and product development corporation, a dissertation editor, and the author of three books.   During the podcast, Rev. Dr. Burrell shares what motivated her to pursue her doctorate degree, the influence of her parents, her love for helping others, and how she balances work, family life, her pastoral work, and many other activities. She also discusses her work as a Project Manager and how she navigates working with diverse groups and individuals as the lead person responsible for ensuring the successful completion and implementation of multiple projects with various companies and organizations.   Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell is a native Baltimorean. She is a graduate of the International Business College, where she majored in Executive Secretarial Science. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Potomac College, a Master of Business Administration in Organizational Management from Trinity University, and a Doctor of Business Administration with a specialization in Management from the College of Management and Technology at Walden University. In 1999, she received an Honorary Bachelor of Theology degree from the American International Theological Institute and Seminary. She became a licensed minister in 2014 and was ordained as a Reverend of the Gospel in June 2019. Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell is a member of Union Temple Baptist Church, Washington, DC where she serves the body of Christ as an Associate Minister and Teacher for the Omni Ministry for Children. More importantly, she is a proud wife, mother, and grandmother of four.

Dr. Johnson has extensive experience working with corporate companies such as IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin in various positions including Senior Program Management. She began her teaching career as an Adjunct Professor at Howard University. Dr. Johnson has served as an Associate Professor, Department Chair of Psychology, and Assistant Dean in the School of Liberal Arts at Hampton University. Dr. Johnson most recently joined the Department of Psychology at Florida A & M University in 2019.   During the podcast, Dr. Johnson discusses her journey to the doctorate, which included working while being committed to completing her studies. Dr. Johnson had long expressed a passion for psychology and made a conscious decision to take her expertise to HBCUs and its students. Understanding that many students she serves are first generation college students, Dr. Johnson prioritizes the importance of a quality education and how higher education can change the trajectory of success for HBCU students. Dr. Johnson also shares how educational psychology is important to engage students and deepen teacher capacity. Awareness and professional development in educational psychology is important to increase student motivation and learning outcomes, especially due to the increased use of technology due to the nation’s COVID pandemic. With opportunities to continue to conduct research, Dr. Johnson is overjoyed by being able to grant undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in research and strengthen their experiences and practical knowledge.   Dr. Johnson earned a M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Howard University, with a sub-specialty in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. She earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Strayer University. She also earned a BS in Modern Foreign Languages from Jackson State University. Dr. Johnson has mentored junior faculty and mentored many students academically and in research. Dr. Johnson is actively engaged in research and grant writing. She has authored various peer review journal articles, a book, and a book chapter. Dr. Johnson’s research interests include: classroom dynamics and the classroom learning environment (primarily from the student’s voice); factors which influence the classroom learning environment and classroom dynamics such as culture and learning; online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning, student learning preferences, and innovative teaching strategies.

Dr. Ukanwa is currently in her second career. Previously she was an industrial engineer, financial analyst, and finance executive at Walt Disney, Citigroup, Viacom, and Kaplan. Currently, Dr. Ukanwa is Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Southern California, a quantitative modeler, and an expert in artificial intelligence.   During the podcast, Dr. Ukanwa shares his insights on the latest equity fight that those in Black and Brown communities must battle: technology. Technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) is used to make decisions about consumers, however Dr. Ukanwa shares her legitimate concerns about the errors that occur related to AI inability to accurately identify and inform decisions for all consumers. Dr. Ukanwa shares her love for teaching and leading, but also enjoys one of the biggest advantages of being a professor, which is the ability to engage in passion work via research. She discusses how she uses research to collect data and challenge how AI can be misleading and problematic. While valuing the use and benefits of technology, Dr. Ukanwa boldly stands for equity and fairness and advocates that her colleagues from other races and cultures consider everyone in their research developments and methodology to also address those from all races, cultures, and genders.   Dr. Ukanwa was the winner of the 2018 Eli Jones Promising Young Scholar Award, a finalist for the 2018 INFORMS Service Science Best Student Paper Award. 2019 Howard/AMA Doctoral Dissertation Award, and the 2020 AMS Mary Kay Doctoral Dissertation Award. She is a wife and mother, but most importantly an intelligent and powerful woman with so much to offer the academia. Dr. Ukanwa earned a Ph.D. in Marketing (Quantitative) from University of Maryland; M.B.A., B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.

