Send us a Text Message.Everything's Canceled podcast is back and this week your hosts Herman and Lorena are taking you on a big adventure with the extraordinary and unusual story of Pee-wee Herman. The character of "Pee-wee Herman" was created by actor/comedian Paul Reubens during a 1978 improv exercise with the comedy group the Groundlings. After failing to be hired on Saturday Night Live, he developed a stage show based on the character and began making appearances on late night tv as Pee-wee. Pee-wee was a hit, audiences laughed along with his boyish exuberance and he was immediately recognizable for his tight fitting grey suit, red bow-tie, crew-cut hair, high-pitched voice, and distinctive laugh. This lead to a CBS television show Pee-Wee's Playhouse (1986-1991) and movies "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" (1985) and "Big Top Pee-wee" (1988), featuring numerous memorable characters, scenes, and jokes they are now considered cult classics. At the height of his popularity in the late 80's, Pee-wee toys and merchandise generated as much as $25 million annually. In 1991, at an adult movie theater in Sarasota, FL Reubens was caught in a sting by Sarasota PD and charged with indecent exposure. News swept the media, the strange man-child character caught with his pants down in a XXX theater was irresistible fodder and Pee-wee became the butt of many jokes. Re-runs of Pee-wee's Playhouse were taken off the air and Pee-wee toys were pulled from shelves. In 1999 his career was partially revived as Paul Reubens was cast in the star-vehicle, superhero film "Mystery Men" and he appeared as himself for the first time on television to promote the film. Then in 2002 a "tip from a witness" lead to an investigation into Paul Reubens and actor Jeffrey Jones, both of their houses were searched by police and Jones was found in possession of photos he had created of a 14 year old boy posing nude, wearing costumes and with stuffed animals. Paul Reubens was found with, according to him, "muscle magazines, homosexual vintage erotica, and photographic studies of teen nudes". He plead "no contest" to misdemeanor possession of obscene material improperly depicting a child under the age of 18 in sexual conduct. Despite his plea, Reubens claimed, "what the city attorneys viewed as pornography, he considered innocent art" and that he is "not a pedophile". Join us as we discuss the life and career of Pee-wee Herman, attempt to answer the question of whether Pee-wee was indeed canceled and whether or not it was deserved. What was Pee-wee/Reubens' sexuality and how does the affect our relationship to his character? Your hosts Lorena and Herman discuss and analyze Drake's latest song and music video "I Kind Of Relate", released concurrently with the documentary "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" (2024) on which he revealed he was the victim of child sexual assault by actor/dialogue coach Brian Peck. Will there be a Drake and Josh (2004-2007) reboot? Lorena considers the strangeness of the real life relationship between Drake Bell and Josh Peck and puts it in context with a timeline of Drake's life including his issues with substance abuse and 2021 conviction for attempted child endangerment and disseminating matter harmful to a juvenile. We cover the allegations made by Drake's ex-girlfriend, actress Melissa Lingafelt, on her Tik Tok of physical and verbal abuse, including her description of the verbal abuse saying "imagine the worst type of abuse", mirroring Drake's description of his own abuse from the "Quiet on Set" documentary. We also cover additional allegations made by additional ex-girlfriends Gillian Leos and actress Paydin LoPachin, including the allegation that Drake "slept with 100s of underage girls" and confirmations of similar verbal and physical abuse. We also describe three additional allegations of statutory rape made against Drake by anonymous Tik Tok users, sent to, screenshot and posted to social media by Lingafelt. We briefly consider Drake's response to Lingafelt's allegations. We cover one more concerning Tik Tok video, that appears to show Drake in a relationship with another teenage girl recently, within the the last few years. We also discuss the letter written by actress Kimmy Robertson (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), Twin Peaks (1990-1991), Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991), in defense of Brian Peck, to the judge in his 2004 case in which he plead "no contest" to charges of oral copulation with a minor under 16 and performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old. In the hand-written letter she describes Peck's victim, who we now know to be Drake Bell, as a "sleuth-like" and "outrageous, overtly gay oversexed person", who she claims no homosexual male crew members would be alone in a room with. We wrap up by discussing the image we have been presented of a freshly post-rehab, therapized and "healed" Drake Bell. Should we be critical of "Quiet on Set" for not appropriately addressing Drake's past? Can we comprehend and see Drake as both victim and abuser? Should we do the same for Brian Peck considering the statistical likelihood that he could be a victim as well? What does accountability look like for abusers and how do we break cycles of abuse? Send us a Text Message.Remember Drake Bell from Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh (2004-2007) and the ID/Max documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV (2024)? Wasn't he canceled for sexting a teenager or something? Everything's Canceled podcast is back and in this episode your hosts Herman and Lorena are digging deep into allegations against former child-actor, musician, and child sex abuse survivor Drake Bell. If the allegations are to be believed they paint a picture of Drake Bell, throughout his adult live, having groomed, dated, and sexually assaulted multiple underage girls, most of whom were about 15 years old, the same age he was when he was abused by Brian Peck. In 2021 Drake Bell took a deal and plead guilty to felony attempted child endangerment and disseminating matter harmful to a juvenile in an Ohio case. Does this mirror the situation regarding Drake's own sex abuse trial vs Brian Peck, in which Peck also took a plea deal, received a light sentence and was able to continue working on sets with children in Hollywood despite being a registered sex offender?  