22. Improve Your Gut, Improve Your Thyroid: How Gut Health Impacts Hypothyroidism
Bloating, stomach pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and acid reflux were a part of my long list of symptoms that I experienced for years before my Hashimoto’s diagnosis. We often view digestive symptoms as annoying and uncomfortable and even inevitable, but they’re also very important clues to what’s going on with our health.   I began digging into the research and learned about the three-legged stool of autoimmunity, a concept that shows that all autoimmune conditions, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, consist of three “legs”: A genetic predisposition Exposure to a trigger like stress, trauma, toxins, etc. Intestinal permeability aka, leaky gut syndromeAnd that’s what we’re going to get into today. In this episode, that’s what we’re talking about… leaky gut and hypothyroidism. We’re chatting through what leaky gut is, how to know if you have leaky gut syndrome, and how to begin working on healing. Because when you work on healing your gut, you see improvements in many other aspects of health, including hypothyroidism and many of the symptoms that go along with it. 21. It’s All Connected-- Reduce Hypothyroid Symptoms by Supporting The Rest of your Body
Our thyroid hormone levels are dependent on more than just what is happening in the thyroid. They’re impacted by what’s happening in our adrenal system. They’re impacted by how efficient our liver function is. Thyroid hormones are impacted by what's happening in our gut and by the overall inflammation levels in our body.  In this episode, that’s what we’re talking about… and today this is a special episode because what you’ll hear today is one of the lessons that lives inside my brand new self-paced course, Supporting Your Thyroid Naturally. I just released this course this week after working on building it for many many months…. but honestly, Supporting Your Thyroid Naturally is over 10 years in the making… it's packed with over 7 hours of video content and more than 80 pages of printable resources all within 5 modules and 19 lessons. In the course, I walk you through how to use simple, sustainable lifestyle shifts and smart supplementation to support your thyroid hormones naturally, plus I offer tons of resources for making those lifestyle shifts easy… so they stick. SO that’s what I’m sharing on the podcast today– a lesson called “It's All Connected”.... it's a quick overview of how everything is connected that lives at the beginning of the course before we dive deeper into all of the body systems I mention here in each of the subsequent modules.  Glad you're here, Sarah 🙋‍♀️ Let’s Connect: Website: http://sarahgeissinger.com/podcast Instagram: @‌natural.thyroid.fix Email: hello@sarahgeissinger.com   🗒️ Resources Mentioned In This Episode: NOW AVAILABLE-- Supporting Your Thyroid Naturally Course: Check out the course! 20. Self -care strategies to support your adrenals in stressful seasons
Self-care is important all the time, especially for those of us with autoimmune disease, but it can take on a whole new meaning when you’re heading into what you know will be a stressful season. Perhaps you’re working on healing your adrenals, or maybe you just want to really be proactive about NOT landing yourself in adrenal dysfunction. And, if you’re someone who is dealing with hypothyroidism, then there’s a 90% chance that you also have some level of adrenal dysfunction.... so you're wise to be concerned!   When our adrenals aren’t functioning properly then our stress response isn’t firing correctly,... we’ve got cortisol spikes at the wrong time and a number of physical symptoms that show up. PLUS- that messed up stress response actually impacts our thyroid hormones, as what's happening in the adrenals is tightly connected to our thyroid.   In this episode, we’re talking about adrenal dysfunction and self-care. We’ll get into what adrenal dysfunction is and how it's connected to thyroid health. We'll talk through some of the most impactful things that you can do to support your adrenals when you're in a stressful season of life, as well as resolve adrenal dysfunction through self-care and nourishing your body….and of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. 19. Why balancing your blood sugar can support thyroid healing... and how to do it!

19. Why balancing your blood sugar can support thyroid healing... and how to do it!
I often get asked what the TOP thing is that people with thyroid issues can do to start feeling better…. My answer is always, “There are two! Go gluten-free and balance your blood sugar levels!” Rewind 15 years when I was really deep in struggling with thyroid problems, I wasn’t aware that I had blood sugar issues when I was first diagnosed…. even though I would always say that I had a sweet tooth. However, I would get “hangry” (hungry + angry) multiple times per day, as the high carbohydrate foods I had consumed were causing huge blood sugar swings. I always had a snack in my bag and ascribed to the idea that I should just eat small amounts all day long. What I didn’t know was that these hangry feelings were actually blood sugar swings that were also weakening my adrenals and causing a spike in my thyroid antibodies. Balancing blood sugar levels should be one of the top priorities for anyone with hypothyroid symptoms and who is hoping to overcome autoimmune thyroiditis… and, actually, adrenal fatigue as well.  In this episode, we’re digging into the topic of blood sugar and blood sugar balancing….we’ll talk about what it is, why it matters, and how it impacts our thyroid health. Additionally, I’ll share some strategies that you can use to control blood sugar levels without using medications….. of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. 18. Benefits of Infrared Sauna for Hypothyroidism
Sweating is one of the best ways to get rid of toxins.  I know- it's not sexy… there’s no cleanse or intensive detox retreat or chelation or anything crazy.  I believe in creating routines and habits that support gentle, daily detox over those more intense detoxification programs.  So SWEATING is key to that process. (and in case you were wondering… peeing and pooping are also on the top of my list for detoxing– all very sexy!) In fact, certain toxins, like cadmium and nickel, will be more concentrated in our sweat than in our urine. You can increase your sweating through numerous ways, such as exercise, hot yoga, and hot baths. I actually like doing all of the above, but saunas tend to carry additional health benefits not found in the other therapies. In this episode, we’re talking specifically about the benefits of sauna use for people who have hypothyroidism .and of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. So, grab that notebook and pen and let's get started with today’s episode. 17. Are Electrolyte Imbalances Giving You Hypothyroid Symptoms?