Being the offspring of parents who ministered through service, Dr. Wilder shares how faith, leadership and higher education are often beneficially mutualistic. With growing congregations of scholars among certain denominations, leaders too must be diverse in their approach to both preach and teach.  As an ordained minister, Dr. Wilder also shares his gifts as a professor where he has taught courses in Ethics, Professional Development, Political Science, Philosophy, Leadership and Spirituality, World Religions, and African American Studies as an adjunct faculty member for several colleges and universities. Dr. Wilder shares the biggest misconception and true essence of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Wilder received his B.A. from the University of South Carolina in Political Science with a minor in Spanish, his M.Div. from the Interdenominational Theological Center, and his Ph.D. from Union Institute & University in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Ethical and Creative Leadership and a specialization in Martin Luther King, Jr. Studies. He is currently a faculty member at Newberry College. Dr. Wilder prioritizes time with his wife, Kelli, and their two sons, Douglass and Asher. Running a family owned business that cares for adults with disabilities continues her mother’s work and has allowed her to be a willing vessel to spread love.  In addition, Dr. Karriem’s work with emotional intelligence has shown how EI contributes to significant life outcomes, such as better decision making and improved learning skills. She discusses the relevance and implication of EI in the workplace among leaders considering the shift in how and where the American workforce perform their roles due to the global pandemic. Dr. Karriem obtained her Doctorate Degree from University of Phoenix and completed her dissertation on Stress and Emotional Intelligence (EI). After becoming an aunt of two beautiful twin girls she decided to create inspiring books that teach both young and old about Emotional Intelligence, diversity, values: and those with special needs. Dr. Karriem was born and continues to live in the Chicago area.

Dr. Baul-Pinson speaks to us on the topics of mental health and mental illness, her connection with mental illness, and the lack of diversity among mental health professionals. Dr. Baul-Pinson is currently an adjunct professor at various universities. She is in private practice as a licensed independent mental health practitioner and clinical supervisor. During the podcast, Dr. Baul-Pinson shares how as a child she did not see Black professional in the mental health arena, while being exposed to family members who displayed behavior that she now understands to be mental illness. Historically in the Black community, the diagnoses of mental health and illness have not been prevalent or popular. Dr. Baul-Pinson discusses the importance of everyone, specifically Black America, seeking appropriate mental health support when needed whether it be temporary or more long term service based on the determination of a professional. She also shares the difference in her role as a clinical supervisor which supports those who desire to be a mental professional not only on the skill but also the business aspects of the work. While most of her work has involved families where parental mental health disorders proved challenging to these parents, the heaviness proved to be taxing leading her to work with military veterans in a less demanding role. Dr. Baul-Pinson possesses a doctorate degree in Human Services with an emphasis in Counseling from Capella University. She received her master’s degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma, and her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  Dr. Baul-Pinson collaborates with probation services to provide counseling, education, and groups and also works on community projects such as support groups and mediation for restorative justice.

