Our Editor's Take

KILLED is not a true crime podcast. There are no unsolved murders or missing-person stories here. This investigative series doesn't seek to correct the wrongs of the entire world. Instead, it scrutinizes the journalism industry itself. It examines why a whole field that dedicates itself to exposing the truth sometimes chooses to suppress it.

Every day, all over the world, stories get "killed." Editors file them in a "special cabinet" under their desks or on their hard drives and never revisit them. It could be that the news became outdated or a subject changed their mind. Maybe another publication got there first and scooped the journalist. Perhaps the story was not good enough to get published. But some kills are different. Sometimes it feels like people behind a curtain are directing the decision. That the story got "buried" not because it revealed too little but because it revealed too much. Those are the cases that podcast host Justine Harman sets out to expose on the KILLED podcast.

Harman has her own experience with articles getting killed. She published articles in ELLE, The New York Times Book Review, and Glamour. But there were a handful of times when her articles didn't make the pages. This gives her a unique perspective to explore this topic on KILLED. Along with notable journalists like Scott Anderson and Anne Helen Petersen, Harman follows the tale of killed reports. She reveals the research process and how a narrative emerged. She explains how the correspondent presented it to editors and how it got traded around. This all leads to the final decision not to publish and why.

The topics on KILLED range from sexual misconduct in Hollywood to Vladimir Putin. The podcast exposes physician negligence and the tale of a mysterious Soviet-born billionaire. They let listeners in on the challenges of being a journalist and the shady side of the industry.
