It's a mash-up week where we visit the second half of Exodus and the last section of Matthew and begin to uncover the similarities between the Exodus, the Tabernacle, the Golden Calf, and stories in the Matthew like the Sheep and the Goat, the Parable of the Talents, and the Resurrection of Jesus. We add a thick layer of pastoral wisdom to the questions and answers we bring to the Scripture this week. We fly through Leviticus in this week of reading, so we are here to help you unpack it. What does it all mean and why does it matter to us? We are still in the wilderness of Numbers. We close out two books of the Bible this week with Numbers and Mark, but there's a lot of good ground to cover.  We talk about the way we can meditate on Scripture, the call on our lives to be present, succession plans, and how to live and leave a legacy as a people faithful to God. We mix things up this week and meet up with Jesus in the introduction to Luke. We tether this strongly to the Old Testament, especially our Deuteronomy readings from this week. It's the end of the Torah at the end of Deuteronomy, so we finish up the laws Moses is giving. These laws seem like harsh laws to us, but we talk about how we can interpret those laws and better understand and meditate on them for our own context. We speak about the power of giving and what first fruits mean for us. We go down to the depths of the Judges when everyone gets to decide what is best and consider what that time means for us today. We sort through the judges as we can, but we find that deeper and deeper this tragedy is a warning for us. Ultimately, we are trying to hear where Jesus calls us to take care of our selves, body, mind, and soul, and how to grow closer to him. Today is a quick tour through 2 Samuel. King David has taken the throne and we see the rise and slow fade of David along with some scandalous stories. At the heart of all this is the promise God made to David for a dynasty to come. We explore this and even down to the structure of the book regarding authors and compilers. Then we move into John to find a vastly different gospel than the other three. Today is a quick venture through 1 Kings. We catch up with the end of King David and we see the rise and fall of Solomon along with some future kings that cause some issues. In the midst of these kings, we see Elijah who begins to show us shadows of the Anointed One who is coming through miracles of abundance and resurrection. Then we move into John to see how the 1 Kings readings can inform our Gospel context as well as begin to notice the end is coming for Jesus in John. We have made it through 2 Kings and most of the history of Israel and Judah. We see the repeated sins of Jeroboam as well as the end of Elijah and stories about Elisha. These stories of the prophets help us see forward into the stories of Jesus in John. We spend some good time talking about the relevance of the church. We are beginning 1 Chronicles, so we reframe how we are looking at the history of Israel and the importance of this book. We look at the power of nostalgia and the way it can shape our past.
