Our Editor's Take

The Rest Is Politics is a podcast about current affairs in the UK and around the world. The hosts of the podcast, Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart, have had long and distinguished political careers. Campbell was a member of Tony Blair's Labour leadership. He was also the director of communications for the Labour Party as well as a freelance advisor for campaigns across Europe. Stewart was a member of parliament. Then, he was a minister in various capacities under David Cameron and Theresa May. He resigned from the cabinet when Boris Johnson became prime minister.

In their political careers, Campbell and Stewart represented opposite perspectives. Their collective breadth of political and professional experience is considerable. For The Rest Is Politics, the two men come together to talk about current events. In their podcast conversations, they seek to revive the art of "disagreeing agreeably."

Three times a week, The Rest Is Politics podcast talks about what's been happening in the world. Putin's invasion of Ukraine gets a lot of attention. Macron's visit to China gets a mention. The podcast cohosts discuss the rise of communism in Austria. They also like to ask big questions. Should corporations engage in political activism? What is the role of name-calling in strongman politics? What makes a speech impactful?

The hosts of The Rest Is Politics also spend a lot of time discussing domestic affairs. They analyze the impact of Dominic Raab's resignation as Deputy Prime Minister. They examine the increasing role of leaks to the press in British politics.

Listeners may also appreciate the impromptu civics lessons in the podcast. Rory Stewart clarifies the role of the Privy Council in the British government. The cohosts demystify the rivalry between politicians and civil servants. They explain various traditions around the coronation of King Charles.

The Rest Is Politics explores civility and excellent news coverage. Listeners may expect a high-quality and enlightening show. Fans of this podcast may like Leading. That is the other podcast that Campbell and Stewart host.