17. Are Electrolyte Imbalances Giving You Hypothyroid Symptoms?
I am all about grabbing the low-hanging fruit to move towards feeling good. The easy, hardly-have-to-think-about-it, things you're already doing and can just tweak sort of low-hanging fruit to start feeling better quickly.... and today's episode is one of those things.  Now, hydration may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to Hashimoto’s and thyroid health– actually, it probably is not the first thing you think to address with any health condition BUT having adequate levels of water is absolutely essential for all areas of health — and electrolytes play a crucial role in ensuring we stay hydrated. In fact, the research shows that people with certain health concerns — including thyroid conditions and adrenal dysfunction — may be more prone to dehydration caused by electrolyte imbalance, and may be more intensely affected by symptoms.  In this episode, we’re talking specifically about electrolytes.... What they do in the body, how they support our hydration levels, and how they impact our hormone health and adrenal health. And of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. 16. The Safety Theory- How to Signal To Your Body to Promote Thyroid Healing
Everything that we do, eat, experience, feel, and think– they’re all messages that we send to our bodies. And these messages often have physiological responses.  The messages we send create physical responses in our body– either in the direction of health or disease.  In this episode, we’re focusing on a newer theory as to why women deal with thyroid issues more than men and talking about a key part of that theory– how the signals that we send to our body can impact our actual, physical health and of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. 15. Why Do Thyroid Issues Impact Women More than Men?

15. Why Do Thyroid Issues Impact Women More than Men?
The American Thyroid Association estimates that five to eight women are affected with Hashimoto’s for every one man. The ATA also estimates that one in eight women will be affected with Hashimoto’s or another thyroid disorder at some point in their lives. So, if you’re a woman, and you probably are if you're listening to this podcast… and you’re not CURRENTLY dealing with thyroid issues… then there’s a good chance that you will be dealing with a thyroid issue. Which also means that it's a good time to start making some shifts to have that NOT be the case.  But the bigger question is WHY?! Why does it seem like we all know a woman (or we are that woman) who has thyroid issues? In this episode, we’re talking about some of the reasons (or, more aptly put- theories) why women deal with thyroid disease at a much higher rate than men… and of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today..  to work towards reducing that statistic. 14. Food Sensitivities and Hypothyroidism: What You Eat Impacts How You Feel
While learning about the holistic approaches to healing, the biggest factor I discovered to promote healing was FOOD. And it makes so much sense… we’re eating all the time. Multiple times a day… every day of the year. If we’re eating things that aren’t working for our body, then day in and day out we’re constantly causing our bodies to have to react and respond. If we’re eating foods that work for us, then food has the power to nourish and heal. In this episode, we’re talking all about food sensitivities and hypothyroidism… what some common food sensitivities are, how to figure out what foods may be giving you issues and of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. 13. What Is a Hashimoto’s/ Hypothyroid Flare and How to Handle One Naturally
There is maybe nothing worse than getting your hypothyroid symptoms under control and feeling good for a while and then WHAM– your symptoms come back and leave you tired, fried, and with your hair falling out.  Maybe it comes after a vacation of throwing all your dietary changes out the window or after an especially stressful season. Maybe it comes after a stretch of sleepless nights and grabbing some sugary snacks to make it through the day. There are lots of reasons for what we call a “flare-up”, but it doesn’t change how frustrating it can be when it happens In this episode, we’re talking Hashimoto’s flares… hypothyroid flares… which can pop up when you’re going along working on healing, and then BAM your symptoms flare up again and of course, I have a few simple shifts that you can do to start making an impact in this area today. You’ve probably heard mention of this hormone before, but we’re going to be talking about your best hormonal FRENEMY… cortisol.  Cortisol is a super important hormone– critical to life, to keeping us safe and alive, giving us the ability to get out of bed in the morning and some strong signals that it's time to go to sleep at night. 06. The Gluten- Hypothyroid Connection: Is A Gluten-Free Diet Right for You? Thyroid Gluten Free Diet
Gluten-free diet. (insert dread-filled music here...) I mean, honestly, any major dietary shift and any sort of food sensitivity is a thing, right? It's a disruption- it requires rethinking and planning and workarounds and everything. A quick Google search will reveal that gluten sensitivity is on the rise, and it's true- there is a STRONG correlation between Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, even if not diagnosed.
