Our Editor's Take

A rivalry usually starts with something small, like crushing on the same person, trying to make the team, or a difference of opinion. Then a true feud develops and becomes about winning at all costs. That's when things get interesting-and that's where the podcast Fierce Rivalries steps in.

The hosts of Fierce Rivalries don't have a vendetta against each other. But some might consider them an odd couple nonetheless. Delta Work is familiar to most for participating in the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race. She definitely left an impression. After that season, Delta's career only grew. She booked performances at pride parades and impersonated Adele. She also hosted two podcasts-Very That and Very Delta. The performer doesn't like to censor herself. She is hilarious, and fans think of her as an icon.

Kelsey Padgett's career has been more behind the camera. She worked as a researcher on the NPR podcast State of the Re: Union. Then, she moved to WNYC Radio, where she produced stories about science and law and even won a Peabody Award.

As much as the pair feel like polar opposites, they also complement each other. In each episode of Fierce Rivalries, Kelsey is in charge of the research and fact-checking. She shares the story of a fighting duo with Delta and the listeners and explains all the minor details. Then it's Delta's work to interrupt with her witty insights and funny observations. As Kelsey reveals more and more facts, Delta challenges them.

The Fierce Rivalries pair explores such infamous feuds as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. But they also go outside of Hollywood and talk about the NBA, ice skating, and even New York buildings. Each story, as silly as it sounds, might be the result of misogyny, homophobia, or racism. Other stories start because of simple corporate greed. The hosts try to enjoy the gossip while they also reveal the root of every rivalry. In the end, they determine who's the winner and who's the loser, or, in some cases, who's not so much a loser.
