30. It's Not Goodbye, but See Ya Later
HAPPY 30th Episode!Well, if you count all of our bonus episodes, it's 38 episodes total. We started this little side project in October of 2021 to share the spirit of Deep Creek and Garrett County, MD and our love for this far western Maryland area that we call "home." We sat on living room couches and interviewed friends. We talked about local events, the four seasons, hunting, kids, farming, slowing down, and we even recorded ourselves indulging in microgreens!Along with all the fun and joy we experienced while making this podcast, there was also a lot of time, work and money required to make it happen. We both have other things we need to focus on - family, jobs, time with friends, other projects, maybe even other podcasts.  So it's time to pause. For now, this is our last episode. We've so very much enjoyed bringing this project to Deep Creek and Garrett County, MD and beyond. THANK YOU for these past 2+ years. Thank you for saying hi to us when we were out and about. Thank you for sending in voice memos. Thank you for interviewing with us and sitting on those couches. Thank you for listening! And an extra special THANK YOU goes out to those who financially supported us through sponsorship: Appalachian Print StudioCashmere Clothing CoDeep Creek Lavender FarmGarrett County Celtic FestivalMeadow Mountain HempNarrows Hill - Ultimate Maps of Deep Creek Lake and Garrett CountyRailey Design Furniture and Home DecorSilver Tree MarineTraders Coffee HouseThe episodes will stay active for a short time, so we hope you'll continue enjoying them. Some of our favorites? The farmer series from spring of 2022, interview with Maryland Governor candidate Laura Neuman, and talking careers, COVID and kids with Terah Crawford all the way back in fall of 2021.For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Instagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasWe launched our podcast using Buzzsprout and the community has been amazing.  If you're curious about starting your own podcast, Buzzsprout is definitely the way to go!

29. Embracing the Transition to Fall!
HAPPY (almost) FALL from the (far western) mountains of Maryland! We're continuing with our four new seasonal episodes for the year and now it's time for another chat about fall...Ironically in this fall episode though, we talk a lot about summer, ha! But what we realized in our preparation and effort to share about fall, reflecting on summer was incredibly appropriate...and needed! We all know that fall is full of colorful leaves (especially here in our mountains), cozy-ing up with friends, going to festivals, making soup, picking pumpkins, and hearing the leaves crunch beneath our boots. But maybe what we don't talk about enough is the TRANSITION from summer to fall...We, along with three friends - Alea and Jason Donahue, owners of Yorkie Acres Farm + Herbal Earth Apothecary in Friendsville, MD and Terah Crawford of The Terah Crawford Band + Taylor-Made Deep Creek Real Estate - share our thoughts on the transition from summer to fall in this episode. Alea and Jason are recalling "the best summer of their lives" and Terah is tired (in a good way!) and ready for structure...and we can absolutely relate to both! While we don't love to think about winter too early here in the #tundraofmaryland, we'll see you again in December for one final episode of the 2023 year. Thanks to our friend Kassy Cosner and Appalachian Print Studio for sponsoring this episode! 28. Kickoff to Summer with the Grantsville Guy
HAPPY SUMMER from the (far western) mountains of Maryland! We're continuing with our four new seasonal episodes for the year and now it's time for summer! For many, summer in Deep Creek + Garrett County, MD presents some of the most perfect weather - not too hot, not too cold. But it's also a hustling, bustling time - many more visitors around, everything is open and the weather makes it pretty easy to get outside and enjoy everything our mountains + lake have to offer. So of course it was easy for us to talk about the outdoor activities we enjoy most during this season, eating ice cream and exploring with friends included. It's a very relaxing conversation that's paired with a giant spring of fun from our friend Duane Stein. We interviewed Duane to learn more about his community involvement in one of our small towns and why he started "The Grantsville Guy."We'll see you again in September with a fall episode. Maureen REALLY loves fall and the cooler weather and Jessica REALLY loves the color. Thanks to our friend Kassy Cosner and Appalachian Print Studio for sponsoring this episode! 27. Tips for Spring! Food Features in Garrett County and Regional Events!
