The end of 90mm framing with Kim Aitken (Truss House)

The end of 90mm framing with Kim Aitken (Truss House)
In this episode we’re pleased to welcome back Kim Aitken, the founder and co-director of Truss House. This time we’re tapping into Kim’s knowledge of building science, design and regulation, and her experience in the Canadian and New Zealand markets to help us explore the question “is this the end of 90mm framing?” Kim believes that the global network of Frame and Truss designers, fabricators and merchants hold the key to ending an era of code minimum homes. Her journey brought Kim from her home country of Ireland to Scotland to study engineering and onto Canada to work as a specialist structural design engineer.  Tackling structural and sustainable design in a region known for 6-month winters gave Kim a profound understanding of the risks sub-par housing can pose to individuals and communities, which inspired her to design and patent the Truss House systems (known in Canada as Aitken Frame Homes).   On a mission to introduce Truss Housing to the Asia Pacific region, Kim realised New Zealand would be her future home, securing a place there as an Edmund Hillary Fellow which honours her commitment to creating more sustainable and climate resilient housing outcomes for ANZ and the world. Show notes and further reading Truss House website New Zealand Building Code Regulations How to follow us: www.pryda.com.au / www.pryda.co.nz LinkedIn Instagram Facebook YouTube Follow hosts and today’s guests: Adam Dawson and Kim Aitken on LinkedIn.   Send us an email: adawson@prydaanz.com    If you liked our podcast, please remember to like, share and subscribe. Improving construction planning and operations with advanced weather modelling – with Wade Lamberth (Chief Executive Officer, WeatherEye)
Wherever you live, chances are you’ve had your best laid plans ruined by inclement weather recently. Adverse weather conditions are causing major disruptions in the construction industry, adding delays, costs and complexity.  In this episode, we are joined by Wade Lamberth, CEO at WeatherEye, a weather risk consultancy founded by former Royal Australia Navy meteorologists.  With his experience in the Navy as a maritime warfare officer, Wade is bringing his military planning expertise to help the construction industry to utilise better decision making and manage operational risk more efficiently.  Using climatology data from the last 30 years, WeatherEye’s scheduling application helps construction companies to build their own weather thresholds for each build component and develop a weather operational plan with more confidence.  WeatherEye is on the lookout for case study participants. You can contact Wade on LinkedIn if you’re interested. Further reading and show notes:WeatherEye Weatherspark BOM climate predictions ENSO Windy.com ISO31000 How to follow us:www.pryda.com.au / www.pryda.co.nz LinkedIn Instagram Facebook YouTube Follow hosts and today’s guests: Adam Dawson and Wade Lamberth on LinkedIn. Recycling - good for the planet and the bottom line - with John Recourt (MB PreFab Big River Group) and Russell Norton (The Mulch Centre)
Today's episode is one of the first steps we're taking in our Pryda for the Planet campaign. We want to celebrate and promote businesses going above and beyond in the pursuit of more sustainable practices. This is a two part episode. First we'll be joined by John Recourt (HR & WHSE Site Manager) from MB PreFab Big River Group. John is on a mission to eliminate waste from the fabrication process and find sustainable alternatives to disposing of timber off cuts, plastics, metals, cardboard, paper, printer cartridges and more. MB PreFab is achieving some fantastic results and they're on target to reduce their landfill impact by 95%. Reducing the environmental footprint is just the start. These initiatives are also supporting local businesses, empowering their employees to take ownership of waste management processes, and having a positive impact on the bottom line with an estimated cost saving of $65k AUD per annum. Then in part 2, we'll be joined by Russell Norton from the Mulch Centre in Geelong, Victoria. Russell and his team are working with MB PreFab to take their timber off cuts to be processed into other products.
