I Beg Your Pardon?
Yesterday
I Beg Your Pardon?
Should Biden issue a pardon to Donald Trump for his federal crimes? Will that help with America’s standing or do we have 99 OTHER problems and Trump ain’t one?! There have been some Republicans and Democrats calling for a preemptive Trump pardon. Is this kind of grace-giving exactly what’s wrong with the Democratic Party?     Also, can Trump vote now that he’s been convicted? In Florida, where Trump lives, folks with felonies have limited voting rights and Trump does not qualify. BUT Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, has signaled that he’ll bend (READ: Break!) the law to allow Trump to vote. The hosts also take a look at voting after conviction more broadly and the stigma that follows returning citizens even after they’ve served their time.      The hosts also dissect a viral video of a man who faced incarceration after driving with a suspended license…hilarious as it may seem, there’s more to this video that mainstream media missed.   And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam—keep sending in your questions and comments on IG @nativelandpod.    We are 152 days away from the election. Polls Be Damned?!

Polls Be Damned?!
Our prayers are with the families of those with loved ones in Rafah, but most importantly our calls to action are too. Where do we go from here, y’all? This week hosts Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross ask how many red lines have to be crossed before the Biden Administration takes meaningful action.    Speaking of Biden, there’s growing panic within the Democratic Party over increasing signs that the President is STRUGGLING to gain a lead in the 2024 election over white-supremacist and would-be-tyrant Donald Trump. The hosts look at the “signs” and debate the usefulness of election polling.      And in this week’s deep dive, the hosts respond to listener questions about folks in the community who question voting for Biden and who his base really is. We know y’all are struggling with this year’s presidential election and the feeling that folks have to choose between “the lesser of two evils”. The hosts navigate this struggle for themselves—IN REAL TIME—and offer some tips on how to talk to friends and family about it.    Gaza has been in the news a lot lately, including some truly horrific videos that have been coming from Rafah this last week. Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue his assault on the city despite the civilian casualties and increasing condemnation from the international community. So, what are we going to do about it?? SOMETHING. The call to act is upon us.    Sign the petition to support a presidential pardon for Marilyn Mosby at justiceformarilynmosby.com…yep, STILL.    Take part in our NLP poll by clicking here.   We are 159 days away from the election. US vs. Bleach Blonde Bad Built Butch Body
Black women are under attack—from eyelashes in Congress, to venture funds for Black businesses.  This week’s episode is a recording of Native Land Pod’s first LIVE audience show! Hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum paid a visit to the women’s global leadership summit, ExcelerateHER, in Miami for a town hall takeover!   The hosts take questions from esteemed conference attendees about how the Black community can best harness its political power, and counter the forces of bigotry and exclusion. They’ll confront specific issues facing the community, like financial literacy and racially charged attacks, and offer tangible solutions. This episode is all about strategy, action, and solidarity y’all!    Notable questioners featured in this week’s show include, Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Brittany Packnett Cunningham, Bevy Smith, Jewel Burks Solomon, and Jessica Nabongo.   We are 165 days away from the election. Debate on! Grift or Gift at FAMU? Are Black Women Headed to the Senate?
