Recently we have witnessed a wellbeing climate change in the workplace, which has had a negative impact on mental health and wellbeing. With this new podcast series, we will be discussing how we tame the tiger.What is the tiger? The tiger is the danger, the trigger that can impact our wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us. When talking about 'Taming the Tiger' we're referring to how we deal with the dangers and threats to our wellbeing which we all face. Our illustrious hosts, Ross Abbott and Ellice Whyte explore what the concept means, what tigers we may face and subsequently how we go about taming those tigers. Monthly, we have whipped up a host of tamers from across diverse industries to explore what the Tiger looks like to them, how they go about taming the tiger and if they have tamed the tiger for others. read less

In this episode our resident tamer Ross is joined by Simon Nichols, Founder of Thrive.Here is an introduction to our amazing guest...So after spending 26 years in corporate IT sales and marketing, Simon realized the time was right to pursue his passion in helping people to manage their mental health better and to help recognize poor mental health in others.Now using the skills gained during his time at the large multinationals as a senior management position, Simon had a unique insight into how organisations and management treat mental ill health. He now helps individuals and companies to embrace good mental health work practices.Simon founded Thrive in 2019 with a sole aim to help one person at a time. Our resident Tiger Tamers, Ross & Ellice, are joined by the amazing Alicia Collinson, Senior Associate at Thrive Law.Here is an introduction to our amazing guest...Alicia is an employment law solicitor with more than five years of experience.  A lot of her motivation is centred from her background and her experiences in grief; her Dad passed away after a short illness and the mental health impact that had on her, and knowing the support she would have benefitted from, is what drives her in her employer support and supporting employees.  She completed her training in London but returned to Yorkshire after her mental health deteriorated, for a better work-life balance and to spend more time with her family. Her background is in providing employment law support to large international businesses, but Alicia loves engaging with individuals on a personal basis, particularly victims of discrimination. The opportunity to focus on this work is something that she prizes about her role at Thrive. Much of her early work came during #MeToo so she is highly passionate about supporting women and fighting for female equality at work.Alicia also volunteers for the Maternity Action helpline and leads Thrive’s partnership with Pregnant Then Screwed in supporting new mothers in their discrimination issues. He has worked with the House of Commons on the topic of mental health reform in elite sports and became a mental health ambassador for Mind and YoungMinds after being diagnosed with depression, bipolar tendencies and anxiety shortly after the 2012 Olympic Games.After retiring at the age of 28 from a career that included European titles and world championships medals, Jack stepped into the corporate world to lead on well-being at BBC Studios during the COVID-19 pandemic. This month our resident Tiger Tamers, Ross Abbott & Ellice Whyte, are joined by the amazing Nick Wilson, Speaker, Presenter and Content Creator (aka Disabled Adventurer), Championing Survivors of Suicide and Abilities over Disabilities.Here is an introduction to our amazing guest...He openly, and very frankly, shares his lived experiences with mental illness, physical disability and surviving a suicide attempt to; inform society, encourage change and inspire and empower others, with authenticity and a message of hope.He is also an Army Veteran with an impactful story to tell. After 14 years of service, Nick left the military, with a spinal injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD, as a result of multiple deployments across the globe such as, Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. Through his battle with both physical and mental disabilities, surviving attempted suicide and managing suicidal ideation, Nick continually demonstrates resilience and the ability to overcome adversity, whilst forging a new career as a successful public speaker, budding presenter, video producer and an adventurer always looking for his next challenge.Through finding ways to better manage his health conditions and environment, Nick prevents his disabilities from dictating his life or fulfilling his purpose of selflessly helping others. This month our resident Tiger Tamers, Ross Abbott & Ellice Whyte, are joined by the amazing Alice Hendy, Founder & CEO of R;pple.Here is an introduction to our brilliant guest...Alice lost her only sibling, her brother Josh, on 25th November 2020 to suicide at 21 years old. She speaks so eloquently and with such power on mental health, suicide, bereavement, and the signs to look out for to provide hope to our loved ones in their darkest hour. Her presentation delivery is incredible, from the heart, real, professional, passionate, relevant, informative, and impressive. Alice’s brother Josh had been researching techniques to take his own life via harmful internet searches. This month our resident Tiger Tamers, Ross Abbott & Ellice Whyte, are joined by the inspirational Brian Wood MC, Veteran, Owner of Keep Attacking & Sunday Times Best Selling Author.Here is an introduction to our brilliant guest...At the age of 23, Brian was thrust into the front line in Iraq, in the infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a charge across open ground with insurgents firing at just five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross by Queen Elizabeth II.But Brian's story had only just begun. Struggling to re-integrate into family life, he suffered from PTSD. Then, five years later, a letter arrived: it summoned him to give evidence at the Al-Sweady Inquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq invasion of 2003.After years of public shame, Brian took the stand and delivered a powerful testimony, and following the tense inquiry room scenes, justice was finally served.Phil Shiner, the lawyer who made the false accusations, was struck off and stripped of an honorary doctorate. Brian wrote his story Double Crossed: A Code of Honour, A Complete Betrayal - which became a Sunday Times Bestseller and it was commissioned for a BBC 90-minute dramatisation, Danny Boy. This month our resident Tiger Tamers, Ross Abbott & Ellice Whyte, welcome our very first guest on to the podcast. Simon Blake OBE, joins us on Taming the Tiger (they do say go big or go home... and we definitely went big for the first ever guest). Now, an introduction is in order for our guest...Simon Blake OBE joined MHFA England as Chief Executive in October 2018, leading the social enterprise to achieve its vision of normalising society’s attitudes and behaviours around mental health, through training one in ten of the population.  He has been instrumental in leading MHFA England’s commitment to become a truly anti-racist social enterprise.  He Chairs the Dying Matters Campaign and the Support after Suicide Partnership.  Prior to this he has held a number of trustee and Chair positions over the last two decades including Compact Voice, Black Health Agency, Diversity Role Models and Stonewall.  In 2020 he was named as a Global Diversity Leader and in 2021, on the 2021 Pride Power List. He is a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute was awarded an OBE for services to the voluntary sector and young people.
