I had initially intended to come up with some of my own, but due to Christmas plans, I was not able to complete this. So instead I looked up some of the most recommended Christmas one shot pre written scenarios that are available on DMs Guild, as well as looking up some good festive plot hooks and scenario ideas that would work for a one shot, but require a DM to flesh out in their system of choice. Starting out with an awful reveal trailer, Paramount wisely took Sonic's design back to the drawing board and ended up delivering a successful film franchise. With a third entry in the franchise set for release later this week, I wanted to talk about my thoughts and feelings of the first 2 movies and the limited Knuckles television series (despite not having finished that one yet). The Sonic film came out prior to any of the ultra successful video game adaptations we see more regularly today. In that sense it was a real trailblazer. They were great adaptations of the books, and also served to really elevate the fantasy genre into the mainstream eye (for both good and ill). Lord of the Rings has always been a natural fit for the roleplaying game hobby. It hasn't had too many games made of it, but the ones that have been published vary greatly between all 3 of them. This week I do an overview of all the Lord of the Rings games that have been released, and my impressions of them. I have not played all of them, but have had fair experience with most. The wait was worth it! This classic is a hidden gem, that is thankfully much more accessible today thanks to Steam, and particularly the Steam Deck, which this is a perfect fit for! I wanted to be sure I completed this game before its remake comes out next year, and I am glad that I decided to do this! This is a classic RPG that stands right up there with the classics among Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. This game sets itself apart with the world it is building, and how good the characters feel to interact with. Make sure you don't miss this one if you are an RPG fan. It got me thinking of other controversies this hobby has endured and made me wonder what this will look like in another decade? I wonder because I often look back on prior controversies with the benefit of hindsight. Part of the reason we love roleplaying games is getting into the role of someone in a completely different world or environment than our own. There are so many ways that you can make that illusion stand tall and as well, so many ways that it can go sideways and turn into a session where you are all just staring at each other around the table and rolling dice thinking "what am I doing here?". The DMG is almost always one of my favourite of the core rulebooks, and this one lives up to that so far for the revised rulebooks as well. Firstly, it is a large and very well-known license to get, and secondly this marked the first of their 'gigacart' releases. This huge cart was able to successfully contain the first 3 Tomb Raider games in their entirety. I was really curious how this one would turn out for so many reasons, and I was thrilled to see that the games are exactly as I remembered them. This impressive cart handily recreates the feeling and atmosphere of the original Tomb Raider trilogy. The truth is that you really do not need this tome to run the game when it comes down to it. However, to simply ignore it would be to deprive yourself of a great resource for the game. Each edition had it's own version of the DMG (some editions had more than one DMG!), and each one varies in how useful it really is. This core book began life in AD&D 1e after it was discovered how much advice was usually needed to help DMs all over with running their games. This tome has been a staple the game (and other games) ever since. From its utterly gorgeous aesthetic, to the rewarding gameplay loop and unlikely masterful blend of disparate gaming concepts, this game really sunk deep into my heart. Although they each approach horror from very different angles, they have both earned a reputation of having excellent titles in their franchise, as well as some significant stinkers too. With Halloween just around the corner, I thought it was good timing to do it now. This is a very dark game and really does set a new standard for grim dark games. However, don't let the astonishing (and sometimes shocking) artwork and presentation deter you, because buried within its pages, the Mörk Borg rulebook is a very competent and inspiring game. Simplicity is it's focus but it does not sacrifice it's fun or level of engagement player's can have. While I think of it as part of the OSR, at least the new wave of OSR, it isn't trying to just be D&D, it is trying to be a wholly unique experience unto itself. Despite not leading the generation in sales comparatively, this system innovated in significant ways that are still evident in the gaming industry today.
