Our Editor's Take

Controversy has always proved to be a strong selling point. True crime remains one of the most popular types of podcasts. Infamous is a podcast that manages to combine these two things in an entertaining way. It examines stories that listeners might be familiar with but provides additional facts that were not reported at the time.

Vanessa Grigoriadis and Gabriel Sherman host the Infamous podcast. They are both experienced journalists. Grigoriadis writes for The New York Times Magazine and Vanity Fair. One of her articles, "Power Girls," was later adapted for television by MTV. In 2007, she won the National Magazine Award for her profile of Karl Lagerfeld.

Podcast cohost Sherman is an author and writer who has worked for the New York Observer and New York Magazine. He is also a special correspondent for Vanity Fair. In 2014, he wrote The Loudest Voice in the Room, a non-fiction book about Fox News founder Roger Ailes. In 2019, that book would serve as the source material for The Loudest Voice, an HBO miniseries. Russell Crowe would play the lead role of Roger Ailes in that series.

Grigoriadis and Sherman use their experience to excellent effect on Infamous. The two experienced journalists don't only examine the reporting of these scandals. More often than not, they're interested in why the stories were undertaken in the first place.

Infamous shows interest in how journalism can hold the powerful accountable. Both Grigoriadis and Sherman are passionate about this topic. It led them to create the podcast in the first place.

Several of these stories will likely be familiar to true crime aficionados. The NXIVM case and the Juggalos are two of the many subjects that receive attention. Others may be new to them, such as about C. Wonder. New episodes of Infamous premiere on Thursdays.
