Help, I've hit burnout!!!

Confusion to Clarity

Feb 19 2024 • 12 mins

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fantastic week and enjoyed their half term break. It's amazing how quickly time flies, isn't it? This week, I took a slight break from my usual routine, which was refreshing until I came down with a cold on Friday. It seems like whenever we pause, our bodies decide it's the perfect time to remind us to slow down. This got me thinking about the importance of recognising burnout before it becomes overwhelming.

Recognising Burnout:

  • Burnout isn't just feeling tired or stressed; it's a real challenge that many of us face. It's crucial to recognize the signs early on. Symptoms may include exhaustion, sleep disturbances, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, or having a short temper.
  • As someone who supports clients through similar struggles, I understand the difficulty of balancing responsibilities while avoiding burnout. It's essential to acknowledge your feelings and understand that you're not alone in this journey.

Practicing Self-Compassion:

  • One crucial step in addressing burnout is practicing self-compassion. It's okay to struggle, and it's okay to ask for help. Sometimes, imagining how you would support a friend in your situation can help you offer yourself the same kindness.
  • It's important to speak up and share how you're feeling. Whether it's talking to someone, voice noting your thoughts, or journaling, finding a way to express yourself can alleviate the pressure.

Setting Boundaries and Saying No:

  • Learning to set boundaries and say no when needed is essential for preventing burnout. While it may feel uncomfortable at first, prioritizing your needs is crucial for your well-being.
  • Many of us struggle with people-pleasing tendencies, but it's essential to remember that saying no doesn't make you a bad person. Prioritise yourself without guilt.

Prioritising Self-Care:

  • Taking care of yourself is not optional; it's necessary for preventing burnout. Prioritise sleep, nutrition, and exercise, even when you feel too busy to do so.
  • Engage in activities that bring you joy and allow you to disconnect from stress. Whether it's taking a walk in nature, performing random acts of kindness, expressing gratitude, or indulging in a hobby, find what works for you.

Burnout is a significant challenge, but it's not insurmountable. By recognising the signs, practicing self-compassion, setting boundaries, and prioritising self-care, you can prevent burnout and live a more balanced life.
