Our Editor's Take

Eat Your Crust is a peculiar name for a podcast-but according to host Crystal Jiao, it has a double meaning. First, Crystal wanted the show to be a place for her and her friends to speak about anything and everything. That included the crust-the things the people usually avoid bringing up. Second, Crust was also Crystal's high school nickname-so it was an inside joke for people that knew her.

While the podcast was Crystal's idea, she shares the lead with Jeesoo Kim. The two met in college at UC San Diego. Because they had so much in common, they became immediate friends. They are both Asian-American Gen Z women who minored in computer science. Crystal is now a graphic and visual designer at a tech company. Jeesoo is an analyst in the beauty industry. They both share the fears and excitement of graduating and starting "real life." That is what the podcast is about, everything that comes with being an adult. But it's from a unique perspective of being Asian-American on top of that.

In each podcast episode, the pair hosts a different person from their friend group. The guest shares their story and experience of easing into society after school. The hope is that the listeners can relate, feel they are not alone, and learn some tools on how to handle life as it comes. For instance, one guest reveals their journey of moving to a new state without knowing anyone. They talk about their anxieties, how they made new friends and managed to stay positive. In another episode, the hosts talk about diversity in the workplace. They discuss how important it is to have coworkers that look like them. Hosts share how it can be demoralizing when that's not the case.

Eat Your Crust offers honest and vulnerable conversations. For the listeners who are not of Asian descent, it can help them understand the culture and struggles better. For those who share the hosts' heritage, it's a place to find camaraderie. New episodes premiere weekly.
