Hi, I’m Nathan Ching, a redeemed child of God, happy husband and homeschooling dad, and lifelong lover of good books. For years--even before I became a father--I eagerly looked forward to leading my children to know, love, and serve God. As a young man, I realized that reading, beginning first with the Bible, then other books, unlocked my understanding. The Old Testament prophet said, ”I Daniel understood by books….” When I prayed about how to train my children for God, I became convinced that reading to and with my children would be an essential element in helping them to delight in God and do His will. While I can’t claim to have perfected the art of leading my family, I am happy to say that the Lord has taught me practical, useful lessons--lessons I believe would serve other dads as they lead their families. That’s what this podcast is all about. There are treasures to be found in books that simply can’t be found anywhere else. Come join us on our journey, and let’s go find the treasures in books! πŸ“– Download free Bible audio: www.refreshpublishing.com/bible πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸ’» Visit the Website: www.treasureboxbooks.com πŸ“© Email Me: support@treasureboxbooks.com +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ https://feed.podbean.com/treasureboxbooks/feed.xml Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. read less

040 | Lead Your Family through Loss
Hi Fellow Dads, At some point, we will all endure the loss of a loved one. How will our families make it through and maintain confidence in God and faith in His word? Here are some truths God has been teaching me to teach my family as we have been mourning the loss of a precious loved one. Leaning on Jesus, Nathan Scriptures James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what [shall be] on the morrow. For what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. Ecclesiastes 11:8 But if a man live many years, [and] rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh [is] vanity. Verses about men weeping: Acts 20:31, Mark 14:72, John 11:35 Well-known passages on the resurrection of believers: John 14; 1 Corinthians 15; and 1 Thessalonians 4 1 Corinthians 15:19-20 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept. John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 2 Corinthians 7:6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD [is] a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Verses quoted in Daily Light in May 25, Morning reading: Psalm 31: 19; Isaiah 64:4; 1 Corinthians 2:9, 10; Psalm 16:11; Psalm 36:7-9; 1 Timothy 4:8. 039-of-men-and-their-mothers
Hey Fellow Dads, How should wise, godly men relate to their mothers, mothers-in-law, and grandmothers? How do we lead our childrenβ€”especially our sonsβ€”to do so? In this episode we'll think about four scriptural guidelines, along with a handful of helpful books, to help us relate to these important women as God intends us to. β€”Nathan Quotes β€œWhen all is said and done, it is the mother, and the mother only, who is a better citizen than the soldier who fights for his country. … The mother who does her part in rearing and training aright the boys and girls who are to be the men and women of the next generation, is of greater use to the community, and occupies, if she only would realize it, a more honorable as well as more important position than any man in it. She is more important, by far, than the successful statesman, or businessman, or artist, or scientist.” β€”Theodore Roosevelt β€œHomemaking is surely in reality the most important work in the world. What do ships, railways, mines, cars, government, etc. exist for except that people may be fed, warmed, and safe in their own homes?...The homemaker’s job is one for which all others exist.” β€”C.S. Lewis β€œAll I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” ―George Washington β€œAll that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” β€”Abraham Lincoln β€œNo man is poor who has a Godly mother.” β€”Abraham Lincoln β€œIn spite of all this, I still held fast to the notion that a race which could produce as good and gentle and loving a woman as my mother must have some good in it that the geographers had failed to discover.” β€”Booker T. Washington, quoted by Stephen Mansfield in Then Darkness Fled β€œMenβ€”grown menβ€”are commanded to honour their fathers and their mothers.” β€”NC β€œFinally, allow me to recommend one more way that we as men can honor our mothers, bring them happiness, and help them, as well as lead our children to do the sameβ€”it’s something you can begin doing today, if you don’t already, and it won’t cost you a penny. β€œPray for your mothers. Pray for your mom. Pray for your grandmothers. And, of course, pray for your wife. β€œPray that God to show them His mercy and grace and truth; and enable them to trust and love the Lord Jesus Christ; and help them to be led by His Holy Spirit; and pour His bountiful blessings upon themβ€”spirit, soul, and body.   β€œAnd allow your children to hear you pray for them too.” β€”NC Key Points Scriptural guidelines for relating to our mothers: God expects us to hold our mothers in high esteemβ€”to honor them. God teaches us to heed their wisdom. God is pleased when we make our mothers happy (through our living in wisdom and truth). We should do whatever we can to help our mothers. 038 | Why Bother with History