We're back!Okay, we were back last week. BUT now we're back to what we originally planned for 2023: four new episodes, one for each of the four seasons. First up, SPRING!Spring in our mountains can be tough. We continue to experience winter weather and everything's just a little quiet - less visitors around, some things are closed and the weather makes it hard to be outside. But surprisingly, we rattled off ALL KINDS of spring things during this conversation! From "getting out of Garrett County" and escaping to nearby Frostburg and Thomas/Davis, to art and music events in Allegany County, MD and Tucker County, WV and numerous Deep Creek + Garrett County locals nights and restaurant shoutouts, there's a whole slew of tips and info for March, April and May in this episode.Bonus: Maureen tells us all about her newest business venture, Pocket Garden Blooms with flower subscriptions and events coming this summer! Check out her website here: https://pocketgardenblooms.comWe'll see you again in June with a summer episode...unless we decide to break our rule of only doing four new episodes again. :)For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! 26. Poodles & Plants: An Interview with Mike Fratz
When Maureen describes this episode she uses the word JOY. When Jessica describes this episode she uses SURPRISE.It was a joy to record and a joy to edit. It was a surprise that we talked for over an hour (or maybe that was no surprise, ha!) and that we only briefly touched upon the three topics that we thought would be the focus.Mike was born and raised in Garrett County. School and jobs took him to Pittsburgh, Washington DC and most recently New York City. COVID brought him back home and it’s because of friends, family, work, and creative projects that he’s able to easily choose to live and stay here. We were most impressed by Mike’s outlook on life and the message of goodness in humanity that he shared. You can mostly find Mike at Railey Design Furniture & Home Decor near Deep Creek Lake where he works as a Pillow Expert and Designer: https://www.raileydesign.com/For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! 25. Do the Jitterbug! Interview with Kendall Ludwig of Curly Red Design & Jitterbug Movement Studio
Time to introduce you to our friend, Kendall! She’s a mama, she’s got curly red hair, she loves Deep Creek + Garrett County like we do, AND she just started a new business! During our chat with Kendall, we hear why she and husband Mark did a 180 and moved from Baltimore to Garrett County, what it’s been like growing her 15-year old graphic design business in the mountains and why they now own a dance studio! We get into the idea of “crafting a life” around what we’ve got here in Garrett County and of course there’s some talk of juggling…because we’re creative, professional, busy moms. Kendall Ludwig is the president and principal designer of CurlyRed where they believe in good design for everyone. Most recently, she’s become the owner and creator of the Jitterbug Movement Studio. Both are located in Oakland, MD.Find out more about CurlyRed: https://www.curlyred.comFind out more about Jitterbug and sign up for dance classes: https://dothejitterbug.comFor more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! 24. Interview with Heather Hanline from the Dove Center

24. Interview with Heather Hanline from the Dove Center
We haven't had an interview since June, so it's time for another one! It's also time to shine a light on a community resource and its leader, the Dove Center and Heather Hanline.Located in Oakland, MD the Dove Center provides safety, advocacy, and counseling to individuals whose lives have been shattered by domestic violence and/or sexual assault, and strives to expand public awareness of those issues.Heather is the director of the Dove Center and shared a ton of details on what she and her team do, which was far more than what we knew of their services. Domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or neglect, are just some of the issues the Dove Center can help victims work through. The 24/7 help line, shelter space, counseling services, and transitional housing services at the Dove Center require a large team and large amount of supplies, and that means a lot of money. Their biggest fundraiser, The Festival of Trees, is an event that our entire community looks forward to. It's been since 2019 that the festival has fully happened, so there's some added excitement for its return this year. Of course we talk about its magic and how it sets the tone for the holiday season. If you're in or near Garrett County, MD and would like to support the Dove Center, visit their website and click "ways to give." If you or someone you know needs help and support, you can call the Dove Center 24/7 at 301-334-9000.Find monthly needs lists on the Dove Center Facebook page and find more info on Festival of Trees, including purchasing tickets for Breakfast with Santa, on the FOT website. For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! 22. Flower Power: A Tasting Experience with Meadow Mountain Microgreens
