Anjali Lama // On breaking barriers

Anjali Lama // On breaking barriers
Today’s episode has been a long time in the making and I’m glad we were finally able to do this interview with none other than model, activist and actress Anjali Lama. Born in Nuwakot, Nepal, Anjali comes from a big family of nine. In this episode, we discuss Anjali’s life in her village and what growing up in a big family was like for her. We go over her resilient journey from her village ploughing fields to building her identity and community in Kathmandu and then modelling for top Indian designers in India. Anjali is strong and adaptable to say the least and it is this with this grit that she persisted on her journey and became the first transgender model to walk Lakme Fashion Week in 2017. Her path has been anything but rosy however you can find Anjali always focused on the positives, taking matters on her own hands and persistently working hard towards her goals.  This mantra has helped her appear in Calvin Klein’s campaign, countless magazine covers and most recently a Hollywood anthology. She is the epitome of hardwork and continuous progress. I hope this conversation inspires you to break your barriers and make your dreams come true. As always, if you enjoy these conversations, please share with your friends and family. Jerusha Rai // On going back to your roots

Jerusha Rai // On going back to your roots
Today we are joined by artist & activist Jerusha Rai. Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, Jerusha’s love for music started early – be it playing in bands or church choirs, music has always been a safe haven for them.  They have always been interested in people, how societies work and you can tell this curiosity has carried over into their music as well. In this episode, we go over Jerusha’s childhood and the pressure they felt to conform to the individualized, western idea of society.  At 19, they moved to UK where they connected with artists of Nepali diaspora – to whom they credit their knowledge and growth as an artist. Currently living in NYC, Jerusha also shares with us the personal elements that have played into making of each of their albums, which I believe has made their music special to their audience. We discuss their involvement in ‘Haatemalo Collective’ – a volunteer led organization and the instrumental work they are doing in raising awareness and funds for the Dalit-bahujan movement. You can support them here.  Jerusha is humble and soulful, it was a pleasure getting to hear their story and I hope it inspires you to take some time to reflect and go back to your roots to heal and liberate yourself. As always, if you enjoy these conversations, please share with your friends and family. Santosh Shah // On setting life's formula
Today’s episode comes highly requested and it is with none other than Chef Santosh Shah. One of my highlights from last year was seeing Santosh Shah in national TV representing Nepali cuisine in Masterchef UK 2020, so it has been an absolute pleasure talking to him and learning about his journey so far. Born in Karjanha village, Nepal, Santosh Shah has been hardworking & entrepreneurial from an early age. He has over two decades of experience in the hospitality industry and from his presentation in Masterchef, we also know he is super creative. In this episode we go over Santosh’s journey from Nepal selling pauroti and plastic bags to moving to India at the age of 15, working his way to being an executive chef and moving to the UK. Santosh reminds us that you are the master of your own life & that no one knows you better than yourself. He believes that you are never too old to learn and grow either. You can see this drive from the positivity he radiates in everything he does. I hope this conversation inspires you to set and tweak your life’s formula accordingly to receive the outcome you want. You can follow Santosh on his Instagram here.   As always, if you enjoy these conversations, please share with your friends and family. Asmita Shrish // On breaking social constructs

Asmita Shrish // On breaking social constructs
Our guest for the 18th episode is award winning filmmaker Asmita Shrish. Growing up in Nepal, Asmita spent the early years of her childhood travelling around remote areas of Nepal with her family and getting homeschooled in the grounds on Mustang. She completed her undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering, Masters in Visual Arts & Animation and after some self exploration and introspection, discovered her passion for filmmaking.  You can tell from her documentaries and films that she is passionate about storytelling that anchors real issues and personal narratives which are so relatable. In this episode, we go over Asmita’s journey from Mustang to her career today as a filmmaker. She walks us through the process and stories behind her work which I found absolutely fascinating. The path to your passion is not always linear and Asmita is a perfect example. Even though it took her a while to find her calling, she is a trailblazer in her field now with the goal of breaking social constructs. If you are an aspiring filmmaker and are looking for guidance or mentorship, you can reach out to Asmita directly on Instagram here. As always, if you enjoy these conversations, please share with your friends and family.
