John Acosta had an estranged relationship with his father. This resulted in his father handing him shotguns and left the family home.

John talks about spiralling out of control and rebelling with a lot of negative emotions. Once John became a dad himself, he knew he had to work on some of his own issues so he could father the best way he knew how.
