In this episode of “The Gut Health Dialogues” Podcast, Alyssa explores the relationship between Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). If you're dealing with tummy troubles or want to understand more about IBS and SIBO, this episode is for you. Alyssa simplifies complex ideas and offers practical steps to improve your gut health. Episode HighlightsWhat's IBS? Alyssa explains that IBS can cause stomach pain, bloating, and changes in bathroom habits. It impacts daily life and can be frustrating. The diagnosis relies on symptoms and no specific test for it.Meet SIBO:SIBO is like a party of bacteria where they shouldn't be—your small intestine. This can cause inflammation, absorption issues, and more problems. Symptoms are similar to IBS, making it tricky to distinguish.IBS vs. SIBO:Alyssa breaks down the differences. IBS is based on symptoms, while SIBO can be tested with a breath test. The symptoms often overlap, making it challenging to figure out what's going on.The Connection:Alyssa shares her experience, having helped many clients with both IBS and SIBO. Research suggests a strong link between the two, with up to 80% of IBS patients also having SIBO.Why Does it Happen? The reasons aren't crystal clear, but Alyssa talks about some theories, like bacteria affecting digestive movement, triggering immune responses, and messing with the gut-brain connection.Alyssa's Approach:Alyssa introduces her unique way of handling IBS and SIBO using functional medicine. She talks about the "five R's": Remove, Reinforce, Replete, Re-inoculate, and Repair. It's a holistic approach focused on long-term solutions.Alyssa wraps up by offering a resource guide with practical tips, food suggestions, and apps to help manage symptoms.
