Our Editor's Take

The World podcast brings international news stories to US audiences every weekday. It is a long-running public radio program focused on global news. It started in 1996 as a response to mainstream media's lack of international news. Since then, it has remained a key source of information for listeners across the US. GBH and PRX partner on the podcast, combining independent storytelling with inclusive programming. Listeners may also know PRX for delivering shows such as This American Life.

The host is prized journalist Marco Werman, who broadcasts the series from Boston. His extensive experience includes producing for the BBC World Service and cofounding a public radio station in New York. Marco is passionate about The World's mission to help listeners engage with global news.

Part of The World's focus is to provide reports from individuals at the center of each story. They talk to protestors, refugees, scientists, and diplomats. When people vote in elections in Turkey, listeners hear from voters in the city of Istanbul. One voter chooses to remain anonymous as she has voted against her family's choice. Another voter talks about their fear for Turkey should the vote not go well. Individual accounts combine with factual updates from reporters to create well-rounded stories.

One update talks about Title 42, which originated during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's an immigration law that impacts the Mexico-United States border. When the ruling nears its end, the podcast explains the potential impact. Throughout the podcast, the people most affected are the real storytellers. So, The World reporters interview people at the border to discuss what it means for them. One talks about feelings of insecurity and shares stories of abuse.

Spain, Ireland and Norway say they will recognize a Palestinian state on May 28. They will join 139 countries who have already taken the step. And, the Aral Sea, which spans the borders of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, used to be the fourth largest lake on the planet but changed under Soviet policies. Investigators in Britain have recently released an explosive report detailing how more than 30,000 UK residents contracted HIV or hepatitis from tainted blood products in the 1970s and 1980s.
