Paul, Timothy, and Women in the Church

Today we step away from the Lord’s Prayer to discuss a topic raised in Monica’s missional community. Essentially, what do we do with 1st Timothy, chapter 2?

There are plenty of Bible passages that make us squirm in our modern sensibilities, and when Paul writes to Timothy about the rules for women in worship we can be tempted to write it off as irrelevant for our time. But while we investigate the cultural and historical background of this early church letter, we see that it still has something to say to us. We just need to listen. If we take the time to do that, God will show us a better way: a way that is paved with freedom, humility, compassion and love.

ALSO:

  • God works within His own order
  • God looks at the heart
  • Our genders work in conjunction with the gifts we have been given
  • We don’t want to be told what to do
  • “I heard that, God.”

Light: God sees and cares for the vulnerable. He is always working for our good. And we don’t have to present ourselves in any specific way to earn His favor.

Action: Look for the good in a person of the opposite sex with whom you have a relationship.
