Our Editor's Take

Ashley Flowers, the host of The Deck Investigates podcast, has dedicated her life to true crime. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller crime thriller All Good People Here. She created and hosted the popular podcast Crime Junkie, as well as other shows like The Deck. Flowers even founded a nonprofit to support families of victims of unsolved crimes. So it makes sense that she'll spend most of her days reviewing articles about old murders.

But when Flowers saw an article about a murder in a tiny town in Indiana, she didn't expect it to take over her life. Out of curiosity, she reached out to the victim's daughters on Facebook. She had no idea she would spend the next two years living and breathing this case. The Deck Investigates podcast shows the results of Flowers' dedication.

The Deck Investigates follows Flowers's journey to Argus, Indiana. Along with her reporter, Emily, the two visit what seems like an idyllic Midwest town. It's a place where cornfields surround every house, and people pop over to say hello. It's a place that, especially in 1984, felt like the safest spot to raise a family. But the more Flowers asked questions, the more she kept uncovering secrets. The more secrets she revealed, the more unsettling the story became.

Over 15 tense episodes, the story of Darlene Hulse's murder becomes more clear. The podcast host discovers evidence about this decades-old cold case that could have solved it right then and there. But for some reason, authorities overlooked it. On top of that, Flowers learns that the person responsible may have been hiding in plain sight. The answers could be much closer to home than anyone ever wanted to believe.
