Leah Hidalgo, RD, LDN is a Washington D.C. based Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, who seamlessly transitioned from a successful nursing career to her current role. With a distinctive background that integrates healthcare and nutrition, she has successfully led community-based health initiatives both locally and internationally, collaborating on school nutrition programs to instill healthy eating habits in children and educating women on nutrition and food safety in South American communities. For the past two years, Leah has been at the forefront of oncology nutrition in the nation’s capital, providing vital nutrition support to low-income communities facing challenges with nutrition management and food insecurity. Collaborating with social workers, Leah ensures individuals receive life-sustaining nutrition, including oral nutritional supplements, who either cannot afford them or lack insurance coverage, through grant funded programs.  She also orchestrates a grocery program to provide access to healthy foods for individuals undergoing treatment and facing financial constraints. This epsiode is hosted by Christina M. Andrea Adler, RD, CSPCC, LD, is a board certified specialist in pediatric critical care nutrition and has worked as a Pediatric Dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for over 19 years.  She’s worked with the neonatal population since 2004 and, about 10 years ago, expanded her practice to include pediatric patients with intestinal failure, liver failure and organ transplantation.  She currently volunteers as RD Co-Chair of the Pediatric Intestinal Failure Work Group Subcommittee of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and was Andrea recently received the Recognized Neonatal Dietitian award from Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  When she is not working, she enjoys spending her time at her daughter’s swim meets or her son’s wrestling matches and enjoys riding with her virtual friends on her “bike that goes nowhere”.  This episode was hosted by Christina M. Travis Masterson, Ph.D., is the Director of the Health, Ingestive Behavior, and Technology Laboratory and the Broadhurst Career Development Professor for the Study of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at The Pennsylvania State University. He earned his bachelor of science degree in exercise and wellness at Brigham Young University, followed by a master of science degree in health promotion also at Brigham Young University and doctoral degree in nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University where he also served as a USDA Childhood Obesity Prevention Fellow. Dr. Masterson is the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, and his research focuses primarily on food cue reactivity and how our food environment shapes our food choices and eating behaviors. He uses a variety of novel technologies and methodologies to accomplish this goal, including Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), immersive virtual reality (VR), and ecological momentary assessment (EMA), a method of research which studies people’s thoughts and behaviors in their daily lives.   This episode is hosted by Christina M. This episode of the DNS Podcast features Misti Staley, owner of Staley House, creator of the FreeArm, an innovative feeding holder designed to assist with the delivery of enteral nutrition.  Misti’s son Freeman Ellis Staley was born in 2015 with heart and lung complications. 3.5 months were spent in the Little Rock Arkansas Children’s Hospital NICU, home for 5 weeks, and then back in the PICU for another 5 months before Freeman sadly lost his battle with pulmonary hypertension at 10 months old. After Freeman’s passing, Misti devoted a full year of her time to Freeman Foundation, raising $250K to build a state-of-the-art, ADA accessible playground in downtown Helena, Arkansas. Misti continues to manage Freeman Foundation while also working as CEO of Staley House, creator of the FreeArm.  The FreeArm and Freeman Playground give Freeman’s short life larger meaning, and Misti is honored to continue to spread Freeman’s legacy of love through her work. Erica Howes, PhD, MPH, RDN, is a postdoctoral associate at Virginia Tech in the department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. She received her PhD in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise from Virginia Tech, where her dissertation research focused on weight bias and dietary assessment. She holds an MS in Nutrition and an MPH with a concentration in Health Promotion and Health Behavior, both from Oregon State University. Erica is a registered dietitian nutritionist with clinical experience counseling patients with eating disorders in structured treatment settings and at the outpatient level. She has also been involved in teaching undergraduate nutrition courses and enjoys working with dietetics students. Dr. Charlene Compher, PhD, RD, LDN, FADA, FASPEN, is a Professor of Nutrition Science at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and Advanced Practice Clinical Dietitian Specialist with the Clinical Nutrition Support Service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she works with the home parenteral nutrition team and dietetics research. Dr. Laura Matarese, PhD, RDN, LDN, FADA, FASPEN, FAND is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Department of Internal Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. She has over 40 years of experience in nutrition support and gastrointestinal nutrition, and is the author of numerous manuscripts, abstracts, chapters and books, including the new second edition of The Health Professionals Guide to Gastrointestinal Nutrition.  Dr. Matarese currently serves on the editorial boards of several journals, has lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally, and has held numerous positions within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.  She is the past president of the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification and currently serves as a Councillor for the Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition section of the American Gastroenterological Association and on the Board of Advisors of the Oley Foundation.  She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards and, prior to joining East Carolina University, held positions at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, and the Starzl Transplant Institute at the University of Pittsburgh. Jennifer Bryant, MS, RD, CSO, LD, CNSC, is a registered dietitian, licensed nutritionist, nutrition support clinician, and board certified specialist in oncology nutrition.  She works alongside Alison caring for home infusion as well as holds adjunct faculty positions at Southern Maine Community College, The University of Southern Maine, and The University of New England where she has taught nutrition for the last 14 years. Annalynn Skipper, Ph.D., R.D., FADA is a Registered Dietitian with MS and PhD degrees in nutrition.  She has more than 25 years’ experience in critical care nutrition and has served in administrative and academic roles leading a multi-disciplinary nutrition support team and serving as Associate Professor and internship director.  Dr. Skipper has served on two licensure taskforces in Illinois, and in many leadership positions for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics including Clinical Nutrition Delegate and Chair of the Commission on Dietetic Registration.  She also served as Chair of the Academy’s taskforce to revise the Model Practice Act for the Consumer Protection and Licensure Subcommittee and as a member of the Academy’s PAC.  She has worked on dietetic licensure in three states and drafted the current revision of the Illinois licensure law.     This episode is hosted by Christina M. Dr. Paul Wischmeyer, MD, EDIC, FCCM, FASPEN is a board certified anesthesiologist and Professor with Tenure at Duke University School of Medicine, currently serving as Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Anesthesiology and Director of the Nutrition Team at Duke Hospital. His research interests include surgical and critical care nutrition and exercise rehabilitation therapy, parenteral nutrition and personalized nutrition trials, perioperative optimization, post-illness muscle mass and functional recovery, and role of probiotics/microbiome in illness, specifically COVID-19 prevention and treatment. Dr. Wischmeyer has received significant funding from the National Institutes of Health and US Department of Defense as well as numerous awards for his work from national and international societies, including the Jeffrey Silverstein Award and Memorial Lecture for Humanism in Medicine from the American Delirium Society, Fellow of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM), the John M. Kinney Award for the most significant contribution to the field of general nutrition, and the Stanley Dudrick Research Scholar Award provided by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition where he is also recognized as an honorary Fellow. He has over 200 publications in nutrition, critical care, and perioperative care, including publications in New England Journal of Medicine. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international medical meetings, delivering over 1,000 invited presentations in his career and is an advocate and lecturer for improving the patient experience and teaching providers to keep CARE as the focus of healthcare.
