Mini-Episode #3 - The Key to the MacDonald Murders is Sitting in a Government Evidence Locker, Untested
In our third mini-episode, we discuss a hitherto neglected piece of evidence relating to the MacDonald murders, which a 2018 4th Circuit Court of Appeals decision claimed had been tested. We checked with the US Attorneys in North Carolina: it hasn't been. This piece of evidence remains in the possession of the United States government. Testing it could solve the MacDonald murders, once and for all. Episode 9: Honeycutt & North Lucas
Among the military policemen who arrived at 544 Castle Drive on the morning of the MacDonald murders was Specialist Kenneth Mica. Mica was the MP who first approached a prone Jeffrey MacDonald, who was lying next to his wife, Colette, on the floor of the master bedroom. Mica shook MacDonald awake and then asked him: "What happened here?"MacDonald proceeded to give a description of the intruders who had allegedly broken into the apartment and attacked his family. Among these intruders was a woman in a floppy hat. As it happened, Mica and his partner had, en route to 544 Castle Drive only minutes earlier, driven past a woman in a wide-brimmed hat on the corner of Honeycutt and North Lucas, a half-mile from the MacDonalds' residence. What were the chances? We explore this question and others in Episode 9. Episode 8: The Historical Lens
Feb 28 2023
Episode 8: The Historical Lens
As we concluded in the last episode, legally speaking, Jeffrey MacDonald should not be in prison. One cannot honestly examine the government’s case against MacDonald and maintain that it proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. That simply isn’t true. Having acknowledged that, however, we need also to acknowledge the obvious. In many cases where all but one occupant of a home is murdered, the lone survivor is the murderer –– something the murderer will typically deny. It is a disturbing fact about us humans. The threats that haunt our imaginations come from afar. But the ones that actually materialize often do so under our noses. Many victims of violence are attacked by people they know. Many victims of rape are assaulted by people they know. And many murder victims take their last breath staring at the back, or into the spiteful eyes, of someone they know. The serpent that doomed Eden did not have to breach its walls; it arose from within. So if we knew nothing else about the MacDonald murders, the fact that Jeffrey MacDonald survived them would place him near the top of our list of suspects. Well, what else do we know? Welcome back to The Looking Glass.Season One episodes drop every TuesdayFollow onInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelookingglass_podcast/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/thelookingglasstruecrimepodcastTikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@thelookingglasstruecrimeYouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@thelookingglasstruecrimeEpisode 8 CastNick Weiller as Dennis Eisman – https://www.instagram.com/brosafari/Lily Heller as Pamela Kalin – https://www.instagram.com/lily_of_the_maple_valley/ Randal Dudley as Captain Clifford Somers – https://www.zoominfo.com/p/Randall-Dudley/1676790974 Nancy La Scala as Winnie Caspar – https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0479041/Jay Huguley as Lieutenant Edwin Casper  – https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0401132/Joshua Hensley as Col. Episode 6: At Least Senile

Episode 6: At Least Senile
We spent the last few episodes delving into the Grand Jury proceedings of 1974-75, which terminated in the indictment of Jeffrey MacDonald for the murders of his wife and two daughters five years earlier. More than any other, Joe McGinniss’s account of the Grand Jury, in his 1983 book Fatal Vision, shaped the popular perception of it. But in re-examining MacDonald’s testimony before the Grand Jury, we found reasons to doubt McGinniss’s version of events.  Setting aside, for the moment, the evidence against MacDonald, the Grand Jury documents show us a man at the mercy of a motley parade of dubious psychiatric and forensic experts, all marching to the erratic beat of an unscrupulous government prosecutor named Victor Woerheide. In McGinniss’s telling, MacDonald’s angry declaration that the entire proceeding was “bullshit” was just one more sign of his overweening arrogance and sense of entitlement. In the real world, that one-word description was apt.  But it didn’t matter. In January 1975, the Grand Jury indicted MacDonald. He spent the next few years pursuing his flourishing medical career back in Southern California while his lawyers advanced his appeals in the courts. MacDonald thus breathed a sigh of relief when, in January 1976, while vacationing in Maui with his girlfriend, he learned from his lawyer, Bernie Segal, that the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals had vacated the Grand Jury’s indictment. The indictment had, the court found, violated MacDonald’s right to a speedy trial.  The Justice Department appealed this decision, and the case ultimately landed in the lap of the Supreme Court, which, in May 1978, unanimously overturned the speedy trial finding. Two months earlier, the Court had refused to review MacDonald’s contention that, since a military court had already cleared him back in 1970, putting him before a civilian court would amount to double jeopardy.  His appeals having run out of road, MacDonald was back on the hook. His case was going to trial. Welcome back to The Looking Glass. Episode 5: Mirror Mirror