This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum ask: when will we see a Black woman in the US Senate?? The United States has only ever had three Black women as senators. Currently there are none, but two candidates may change that come November…    Speaking of elections, what’s up with these Trump surrogates already denying the ‘24 election before it’s even happened? And what will actually happen if Trump loses in November but his supporters don’t accept the results? The hosts discuss this and the relevance (or not) of presidential debates.    Then, our resident expert on all things FAMU, Andrew Gillum, covers the drama coming out of his alma mater. Florida A&M University received a $237 MILLION dollar donation last week, complete with a huge check that they showed off at graduation. But it turns out the whole thing was a hoax??   In Politics Are Everywhere— Welcome to the W! Sports reporter Tiffany Cross opens up the WNBA season.    And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFan listeners.    Sign the petition and support Marilyn Mosby at justiceformarilynmosby.com.   We are 172  number of days away from the election. White Supremacists in Congress? And Marilyn Mosby Stops By
This week, hosts Andrew Gillum, Tiffany Cross, and Angela Rye start off with another brief update from Trump-trial land. Then onto a special message from Bernie Sanders to young voters—will it matter?    And speaking of political messaging, New York’s Governor Hochul’s cringe-worthy comments about “Black kids in the Bronx” this week. The hosts discuss the blindspots that sometimes exist with liberal white politicians.    And Gov Hochul isn’t the only politician garnering some controversy over racially-charged remarks. We got a reminder last week that some members of Congress are just straight up racist. And so we ask, are there white supremacists in Congress? Spoiler alert: yes, and the hosts will name a few.    In Politics Are Everywhere we examine violence and the ongoing beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Given the drive-by shooting outside Drake’s house, the hosts ask: at what point does beef in hip hop culture go too far?   Last but so far from least, there’s a special guest on the show today…    Justice for Marilyn Mosby! Call the White House and ask for her pardon at 202-456-1111. Sign the petition, donate, and show your support at justiceformarilynmosby.com.    We are 179 number of days away from the election y’all, welcome home!   —--------- We want to hear from you! Unrest, Death Row, and Euphoria
This week, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum give a brief update on the Trump circus and his recent interview with Time Magazine.    Then onto news you won’t see on cable: what if hundreds of people–mostly Black men–were being slowly and painfully killed, and the government was in on it? An update on state-sanctioned lethal injections.    And guess who’s hiring? Police forces across the country, which have seen an increase in their ranks for the first time since 2020.    We’ve seen those police hard at work on college campuses, where they’ve been breaking up encampments as they arrest hundreds of students protesting the war in Gaza. The hosts unpack what we’re seeing unfold at schools across the country.    In Georgia, the battleground state is grappling with a new voter suppression law that could disenfranchise thousands and have dire consequences for the Biden administration.    Then, in Politics Are Everywhere, Tiffany delivers her signature sports expertise. There are big changes coming to how we watch NBA games; Tiffany has the details.    And of course, we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFan listeners. Catch and Kill, The Right to Protest
Apr 25 2024
Catch and Kill, The Right to Protest
This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross go to the circus: Trump’s Trials. According to the trial testimony of David Pecker, Donald Trump participated in a “catch and kill” scheme with the National Enquirer. The paid scheme prevented them from publishing negative stories about him during the 2016 election. If only we were all so rich…we still wouldn’t do it!  And at the Supreme Court, oral arguments begin to determine whether former President Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for acts committed while in office.   Protests against the war in Gaza have spread from Google to  Morehouse, NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Yale University (among others). What is up with framing the student-led, anti-war protests as antisemitic? We unpack it on the pod!    In Politics Are Everywhere, American Airlines has made it more difficult to qualify for their frequent flier points, and Angela and Tiff are NOT happy. Andrew asks, is this first world problems y’all?    And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners! We are 193 days away from Election Day.    Welcome home y’all!    Sign the petition to free Marilyn Mosby by clicking this link or going to shorturl.at/cly56.    —--------- We want to hear from you! Weed the People
We are 15 episodes in and this week, hosts Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross start with the latest in Trump’s many legal woes. The Stormy Daniels "hush money" trial started on Monday. You’re forgiven if you can’t remember what that one is even about– we got you– plus implications for the Trump presidential campaign. Then, there’s ANOTHER case before SCOTUS this week that could have HUGE implications for Trump.    For this week’s deep dive: Minority Rule. Minority rule is when a minority of the population has the majority of the power. Sound familiar? The hosts ask how a shrinking minority of white male conservatives are able to pass laws and policies that most of us don’t actually want. It goes alllll the way back to the beginning, y’all, maybe our democracy isn’t so democratic?    We’re also shedding some light on the importance of Black Maternal Health Week. Black and Brown mothers are about three times as likely to die during childbirth. These are totally preventable deaths, we gotta talk about it!!    As we all know, politics are everywhere, and this week they’re in women’s sports. College basketball star, Caitlin Clark, and some of our faves like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, were just drafted into the WNBA, and folks are upset about how LITTLE they’ll be paid compared to their NBA counterparts. It is literally a fraction of a percent, y’all…     Then, Native Pod goes green as Tiffany clarifies the politics of cannabis for this upcoming 4/20 weekend. And of course, the hosts respond to your comments and questions. We are 200 days until Election Day 2024!   Welcome home, y'all!   —--------- We want to hear from you! The Real Boogeymen: The Karens and Kateys
Welcome Home!   This week, hosts Tiffany Cross, Andrew Gillum, and Angela Rye discuss EBT. “No thanks.” That’s what nearly half the Republican governors in the country are saying to a federal program to feed hungry kids. They’re turning down FREE money to feed kids– and why??    Question: what would a political ad made just for you look like? What issues would it speak to? This week the hosts break down political ads as we brace to be flooded with them this election season.    And how many of you are still rocking with the same crew you’ve been with? Old friends are great, right. The hosts wonder if the Democratic party feels the same. With so many centrist Republicans feeling alienated by MAGA and Trump, might the Dems try to attract the “politically homeless” Republicans.    Stick around to the end of the episode for Politics Are Everywhere, when the hosts discuss rap beef—a part of hip hop since its origin!! After J. Cole and Kendrick exchanged diss tracks, J. Cole said: “no disrespect.”     Ohhh…okay.    Check out ESPN’s The Crossover; Angela is an Executive Producer and the special was nominated for three Sports Emmys!!    —--------- We want to hear from you! What is Project 2025?