Hey Fellow Dads! Why should we bother with history? Isn’t it just facts about dates and dead people? Or is there some actual, as well as practical, value to learning the stories of the past? In this episode, I share five reasons we as dads should know history ourselves, and then pass it on to our children! β€”Nathan Why bother reading history? Because History is HIS story, reading history gives us a glimpse into how God is bringing His will to fruition amongst mankind.Because knowing history gives us a clearer understanding into our own times.Because history is full of negative examplesβ€”people doing things they should not have.Because history is full of positive examplesβ€”people doing great and good things for their own generation.Because reading history reminds us that our own lives are very brief; but with God's help, we can accomplish much to bless our own generation and succeeding generations and lay up treasures in heaven!Scriptures Psalm 78:1-8 1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: 3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: 6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: 7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: 8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God. Isaiah 46:9-10 9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Revelation 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. Ecclesiastes 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 1 Corinthians 10:6, 11 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. Quotes "The fate of unborn millions now depends, under God, on the courage and conduct of this Army." β€”Gen. George Washington β€œAmerica was founded by people who believe that God was their rock of safety. I recognize we must be cautious in claiming that God is on our side, but I think it’s all right to keep asking if we’re on His side.” β€”President Ronald Reagan, in his Second Inaugural Address, January 25, 1984, quoted in America’s God and Country: Encyclopedia of Quotations, by William J. Federer β€œHe is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” β€”martyred missionary Jim Elliot Books πŸ“–  More Than Dates and Dead People, by Stephen Mansfield πŸ“–  Breaking Into Print: Before and After the Invention of the Printing Press, written by Stephen Krensky, illustrated by Bonnie Christensen πŸ“–  Under Drake’s Flag: A Tale of the Spanish Main, by G.A. 037 | Lead Your Family Even When You're Not Home
Intro Hey Dads, Nothing can replace your voice speaking truth and stability into your children’s hearts, and no one can replace you being present in their lives. But is there a way they can continue to hear your voice when you have to be away for a time? In this episode I discuss one way we can reach out to our childrenβ€”even from afarβ€”to influence them with truth, bind our hearts together with theirs, and simply show them we’re thinking about them and love them. This small project can be fun for you, meaningful for your family, and easy enough to start today! --Nathan What would I talk about? Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.Deuteronomy 5Psalm 78:1-8Read Bible verses. Hey Dads, Do you sometimes find yourself or your family becoming self-absorbed, forgetting the suffering of imprisoned and persecuted Christians around the world? Or do you even know how to find out about those who are suffering? Today’s episode lists books and resources to keep your family informed and gives ways to take your stand for Christ and help them. Let’s follow God’s command to β€œremember them that are in bonds”—our brothers and sisters in Christ! --Nathan Scriptures Hebrews 13:3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. 2 Corinthians 6:9-10 9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; 10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. 034 | This Is My Father's World - Part 1
Hey Dads, We believe that God created the natural world . . . but how often do we get out in it? And are we leading our children to learn about nature as a way of growing their faith in the Creator? Tune in today to learn why and how nature stories can be an important part of your family culture and education. --Nathan Why should we as Christian dads read nature stories to and with our families? Because the natural world (the creation) gives us real glimpses of God’s wisdom and power.Because the natural world illustrates spiritual truths.Because learning about nature reminds us of the fact that God created us, using great wisdom and lovingkindness.Because hearing a nature story can teach us humility.Because nature stories can show our children (and us) that God’s revealed word does not clash with reality but rather corresponds with reality.Books πŸ“– Indescribable, by Louis Giglio πŸ“– My Listening Ears, by Joanne DeJonge πŸ“– Did Adam Have a Bellybutton? 031 | Read the Old Testament
Hey Fellow Dads, Have you ever wondered if the Old Testament is really relevant for today? Is it worth studying with and reading to our families, or should we β€œunhitch” ourselves from the O.T. and focus only on the New? Today we ask ten questions about the Old Testamentβ€”and find the answers mostly in the New Testament. Aloha, Nathan Outline πŸ’‘ For a full outline including Scriptures for each point below, see the show notes at https://refreshpublishing.com/031-read-the-old-testament 1. What does the New Testament say about why the Old Testament was written? 2. To the person without knowledge of the O.T., does the N.T. really make sense? 3. According to both O.T. and N.T., what does God use His Law (part of the O.T.) to accomplish? 4. How did Jesus view the O.T.? 5. What does the N.T. instruct Christians to do with the O.T.? 6. How did the apostles view the O.T.? 7. How does God view His word? 8. In what ways is the O.T. useful for Christians? 9. What did Jesus himself say about the words of the O.T.? 10. How important did Jesus say the words of the O.T. are to our lives? So Should We "Unhitch" from the First 39 Books of the Bible? Ideas for Reading the Old Testament Read through the Bible with your family, including O.T. passages. (practical suggestions for this in Ep. 24: Lead Your Family to and in the Bible). Use Bible story books to teach your children the stories of the O.T. (check out Episode 19: Use Tools to Teach Your Children the Bible). Sing Psalms. Three practical tools listed below: πŸ“– We enjoy using Psalms for Worship, published by Crown and Covenant Publications. (A friend said the Book of Psalms for Singing, same publisher, is better. I’m not familiar with it, so cannot knowledgeably comment.) πŸ“– Psalm 119 in Song, by Susie Kimbrough, available on CD, MP3 download, and songbook at ShepardMusic.com. We love singing these very singable tunes. πŸ“– A church in NE Florida introduced us to the hymnal called Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs, a hymnal uniquely and intentionally containing all three types of music listed in Ephesians and Colossiansβ€”with nearly one thousand selections! When you read O.T. passages, look for the ways the text points to the Lord Jesus Christ, and show that to your family. Read a chapter of Proverbs to correspond with the date. For example, on Feb. 20, 2024, we would read Proverbs 20. When you read the Bibleβ€”either from O.T. or N.T.β€”make this your prayer: "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law." (Psalm 119:18) If you enjoyed this episode, πŸŽ™οΈPlease subscribe to the podcast so you can listen again next week! ✍🏻 Leaving a review is the best way to say "thanks" so that others can find the podcast, too! 030 | Secure Your Own Mask First
