Papolento

On the first Papolento in English, I talked with Marc Liam, my English teacher at the University of Hamburg. The conversation had three main topics: education, language learning and Hip-Hop. Education: its role to form crictical thinkers, learning to pass an exam, discipline, control and conformity to dominant institutions and ideologies, education as a means to a job or as an end in itself, the effect of Universities admission policies on education, Paulo Freire's view on education as a means to transform the world, passive students not taking full advantage of internet possibilities, teachers no longer exclusively possessing knowledge. Language learning: Michel Thomas method and songs to learn languages, the balance between standards and positive feedback, kids having no fear of making mistakes, solidarity and its value to learning, kids' natural curiosity to learn killed by our education system. Hip-Hop: distinctions between Hip-Hop and Gansta Rap, the latter being more suited to the market, Conscious Hip-Hop, paralels between freeestyle and Shamanism, raping as a means to language acquisition, no place for covers in Hip-Hop's culture.
