302 The Big Boy Buck - An Ohio Poaching Case
Sep 24 2023
302 The Big Boy Buck - An Ohio Poaching Case
We've partnered with Wayne Saunders from the Warden's Watch podcast to delve into a gripping story that serves as a cautionary tale for hunters and conservationists alike. Ohio is a prime destination for white-tailed deer hunters, but unfortunately, it also attracts poachers. We'll explore the story of "Big Boy," a trophy buck that captured the attention of ethical hunters and law enforcement officers, only to fall victim to poaching. Ohio as a Hunting Destination: Why Ohio is a hotspot for white-tailed deer hunting and, regrettably, also for poaching. The Ethical Hunters: Ian Obenshain and Brad Bailey spot Big Boy in the summer of 2009 and plan to hunt it ethically in the fall.Officer Gilkey's Involvement: The hunters specifically wanted Officer Gilkey to be involved in overseeing the hunting area. The Disappearance: Big Boy vanishes from trail cameras just before the hunting season begins. The Expo Revelation: Months later, Big Boy is displayed at an expo, claimed to be a Kentucky state record by a poacher. The Confession: The poacher sticks to his story but eventually confesses, hoping to avoid prison time.Legal Consequences: The poacher, with thirteen prior hunting convictions, faces a lifetime hunting ban and a $23,572.05 fine under Ohio's Trophy Restitution Law.Recognition for Officer Gilkey: He receives the Ohio Bow Hunter Officer of the Year award for solving this case.Role of Ethical Hunters: The hunters who initially spotted and documented Big Boy also deserve recognition for their ethical approach.Reporting Wildlife Crime: The importance of reporting wildlife crimes through platforms like wildlifecrimestoppers.org.The Emotional Toll: The loss of Big Boy was hard for the ethical hunters, but the case also brought them closer as friends.Law Enforcement's Approach: The seriousness with which the case was handled is a testament to the importance of wildlife conservation.   The tale of Big Boy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by ethical hunters and the importance of wildlife conservation. While the story had a bittersweet ending, it also showcased the dedication of law enforcement officers like Officer Gilkey and the role of ethical hunters in preserving the integrity of the sport. The case also highlights the importance of reporting wildlife crimes, which can be done across all 50 states and Canada through wildlifecrimestoppers.org. Let's all take a moment to appreciate the efforts of those who strive to keep our forests and wildlife safe.

Ted uses a sling or harness to maneuver from tree to tree based on when and where he's finding active big buck sign. Ted is also an archer and seems to prefer this over anything. Something has "clicked" for Ted and says that he just seems to be in tune with finding hunting opportunity and capitalizing on those more than he's ever done before. 293 Christian Williams - Bow Shot Biomechanics and Archery Strong
When an athletic event involves repetitive motion in order to achieve success, it's important to understand the biomechanics of that movement.  The golf swing, pitching a baseball, and the archery shot are good examples.  Christian Williams, an exercise science specialist, and avid bowhunter, breaks down the mechanics of the bow shot, how to improve strength and endurance, which muscles are important, and injury prevention. And of course, we talk a bunch about how it all relates to bowhunting. 292 The Deer News 2019 Year in Review - A Time Capsule
As we open up 2020, our 8th Season, and 8 years of podcasting here at the Big Buck Registry, we thought it only appropriate to take one last look at 2019.  If you are a frequent listener of the show, you'll know that in each episode we segment off into the Deer News at the beginning and a good deer hunting story at the end. In the last show of 2019, we put together all the best deer stories told by our guests of 2019, and likewise, we thought we'd take a look at all the best deer news stories of 2019 as well, like a time capsule of events.  We visit with Jim Keller, our news anchor, and with some frequent news story contributors, Tim Donze, Jon Guice, and Dan Appelbaum.  And then, through some consolidation of all the news we featured on the show in 2019, we present a deer news year in review, with all the best deer news stories feature on the podcast in 2019.  For Exclusive Content Visit Us Here: BBR Extras OUR SPONSORS:  Minus 33 Merino Wool,  Covert Scouting Cameras, Grizzly Ears, Rackology, BIG BUCK MERCH   DISCOUNT CODES: Minus 33 10% OFF: BIGBUCK33 Here are the Stories from 2019: Bedford County Man Considered Oldest Deer Hunter at 105Disabled 8 Year Old Hunter Has Special Stand StolenFemale Poacher Caught by Game Warden on Dating AppHunters Seek Permission to Hunt Deer in Jamaica 101 Year Old Grandma Kills 2 Year with 1 ShotWyoming Man Charged for Poaching 114 Deer and AntelopePennsylvania's Sunday Hunting Bill 147Crossbow Proposal Causes Stir with Maine Deer HuntersCalifornia Looks to Enroll Hunters in Conservation PushDeadly Zombie Deer Disease Could Spread to HumansTinder Bans Woman Over Hunter PhotosBill Would Allow Land Owners to Sell Permits to Out of State HuntersFormer Stuebenville Ohio Officer Sentenced for PoachingNew Study Shows Deer Species React Differently to WolvesRoad Commission Asks Whomever Is Leaving Deer Bait on Highway to StopColorado Parks and Wildlife Crack Down on Illegal Antler CollectingOpening Day Change Is Official for Pennsylvania Deer HuntersMan Fatally Attacked by a Pet DeerProposal Would Prohibit Shooting Bucks in Buffalo County WisconsinMan Poaches then Freezes 20 Point BuckAlabama Law Makers Approve Hunting Deer With BaitWhat Deer Hunters Should Know about the EPA Review of GlyphosateSecretary Bernhardt Proposes Greater Access for Hunting and FishingRare Pitch Black Deer Spotted in MichiganAre You Putting Yourself at Risk for Lyme DiseaseColorado Rehab Center Running Out of Room for Rescued FawnsIowa City Turns to Bow Hunters to Manage Deer HerdColorado Man Receives Lifetime Ban on Hunting and FishingLimited Deer Feeding Allowed in Delta FloodDeer Hit by Planes at NJ AirportsMDC and Missouri Increase Penalties for PoachingDNR Considering Beach Going Deer TranquilizerNo Deer Season in Part of Mississippi? 291 Best Deer Hunting Stories 2019 BBR Deer Hunt - Part II
Welcome to the Big Buck Registry's Best Deer Hunting stories of 2019.  On almost every show we ask each guest to share a memorable deer story that's meaningful to them.  At the heart of the Big Buck Registry are the stories of the men and women across the world, from all walks of life, that share a common bond in hunting.  We've always felt that the story was just as important as the rest of the show because it brings everything together.  If the rest of the show is the text book, the story is the example. The story brings the hunt to life. So we decided to go back through each show and put together a compilation of the deer stories told throughout the year and share them collectively.  We'll hear from Jeff Johnston, Scott and Seth Perkins, Richard Cook, Anthony Stallone, Harmon Carson, Allison Rauscher, and Phil Vanderpool. This is part two and our last episode of 2019. Cheers to a healthy, prosperous, and successful 2020. 290 Jeff Johnston - Trophy Scan Breaking the Mold
Every now and then a new technology comes along that solves a problem that we didn't know we had.  In this case, it's about scoring a trophy animal to within 1/1000 of an inch specificity.  In a computer aided model, you can now remove all human error and get ridiculous precision with the help of Trophy Scan.  Think of it like instant replay meets deer hunting. We sit down with Jeff Johnston to learn about everything Trophy Scan can do for the hunter while looking to preserve a memory and celebrate an animal beyond the traditional taxidermy mount.
