Cecily Holland : Firestarter

Cecily Holland

With the help of her adorable Mother, Cecily had the strength to hold onto her seat as the middle child in an Irish family of 13, eleven girls and two boys. She was a fantastic street fighter on Manchester’s tough council estates, something that stood her in good stead for when she lived as an ’out’ lesbian in the 1970’s . This was a rare sight at a very homophobic time. Despite or as well as her neurodiversity , Cecily has written and performed her unique style of poetry and has written several books and screenplays. In 2009 Cecily was diagnosed with a progressive form of multiple sclerosis, but even this hasn’t stopped her from shouting her mouth off!! Cecily started writing when she was in her twenties focusing mostly on journals and poetry. Writing soothed her troubled mind, exasperated by living as an ”out” working class lesbian in a middle class, homophobic society. In 2007 Cecily began performing poetry on local radio and on stage. She has written several TV and film scripts, two of which have been filmed by local filmmakers. She has also published an autobiography. read less
