Tavern Tales Junior is a curated, live-play Dungeons & Dragons podcast created by and for kids in 2017. As the players got older, it became a show for kids and adults. Host Kyle Gould is the dungeon master for a team that follows a modified fifth edition (5e) rule set. He's an actor, award-winning musical director, and host of Tavern Tales for adults. This junior version began as a monthly episode on his adult show. Now, it has its own platform. Kyle starts each episode with a description of the setting and events. Then, the kids' characters guide the story in their own directions. Some players are Kyle's children, making the interactions even more entertaining.
In season one of Tavern Tales Junior, the players are knights of The Lord's Own. This faction protects the city of Fairhaven. Savannah plays DJ, a Dragonborn fighter who becomes a champion. DJ is the adopted daughter of a malevolent, ancient dragon, which is a secret. Wil plays the Eldritch Knight, Flash "Fla" Goldendragon. He is a human with a sentimental story and a sword with unusual capabilities. Alex plays K'ryc Tuf'r, a Dark Elf and a thief who must learn about honor. Robin plays Sasha, a Divination Wizard Tabaxi who becomes a feisty leader. Kyle plays Georgington, the voice of reason. Other fun characters appear as well.
In season three of Tavern Tales Junior, the players are Mystical Middlemen. In one episode, Kyle describes the celebratory yet ominous setting. The characters are attending the Fairview Fall Festival Fabulous Flying Broom Race. Kyle tells listeners to close their eyes and imagine a fall day. The air feels humid, and there are heavy gray clouds overhead. Festival-goers fill the streets. Vendors hand out free candy corn, caramels, and popcorn garlands. Some characters sip spiced squash cider from stone cups. They notice large hoops wrapped in ribbons lifting into the sky, but they can't tell how.
