For most parents, this is rooted in our own stories of inadequacy, rejection, and judgment. We react from fear and rescue, fix and take the pressure off. And for most parents, little is gained by this form of punishment. The truth is, the way you parented them at 7 stops being effective at 13. So something's got to give. You can no longer threaten to take away their toys and they do what you ask. Very often, what they do is raise you, like it's a game of poker.
