Our Editor's Take

The Updated Autopsy Report podcast is about the video game Ace Attorney. Hosts Ben and Dessy are longtime fans of the adventure game. The two have played every part of the game and its sequels, and loved every minute. They enjoyed it so much that they wanted to share it with their friends Tiago and Rose, who had never seen it before. So they decided to do it over a podcast, where the four talk about every part of the game at length.

Ace Attorney may not be what some people think of when it comes to video games. Players of the visual novel adventure game take the role of a defense attorney. Their goal is to defend their clients in court and help get a “not guilty” verdict. Like a real-life courtroom, they question witnesses and try to figure out who is lying. They have to examine evidence and find inconsistencies. It's a puzzle game of sorts, where in the end, based on the player's performance, the judge gives a verdict. The Updated Autopsy Report podcast features the hosts playing along.

Each case in the game usually spans several days. So the Updated Autopsy Report podcast is also split into parts. In each one, the two novices get familiar with the cases while the two fanatics chime in with more insider knowledge. Since the game's origin is in Japanese, there's always much to discuss. Ben and Dessy will often have an insight about a localization that got lost in translation. Or how, in the original game, the plot was completely different. They even do research to get the developers' and localizers' opinions of the games.

As the hosts of Updated Autopsy Report go through the game, Tiago and Rose get to know the format more. The debates then start to focus on wider issues. They discuss issues like the prison system and corruption in the legal system. The cases get more and more intertwined. This adds to the fun of solving them and figuring out all the hidden surprises. Video game fans may enjoy playing along with this podcast.