We cover the online video of the sentencing hearing that includes the victim's statement in which she details allegations against Drake that did not make it to trial.  Is Drake guilty of grooming her from age 11 to 15 or is he really the victim, entrapped by a diabolically deceitful teenage super-fan who misrepresented herself by contacting Drake via finstagram as his numerous online defenders would have you believe? She describes a relationship with Drake characterized by the duality of her idolization and infatuation with him and fearing his cruelty, that "if she upset him, he would make her cry and feel disgusting about herself". What exactly did Drake mean when, during a social media conversation, he asks her age, and when she responds that she is now 15 years old, he tells her to "Hurry up"? Does this represent grooming and desire or, as his defense lawyers claim, "complete intent not to engage"? We also discuss details of his defense, how the lawyers avoid and simultaneously seemingly confirm that messages exchanged between Drake and the victim were "sexual in nature", and attempts to explain away allegations of specific incidents of sexual assault by claiming that other witnesses were present, while implicitly confirming that Drake and the victim were indeed together on the occasions in question. We reflect on the victim's assertion that Drake is not remorseful and "has used tactics to gain sympathy from the public" and discuss his behavior leading up to, during, and after the trial, and up through current day keeping these assertions in mind. We also consider Drake's history with drug and alcohol abuse in context of the allegations. This time your hosts Herman and Lorena continue the discussion around Nickelodeon raised by the Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV documentary series focusing on the career of former dialogue coach, actor, and convicted child sexual abuser Brian Peck and his victim, former child star, actor and musician Drake Bell of Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh (2004-2007). We discuss Brian's rise to prominence in Hollywood as an actor and then as a dialogue coach to numerous child stars, the role he played on Nickelodeon's All That (1994-2005) as "Pickle Boy" and how he gained access to Drake Bell while working on The Amanda Show (1999-2002). We discuss the suspicions raised by Drake's manager and father Joe Bell about Peck's relationship with his son and how they were dismissed as possible homophobia against the openly gay Peck.  We discuss Brian's manipulation, escalation and ongoing abuse of his victim, the circumstances that lead to his eventual exposure as a predator and how the situation was treated by management at Nickelodeon.  We describe how this leads to an investigation, criminal trial and attempt at justice by Drake, but despite the severity of the charges, Peck receives a light sentence in a plea deal, partially thanks to the support of numerous famous and powerful friends and former Hollywood colleagues who even allow Peck to continue working with children on the set of the Disney Channel's The Suite Life of Zach & Cody (2005-2008), despite being a convicted and registered sex offender. We also describe a culture behind the scenes at Nickelodeon that allowed several other child sexual abusers to gain access to children while working on set, including one act of abuse that took place on the Nickelodeon lot by an offender who had been previously convicted of child sexual assault before being hired at Nickelodeon. We finish with our opinions and some questions raised by the Brian Peck situation: Did Brian Peck have more victims? How many child stars make it to adulthood succesfully? Why are there so many abusers in Hollywood and how does the cycle of abuse repeat generation after generation? What does "disillusionment" and cancel culture tell us about our relationship to the entertainment industry and entertainers we used to love? In the late 90's and early 2000's country music was huge and the Dixie Chicks were on top of the world. Their albums Wide Open Spaces (1998) and Fly (1999) both sold over 10 million copies and they topped both Pop and Country charts with #1 songs like "There's Your Trouble", "Wide Open Spaces", "You Were Mine", "Cowboy Take Me Away", "Without You", and "Travelin' Soldier". Then the group found themselves the center of massive nation-wide media-fueled controversy after lead singer Natalie Maines made un-rehearsed comments on stage at a show in London in early 2003 about how they did not support the impending US invasion of Iraq and that they were "ashamed" to share their home state of Texas with president George W. Bush. In a post 9-11 patriotic fervor The Chicks became the target of massive scrutiny and derision by the media, public, and in particular, country music radio stations, which started receiving so many complaints that they almost completely stopped playing the Chicks' music entirely. The Chicks chose not to back down and the rest is history.