What is Project 2025?
Welcome home!    This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross turn their gaze towards Tennessee, where state lawmakers voted to fire the entire board of Tennessee State University last week. Does this have anything to do with the $2 billion dollars the state owes TSU, the state’s only publicly funded HBCU?! Probably.    Staying in the south, Crystal Mason recently ended her years-long battle with the Texas courts, who sentenced her to prison for FIVE YEARS just for trying to vote. In 2016, she cast a provisional ballot not knowing that it was illegal for her to do so since she was technically still under state supervision. Her life has been consumed by BS (excuse the language) legal battles ever since.    Y’all have been asking and now our hosts answer– what’s up with Project 2025? On this week’s deep dive, we dig into the woke-obsessed 900+ page document that outlines the republican plan to literally remake the federal government in their image. If Trump wins, the plan calls for him to replace tens of thousands of public employees in the FBI, Department of Justice, and more with conservative loyalists. They’re gearing up for war, y’all!   Stick around for Politics Are Everywhere, where the hosts discuss Washington State’s new Strippers’ Bill of Rights.   And as always, we’ll hear from you. Keep those questions and comments coming!!    —--------- We want to hear from you! The Trump Reckoning That Wasn’t

The Trump Reckoning That Wasn’t
Welcome home!  Hosts Andrew Gillum, Tiffany Cross, and Angela Rye kick off this week’s episode with a look at Trump’s many many many federal and state charges (88 to be exact). You might’ve heard that Trump got out of paying a whole bunch of money to New York state this week— nearly half a billion dollars— the penalty for committing fraud by over-valuing his properties. He will still have to pay a $175 million bond, and New York State’s Attorney General Letitia James may seize his properties if he doesn’t cough it up.  From New York, the hosts take us across the country to cover the Republican anti-DEI offensive. More than half of states have introduced bills to limit diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The hosts take a look at these bills and the arguments folks are making for and against them. Why do some Black folks side with Republicans on this issue? What does it mean to be “equitable” and “inclusive,” anyway?  Finally, it’s time to talk about Haiti. The situation there continues to escalate; the UN says that gangs have taken control of most of the capital city, Port-Au-Prince. The situation is complex and impossible to understand without knowing some of Haiti’s rich history of emancipation and struggle.  Finally, don’t forget to check out the biopic about Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to run for president, out now on Netflix. You’ll hear about it in this week’s call to action!  —--------- We want to hear from you! Trump’s Bloodbath… The First Step
Welcome home!  This week, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross start the show with a look at Trump’s recent “bloodbath” debacle.  Trump’s violent language on the campaign trail is nothing new, so how concerned should we be about political violence? What are the lasting effects of promoting violence as a political strategy? Is it “terrorism”??  Plus, you remember the First Step Act, that bipartisan criminal justice reform bill passed by the 115th Congress and signed into law by Donald Trump in 2018 that Republicans were patting themselves on the back for? You might have missed it in the mainstream news, but the ultra conservative Supreme Court just struck down a key part of the bill and the Justice who drafted the majority opinion MIGHT surprise you! The hosts dig into the SCOTUS ruling for this week’s deep dive.  Are you HIGH? Or feeling low because Mary Jane is still a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substance ACT? Well, MVP Harris has some thoughts on it. If you’re in Baltimore, support Marilyn Mosby by showing up to her rally. It’s at noon this Saturday March 23rd at the Druid Hill YMCA and this is just... the first step.  And since we know so many of you listen just for Tiffany’s sports analysis, she’ll be back to break down March Madness in this week’s Politics Are Everywhere. You can fill out your NCAA Women’s (and men’s) March Madness Bracket on the NCAA website.  —--------- We want to hear from you!
