Our Editor's Take

The AA Grapevine's Podcast is a support guide for recovery from alcoholism. Hosts Don and Sam refer to it as "a meeting after the meeting." By "meeting," these two hosts mean joining an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group. The AA community helps support one another to recover from alcohol addiction.

AA members Don and Sam are recovering alcoholics. As well as sharing their stories, they interview AA members about their experiences on the podcast. It's relatable, inspiring, and often funny, as everyone talks honestly and empathically.

Podcast host Don was a "pure drunk" until he joined AA in 1994. Four years before, a doctor advised him to stop, and he had ignored him. Since his first AA meeting, Don has been sober but admits that it hasn't always been easy. Sam's journey isn't quite as succinct. His first AA meeting was in 1989, and he joined again in 2002. In 2012, he forced himself to reset his sobriety date again. He realized that his addiction to diet pills didn't equate to being sober.

Don, Sam, and fellow AA members share stories in weekly podcast episodes. In "Bottle to Throttle," Dee and Niquie share the tactics they used to hide their drinking. Niquie mentions not always needing to attend a meeting for herself. Sometimes, it's important to communicate something to help somebody else. As her sessions are online, she admits that she doesn't always have to get out of bed to attend. They also discuss the challenges of attending drinking events as a sober person.

Another podcast episode discusses "The Problem is Thinking About the Problem." Guest Jake B. reveals what attending meetings in a different country is like. He's an American teaching English in Madrid who sought help while learning Spanish. In the episode, they discuss the importance of communication and being honest.

The AA Grapevine's Podcast provides relatable advice and support. Some AA members talk about paths to spirituality, while others refer to joining AA as a wake-up call. New episodes arrive Mondays, providing stories of hope and resilience to inspire others.