She discusses her work as a scientific communicator, with a passion for Immunology, and its importance to the scientific community. As a strong advocate, she also stresses the importance of her presence in the medical field to ensure that the voice of her community is represented and heard while understanding that having a seat at the table offers her the ability to provide information and access to needed and often muted individuals. Dr. Martin offers both passion and professionalism to the field and has amazing desires for the future.   Dr. Ayana Martin earned her PhD in Molecular Medicine and Translational Science from Wake Forest University and a B.S. in Biology from Benedict College. Dr. Morris is a loving individual personally and professionally. He co-hosts a podcast entitled the Living Corporate and The Access Point that you should definitely check out. Dr. Morris co-edited two books, When Leadership Fails (Emerald, 2021) and the Handbook of Research on Instructional Systems and Educational Technology (IGI Global, 2017). She is a blog contributor for Pure Romance and has been featured in Cosmopolitan, Psychology Today, Madame Noire, MindBodyGreen, Woman’s Day, a variety of podcasts, and MTV News.  During the podcast, Dr. Townes shares her insights on sexuality by differentiating between a sexuality educator and a sexuality counselor. Dr. Townes discussed why she has an intentional focus on the Black woman, specifically the sexual profile and stereotypes of Black women. The interview included rich dialogue surrounding sexual identity and self esteem and why this is such an important topic to all people despite sex, sexuality, gender, or race so that we can normalize the conversation regarding sex. She also shares very personal stories of resilience, commitment, and purpose as well as her journey to the doctorate. Dr. Townes is a young, gifted, and bold women who understands her purpose to create better access and information to black and brown communities. Dr. Townes earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Master of Public Health in Community Education degrees from the University of Cincinnati. In his past work, he studied how chemoreception mediates the gregarious settlement of barnacles. His later work has focused on studies of Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis as habitats for ribbed mussels in the Hackensack Meadowlands. His current work focuses on the circadian rhythm of hermit crabs, roaches, and copepods.   Dr. McClary received his B.S. in Marine Science from Richard Stockton State College of New Jersey, now Stockton University, in 1990 and received his Ph.D. in Zoology from Duke University in 1997. Dr. McClary serves on the Urban Coast Institute Advisory Committee, the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation Environmental Advisory Board, the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions Board of Trustees, and the Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board. Dr. Griffin is a professional educator with over 17 years of experience and nine years, specifically, in adult education. She speaks to us on her work with adults as an Associate Dean and an Associate Professor in the College of Education at Piedmont University. Dr. Griffin has always been an advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion which led her to join the DEI Council and volunteer to serve as the faculty co-chair.   During the podcast, Dr. Griffin shares her time serving in K-12, Title I schools as an Instructional Coach and Teacher Leader where she supported and trained teachers to implement research-based instructional strategies for improved instruction and student learning. Dr. Griffin has always focused on Multiculturalism and Social/Cultural instruction. She also discusses her focus to support the university in creating more diverse hiring practices which allows students to see themselves in faculty members as well as a sense of safety and optimism of what is possible due to the amount of diverse representation present. Dr. Griffin has always advocated and served in communities that are often underserved, undervalued, and underappreciated.   Dr. Griffin earned a B.S. in Psychology from Georgia State University, a Master’s in Education from DePaul University, an Education Specialist and Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Piedmont University (formally Piedmont College). She is certified with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, a Georgia Master Teacher, and has a Tier I Leadership Certification. Dr. Griffin also has a certification in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.

Dr. Zelpha Taylor is an educator with almost thirty years of classroom experience where she has mostly served students of color from schools on the island of Jamaica to the inner city of America. Dr. Taylor speaks on the power and passion of an educator to create change when they accept the call to, not only teach but, ensure all students are seen, heard, and valued.   During the podcast, Dr. Taylor shares her journey to becoming an educator as a small girl who had no idea of her superpowers but thought her purpose in life was to simply duplicate another’s journey. This was far from the truth. Upon getting a taste of the classroom, Dr. Taylor was transformed and realized her purpose to teach. Dr. Taylor’s approach to education is inclusive of a passion, love, and dignity for her students that encourages them to perform at high levels. She is the “in-house” cheerleader for student success and had an infinity to work with black and brown students. Without having a desire to transition into leadership, Dr. Taylor shares why she prefers to remain in the classroom. Dr. Taylor has plans for the future that will allow her to share her message with other teachers and express the notion teachers can love on students while ensuring the provision of learning opportunities.   Dr. Taylor earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Social Sciences from the University of the West Indies – Mona, a Master of Secondary Education from Towson University, Baltimore, Maryland, a Reading Specialist Certification from Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland, and a Doctor of Education - Teaching and Learning from Argosy University, Northern Virginia.