WOW! What a treat! That perfectly sums up our experience with Meadow Mountain Microgreens. And for you, our listeners? This will be something very different than we've done for all of our other episodes, but we hope it'll be a treat for you, too. Here's the scene: Maureen's dining room, we had just finished taco salads, various drinks on the table, and Darryl and Haeli (of Meadow Mountain Microgreens) tickled and tantalized our tastebuds with a lineup of their incredibly unique mircorgreen and edible flower product. We ate broccoli, radishes (that didn't look like broccoli and radish) and the grand final was the "toothache flower" - definitely stick around for that one!We laughed, we learned, we found some flavors we didn't like, and we even found an edible flower that will elevate your next Miller Lite. In a nutshell, this was a top-notch cuisine scene that we think Darryl and Haeli should start offering on the regular. Also, how cool is that in our mountains of far western Maryland microgreen and edible flower farmers can be found!? 21. Come Get Married Here: Unique Wedding Experiences at Deep Creek
The wedding scene at Deep Creek is hoppin', friends! And we should know! Jessica is a local wedding photographer and it's because of their bride-photographer relationship that Maureen and Jessica met in 2016.Couples are coming here for their destination weddings because they don't need to get on a plane to do it and because we have everything they need to make a wedding happen. Not to mention the beautiful, natural backdrops we have ready and waiting for ceremonies, celebrations and adventures. In this episode, we chat all about our local wedding scene - some history, the elopement trend and a long list of reasons why couples should marry here. We also talk about the impact the weddings have in our county's economy. Jessica gets a chance to nerd out and Maureen gets a chance to recap her own Deep Creek wedding planning experience. And if you're planning a wedding, we hope you'll #comegetmarriedhere. A special thanks to one of Jessica's past brides Caitlin for sending in a voice memo and sharing about her Deep Creek wedding. 18: Caring for Animals, the Earth, and Ourselves: Regenerative Agriculture with Julie Friend from Wildom Farm
It's time for the final installment of our interview series with the founding female farmers of the Deep Creek Farmers Market! Our very own Maureen Sheaffer is one of five founding members of the Deep Creek Farmers Market that just started on May 27th, so we've put together a series of interviews to celebrate this new community project! All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. We've talked with three of the farming ladies so far (we will eventually interview Maureen too!) and rounding out the series is Julie Friend of Wildom Farm in McHenry, MD...Julie's farming journey started in Chicago...in fashion, actually. From the sustainability scene to exploring her own nutritional wellness and then discovering that the two are linked when it comes to how our food is processed, Julie set out to make some big changes, both for herself and for others...and really, for the animals, too.At the start of the COVID pandemic, she moved to her parents' property here in Garrett County and officially started Wildom Farm, a regenerative farm that prioritizes animal welfare, ecology, and human health. She currently has 700 animals on the farm and will finish out 2022 having had an astounding 1800 animals! In a nutshell, Julie and her farming operations are impressive! You can find out more about Julie, Wildom Farm and the products they have available on their website: www.wildomfarm.com. All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. Continuing through mid-June, we're talking with the four farmers (we will eventually interview Maureen too!) and next up is Haeli Gustafson of Meadow Mountain Hemp in Accident, MD...Haeli's story starts in California where she was born, raised, and studied marine biology. She then landed in Tanzania doing work for the Peace Corps and met a nice, charming man from Garrett County, MD while there. (Enter Darryl!) Together, they moved to Washington DC, Haeli doing international development and program management for a USA supply chain in Nigeria and Darryl working as an urban farmer growing hydroponics. In 2019, after moving to our mountains of Maryland, Haeli and Darryl started farming hemp and Meadow Mountain Hemp was born. During this interview, we talk about the misconceptions and benefits of hemp, or CBD, how Haeli and Darryl use it to create their products, and how everyone should definitely stay away from gas station CBD. They also delight us with some homemade guitar tunes! You can find out more about Haeli, Darryl, their hemp efforts (they've got a micro green operation going, too!) and shop their products on their website: www.meadowmountainhemp.farm. 16. Bringing Folks Into The Fold of How Their Food Is Produced: An Interview with Allison Boyd