In Episode 5, we complete our survey of the Grand Jury proceedings of 1974-75. This entails a careful analysis not only of Jeffrey MacDonald's testimony before the Grand Jury but also of Joe McGinniss's framing of that testimony in Fatal Vision. McGinniss tells his readers that government prosecutors masterfully cut through MacDonald's charismatic facade and thereby revealed to the grand jurors "the real Jeffrey MacDonald": a "chronic liar," repressed homosexual, and “homicidal maniac with psychopathic tendencies." Was McGinniss's portrayal of the Grand Jury proceedings accurate? We answer that question and others. Episode 3: Lies
In our first episode, we surveyed the basic facts surrounding the murder of Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald’s family on the Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina. And we heard Jeffrey MacDonald’s own recollection of that terrifying and tragic evening in February 1970. In Episode 2, we considered, and rejected, the claim that MacDonald’s account was too far-fetched to be taken seriously.  Having established the fundamental plausibility of MacDonald’s story, we need next to survey the facts of the case in order to see how well they conform to that story. We can begin by following in the footsteps of the army investigators who originally worked on the case. Episode 2: Kill The Pigs
Jan 16 2023
Episode 2: Kill The Pigs
In Episode 1, we noted a widely held view about the MacDonald murders: namely, that MacDonald’s story is too implausible to be taken seriously. In Episode 2, we ask why. Why does Jeffrey MacDonald’s account of the murders strike so many people as simply not believable? One answer is that these people have a background understanding of another set of murders that happened six months earlier: namely, the Manson murders. And that understanding is that the Manson murders were a singular, unrepeatable, one-of-a-kind occurrence –– not the kind of thing that happens twice in six months, three thousand miles apart.  On this understanding of the Manson murders, the MacDonald murders become self-explanatory. Jeffrey MacDonald clearly killed his own family and then reached for the lowest hanging fruit in the garden of American popular culture: he tried to peddle the idea that the Mansons –– or people like them –– had murdered his family. Hence the talk of pigs, acid, and the word written in blood.  The question for the historian, then, is obvious: how singular were the Manson murders? Were they, in reality, the product of one madman’s dark vision, or did they emerge from countercultural currents that ran deeper than Charles Manson –– that had, indeed, brought Manson himself screaming to the surface of the popular American imagination?  Season One episodes drop every TuesdayFollow onInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelookingglass_podcast/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/thelookingglasstruecrimepodcastTikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@thelookingglasstruecrimeYouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@thelookingglasstruecrimeEpisode 2 CastAnais Morgan as Bernadine Dohrn  – https://www.instagram.com/anaisrmorgan/Score and Sound Design – Dustin Morgan - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4082792/Follow Dustin onInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/dustinmorganofficial/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/dustin.morgan.5815Artwork – Jason 71Follow Jason onInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/jason71Host – Matthew Kraig KellyFollow Matthew onInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/matthewkraigkelly/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/matthewkraig.kelly.9LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-kraig-kelly-0b9b75127/Contactthelookingglasspodcast@protonmail.com
Episode 1: JEFF JEFF JEFF
Dec 29 2022
Episode 1: JEFF JEFF JEFF
In the pre-dawn hours of February 17, 1970, military police on the Fort Bragg army base, in North Carolina, received a panicked phone call from a man identifying himself as Cpt. Jeffrey MacDonald. Struggling to get the words out, MacDonald haltingly and breathlessly repeated his address –– 544 Castle Drive –– along with the word “stabbed.” When the MPs arrived at 544 Castle Drive minutes later, they encountered a scene of staggering brutality. MacDonald’s wife and two young daughters had been hacked and beaten to death in their respective bedrooms, there was blood on the walls and ceiling of the apartment, and someone had written the word “PiG,” in blood, on the headboard of the bed in the master bedroom. On seeing that word, “PiG,” military investigators all had the same thought: “PiG” is what had been written in blood on Sharon Tate’s front door six months earlier, after the Manson Family had slaughtered Tate and her houseguests on Cielo Drive, in Los Angeles. Had the Manson Family come to North Carolina? If Jeffrey MacDonald was to be believed, perhaps they had. MacDonald told investigators that a group of at least three men and one woman had broken into the apartment and attacked him and his family. Although these assailants had stabbed and beaten MacDonald, leaving him with a partially collapsed lung, they had left him alive after knocking him unconscious.  Was the story MacDonald told investigators true? How should we go about answering that question? Follow us through the door of these questions and into the wild world of the Jeffrey MacDonald case, where things are not always as they seem.
