Our Editor's Take

The Indecent with Kiki Andersen podcast is an entertaining examination of society and its taboos. Host Kiki Andersen is a stand-up comedian and actor. She's a former news reporter and received two Emmy awards for her work. Kiki admits that it takes something special to surprise her these days. She's fascinated by the digital world and wants to explore the stories behind every taboo.

In the podcast's first episode, Kiki reveals how she first found internet fame. Her original name was Kelly, and people mistook her on Twitter for being Kellyanne Conway. Kellyanne was a former counselor to Donald Trump. When Kiki received her negative tweets instead, she started replying. She recalls this funny moment and the impacts of social media on people's identities.

In each Indecent with Kiki Andersen episode, Kiki invites a guest to explore a fascinating topic. In one episode, speaker Bridget Todd joins to talk about disinformation online. She fights extremism in the digital space and is passionate about inclusivity. Kiki and Bridget discuss the positive impact and dangers of access to platforms such as TikTok. Storytelling can be powerful. But if only some people have a voice, it can have damaging consequences. Bridget also talks about finding safe spaces for people to have meaningful conversations.

In another episode, activist and comedian Kaytlin Bailey joins. As a former sex worker, she wants to share true stories about the profession. Kaytlin talks about becoming a sex worker at 18, not for the money but due to misinformation about her body. Through the role, she learned negotiation skills and how to advocate for herself. It's a fascinating insight into a profession often only understood by stereotypes.

Indecent with Kiki Andersen provides a playlist of honest, thoughtful conversations. Listeners should expect adult content with topics including porn, technology, religion and politics.

So Extra: No Kidding Around with Margaret Cho
Start flexing those pelvic floor muscles! We're feeling a big contraction coming on, which means it's time to bring this bonus content with comedian Margaret Cho talking more about being childless-by-choice into the world. Margaret Cho is a comedian, actor, musician, advocate, entrepeneur and artist. Right as she was starting her stand-up career at age 14, Margaret won a comedy contest to open for Jerry Seinfeld in the early ’90s. She performed over 300 concerts within two years. Arsenio Hall introduced her to late night audiences, Bob Hope put her on a prime time special and, seemingly overnight, Margaret Cho became a household name. Her groundbreaking, controversial ABC sitcom, All-American Girl (1994) soon followed. In 1999, her groundbreaking Off-Broadway one-woman show, I’m The One That I Want, toured to national acclaim and was made into both a best-selling book and feature film of the same name. Margaret returned to television in 2008 with the VH1 series, The Cho Show. 2010 culminated with another high honor, a second Grammy Award nomination for Comedy Album of the Year for Cho Dependent, her incredibly funny music album. Margaret’s creative side moved full speed ahead with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress on 30 Rock, where she played Kim Jong II. The five-time Grammy and Emmy nominee released her second studio album, American Myth, earning her another Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine named her one of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics, calling her “the sort of funny, sex-positive feminist and LGBT activist younger comics continue to look up to.” "Indecent with Kiki Andersen" is a production of Next Chapter Podcasts. Episode 1 - "Dream Blunt Rotation" with Benjamin Y. Fong (Quick Fixes: Drugs in America from Prohibition to the 21st Century Binge)
If we haven't made it clear yet, Indecent's main guiding principle is pretty simple: no narcs allowed. Especially when we invite academic and author Benjamin Y. Fong over to hang out in our parents' basement to talk drugs, drug policy, and drug culture, and how Americans especially love to get smashed. Benjamin Y. Fong is an Honors Faculty Fellow and the Director of the Center for Work and Democracy at Arizona State University. He's written for Jacobin, Current Affairs, The Outline and the New York Times, and he's the author of Quick Fixes: Drugs in America from Prohibition to the 21st Century Binge. Episode 14 - "Deconstructed DNA for Dinner" with Dr. Lauren Crossland-Marr (A CRISPER Bite)
No matter how you slice it, taste is subjective. Afterall, some of you probably argue that kombucha doesn't have the same flavor profile as horse piss. But one undeniable truth that food anthropologist Dr. Lauren Crossland-Marr genereously serves up is that there some pretty wild things going on with what we eat. Dr. Lauren Crossland-Marr is a cultural anthropologist, who currently teaches at the University of Delaware. She previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher with GEAP-3, a network of social scientists exploring the application of the gene-editing technology CRISPR to agriculture and foodways. As part of the project, she wrote, hosted, and researched the podcast A CRISPR Bite. The use of technology in food was also the focus of her dissertation research project.