Our interview series with the founding female farmers of the Deep Creek Farmers Market continues! Our very own Maureen Sheaffer is one of five founding members of the Deep Creek Farmers Market that starts on May 27th, so we've put together a series of interviews to celebrate this new community project! All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. Continuing through mid-June, we're talking with the four farmers (we will eventually interview Maureen too!) and next up is Allison Boyd of Honey Moon Farm in Accident, MD...Allison's story starts in Massachusetts where she studied political science, eventually went to law school and then received her AHA MOMENT when a college professor shared that the global industrialized food system contributed significantly to climate change. Allison has experience in advocacy work and agriculture policy, giving her a strong and passionate foundation for her farming goals. She wants to bring people into the fold of how their food is produced and she does it amazingly through her CSA program, farmers market involvement and the downright GOOD FOOD she grows on a 3-acre farm in our mountains of Maryland.During this interview, we talk about being a #fanofyourfarmer, how general food production is mostly invisible and we even get a little nerdy with some soil talk. If you're in or close to Garrett County, MD, consider becoming a future CSA member of Honey Moon Farm, shop their online store or gather their goods at the Cumberland or Deep Creek Farmers Markets. 15. From Nurse Practitioner to Friendsville Farmer: An Interview with Alea McClintock-Donahue

15. From Nurse Practitioner to Friendsville Farmer: An Interview with Alea McClintock-Donahue
Here we go...the month of May! It's a big one for MMM! We're going places! Both in conversation and in location...Our very own Maureen Sheaffer is one of five founding members of the brand spankin' new Deep Creek Farmers Market that starts on May 27th, so we've put together a series of interviews to celebrate this new community project! All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. So this month, we're talking with the four farmers (and will interview Maureen in June too!) and are kicking things off with our friend and fellow mama Alea McClintock-Donahue of Yorkie Acres Farm in Friendsville, MD...Alea has a very unique story and journey. She spent 16 years in the medical field, became a Nurse Practitioner, bought a farm at auction, bought a couple of goats, and is now a mama of two running a multi-faceted business out of she and husband Jason's farm. After working through post-partum depression and anxiety, she decided that being home and working the farm is where she needed to be. So she made a "big switch" from Nurse Practitioner to Friendsville Farmer...and from what we can see and from what Alea tells us, she's incredibly happy with her decision.Holistic health, making and selling farm products, and hosting a space for agritourism is all part of what they do at Yorkie Acres Farm. Oh, and let's not forget the goat snuggles! We visited the farm recently and got to snuggle some goats ourselves (you'll hear the goats in the episode)! 14. From Classroom to Community: Mom + Daughter Duo Open New Learning Center in Mountain Maryland
In this episode, we interview local educators and business owners, Katelyn and Suzan O'Brien, who are bringing something new and different to our area. This mom-daughter team recently opened Sylvan Learning of Garrett County in 2021 after years of teaching in the classroom and after conversations sparked during the early days of COVID. Their center can be described as "a supplemental resource to a child's education" where reading, math and writing are at the core. They also offer SAT prep, homework help, study skills, and have a whole lineup of summer camps ready for 2022.For us, these ladies got creative in COVID and made some big, difficult careers decisions that resulted in an incredible opportunity for our community. An opportunity for parents to make an added investment in their child's education and for kids to get the extra help they need in school.Katelyn and Suzan saw the opening of their learning center as a way to serve the community and become business owners at the same time, and that's MAGICAL...all four of us agree! If you're in or close to Garrett County, MD with a school-aged kiddo, you'll find this interview + episode incredibly informative. Katelyn and Suzan share all about the programs they're offering, what kind of summer camps will be available, and offer some insight into what becoming and being a Sylvan parent + student looks like. In a nutshell, there's A LOT going on at their center! For more information about Sylvan Learning of Garrett County, visit their website HERE!
