Our Editor's Take

Fear: Horror Stories is an audio fiction podcast. The host of the show is actor Pun Bandhu. Horror is a popular and enduring genre. The successes of Five Nights at Freddy's and the Scream franchise are testaments to horror's rising popularity. It makes sense that fiction podcasts would follow the same trend. The audio format lends itself to the genre, as nothing is scarier than one's imagination.

Fear: Horror Stories is a collection of thrillers by new and emerging horror writers. The performers are professional voice actors. The sound production is rich and layered. As a result, the listener's imagination can be free to roam as they listen to the gripping tales.

Every podcast season tells a different story and uses a different cast. In "Roanoke Falls," young Agnes is a member of the Roanoke settlement. After a mysterious disappearance, Agnes finds herself under suspicion of witchcraft. The tale combines Puritanism and the gloomy woods to create a claustrophobic atmosphere. "Beatrix Greene" tells of the demise of a spiritual medium in the Victorian era. In a séance, she meets a ghost who wants something from her.

Some tales in Fear take place in the here and now. "Black Friday" is about an enthusiastic retail worker and his jaded supervisor. As they prepare the store for the biggest shopping day of the year, things get strange at Mart Club. "Black Friday" combines horror with comedy in a critique of mindless consumerism.

Listeners may recognize some collaborators in Fear. Rachel Hawkins is a bestselling author of paranormal romance thrillers. Christopher Golden is best known for novels like Ararat and Road of Bones. Fred Armisen is a comedian who has appeared on Saturday Night Live and Portlandia.

Fear: Horror Stories is a great collection of tales for lovers of thrills. The flawless quality of the writing, acting, and production can make it a real pleasure to listen to.