Dr. Wright speaks to us on the topics of social interactions and opportunities to provide new ways of learning for students across the world. Dr. Wright is an educator/sociologist, specializing in African American studies, social stratification (race, class, and gender), urban education, media, and popular culture. She has taught for 20 plus years at all levels of the California public school system: K-12, community colleges, California State University and the University of California.    During the podcast, Dr. Wright shares her insights on sociology and how she infuses her passion for pop culture, specifically hip hop culture. While Dr. Wright is a sought after commentator who has been invited to speak at numerous events to discuss hip hop, race, class, gender, media, youth political mobilization, and social justice more broadly, she also works to empower urban communities through hip hop pedagogy, culturally relevant curriculum, media literacy, and community activism/artivism. As a child who grew up immersed in hip hop culture, she understands how the artform has been a tool of activism, history, expression, and storytelling. This art has now crossed racial, gender, and generational lines. Dr. Wright knows the strong influence hip hop culture has had across the globe and discusses the potential it can have in helping to develop new understandings of others’ lived experiences.   Dr. Wright received her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Communication and Media Studies and Afro American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles and her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine.Wright is a board member for Hip Hop Congress, and joint owner of JOLO Investments, LLC. She also currently serves as the Social Policy chair of the Association of Black Sociologists and Administrator of Urban Teachers Network (UTN), a 501(c)3 charity. She is also a loving wife and mother.

Dr. DuBose is a Morehouse man who is a scientist, educator, analyst, and certified project management professional with over 10 years of experience in the nuclear industry. He is the founder of BDM, a consulting firm that provides strategic consulting services in federal program oversight, project management, research and development, data management, and training for government and commercial organizations..    During the podcast, Dr. DuBose shares the journey of his work and how his formative years have allowed him to value his current work and those that have supported him along his path. The interview explores believing in one’s abilities and being committed to your talents, desires, and gifts. Acknowledging your own contributions and being confident that you have something to offer is the larger picture that led Dr. DuBose to step out as an employee and professor to ultimately create  his own business.   Dr. DuBose earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Morehouse College; M.S. in Atmospheric Physics and Dynamics from Clark Atlanta University; and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from North Carolina State University. His international experience includes technical advice to Global Threat Reduction Initiative programs in Sweden, Italy, and Belgium. Domestically, he has been a frequent contributor in efforts to develop new nuclear detection methods, introduce higher standards into existing methods, and improve performance assurance for DOE safeguards programs. Dr. DuBose has published papers on nuclear detection, integrated performance testing, and safeguards defense-in-depth. He has also made numerous technical presentations and continues to provide input to various sites within the DOE complex on safeguards program improvement.

This week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast features our guest, Dr. Matthew Wilmot who speaks to us on the topics of psychology, diversity, community education. Dr. Wilmot is an Afro-Jamaican, LGBTQ, Canadian psychologist that lives in Ohio. His intersectionality and curiosity for knowledge led him from the big city of Toronto, to rural Waterloo, now to suburban Ohio. He is currently a community health educator and research analyst at AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor.    During the podcast, Dr. Wilmot discusses his journey to the doctorate and what eventually led him to Ohio. He also shares how important it is to inform minority communities on current information regarding HIV and STI. With his commitment to advocacy, Dr. Wilmot is such a talented and gifted individual. In addition to his work as an educator, he also combines his skills and experiences which led him to create the paradigm, Tabula Rasta, an idealized image of making adjustments to life by finding the essential (or “ital”) balance. Tabula is the Latin word for slate and Rasta simply means to invest in your growth through ital foods, mental stimulation, and social settings, even when life transitions seem unbalanced and chaotic. Living according to this paradigm, Dr. Wilmot teaches others that there is a way to thrive in uncertainty.   Dr. Wilmot received a B.Sc in Psychology from University of Toronto Scarborough; M.A. in Social Psychology from University of Waterloo; and a Ph.D. in Psychology from University of Waterloo.