Hey Dads, As Christian dads, we long for our children to follow God’s path with joy-filled hearts. We pray they will delight in God Himself. But is there something we need to make sure we ourselves are doing first? In Ep. 30, my longtime friend Jonathan Ballou talks with me about how we as dads need to β€œsecure our own mask first” to guide our families in the right way. With Much Aloha, Nathan Scripture Hebrews 7:27 Quotes "The journey of missions has always had a strong connection to adventure. It's always, for me, had a sense of freshness and newness and a pioneering spirit to it…"β€”Jonathan Ballou "Honestly, we learn from each other in that, we support each other in that, because our strengths are different, we lean on each other."β€”J.B. "I know that my own heart has to be steady through my walk with God. I think that I try to deal with my own…spiritual, emotional turbulence without letting that shake the people around me."β€”J.B. "One of the responsibilities that God gave men with our role is to be steady. And the faith and the devotional life of a father has to provide stability that will weather seasons. Any family is going to go through a lot of different seasons, and I've seen in so many cases where it's the strength and the stability of a father's walk with God that allows the family to navigate and to weather those different times."β€”J.B. "We live in an age where there's a great deal of the abdication of the role that God has given to us."β€”J.B. "We do have the responsibility to other people, but the way that we're best suited to care for our families is when our own spiritual lives, our own spiritual walk is regular and steady and faithful, and then we're able to, by example, lead others into a similar closeness and intimacy with Christ."β€”J.B. "Fathers, you can get this right."β€”J.B., referring to what Jon Tyson teaches fathers regarding raising their sons "As readers, we can't become complacent….We want our minds to be sharp. There can be a certain dullness of the mind, either from not reading, or from only reading that which we already know or that which we already agree with, and we're never allowing ourselves to be challenged to actually do the work of sifting out and refuting what somebody else is putting out there in their position. I think we expose ourselves to a certain amount of mental atrophy, that we would then become unfit to help the people that we're supposed to help." β€”J.B. 029 | Care for Multiple Generations in Your Family
Hey Dads, Do you have certain books that are so good you want everyone in your family to experience them? If you have multiple children in different age brackets, it’s easy to assume that what you’ve shared with one, they all should know. How do we record and remember our reading so that no one misses out on their part of the feast? Tune in today and find out! Nathan Scriptures Psalm 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.   Psalm 50:14-15 14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: 15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.   Psalm 65:2 O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Books πŸ“–  The Lamb, by John Cross πŸ“–  Missionary Stories with the Millers, by Mildred Martin πŸ“–  If Animals Could Talk: Creation Speaks for Itself, by Dr. Werner Gitt πŸ“–  The Cruelest Miles, by Gay Salisbury & Laney Salisbury πŸ“–  The Driving Book: Everything New Drivers Need to Know But Don’t Know to Ask, by Karen Gravelle πŸ“–  The Holy Bible Practical Ideas Keep a reading list.Include each member of your family your reading list, and record the books read with or to each one.In your family’s own books, record the date and place you finished reading the book, and with whom (whole family or individual family member).Encourage each child to personally read through the Bible himself or herself, and reward him or her upon completion of this great accomplishment. Quote β€œIf we dads have any powers of observation at all, we know from seeing what our wives do in and for our homes that a mother's work is never done. It might not seem as dramatic as that, but when it comes to reading with and reading to and encouraging our children to read, our work as dads is never done--at least, not until they leave our nest and fly out to build one of their own--then, we hope and pray, they will carry on the grand tradition we have begun under our roof, reading to and with our children.” If you enjoyed this episode, πŸŽ™οΈPlease subscribe to the podcast so you can listen again next week! ✍🏻 Leaving a review is the best way to say "thanks" so that others can find the podcast, too! 026 | Nourish Your Children's Faith
Hey Dads, We hear about so many young people who have grown up in Christian homes but left the faith. We can’t guarantee that our children will follow God, but we can find ways to help encourage a thinking, vibrant faith in God’s word . . . including using books! --Nathan Quotes Just as healthy plants need nourishment, our children need nourishment too. Specifically, their faith in God and His word needs nourishment. How do we, as fathers, provide that nourishment to their souls? In this episode, I list five practical tips to help you nourish your children's souls in trusting God. We're not promoting mindless belief and blind faith; we strongly believe in thinking through questions, we cherish the responsibility of finding out why we should or should not believe certain things; and we want to nourish inquisitiveness in our children's minds. You and I don't have to be experts or feel expert in a particular field to speak confidently about God's word. "Why would you put your faith in something that can't supported by evidence?"-- J.
