Hope After Child Loss

The Empty Chair Endeavor

An outreach of The Empty Chair Endeavor designed to support and equip survivors of child loss in rediscovering life, hope, and joy after unspeakable tragedy. Additionally, our mission involves educating the public about the life altering impact the death of a child has upon survivors, both parents and siblings, and equipping them to better support and minister to them. Join us as guests share their stories of heartbreaking loss and how God has shown up on their journeys to restore hope, meaning and purpose. The host, Greg Buffkin, lives with his wife Cathy in South Carolina. Because Cathy and Greg lost their beautiful son Ryan to suicide in 2015, they understand the trauma and pain of losing a child. On a journey that began 8 years ago out of unspeakable trauma and brokenness, GOD has brought them through to a place of restoration, hope and joy with a passion to help fellow survivors on their journeys.

A Conversation with Tim Challies, Nick's dad
How is a parent supposed to accept and begin processing the sudden, unexplainable death of their child? Healthy 20 years don’t just die suddenly without warning or symptoms of some sort. Sadly, a phone call brought this devastating news to Tim Challies and his family on November 3, 2020. His precious son Nick, engaged to be married, and working towards a seminary degree, passed away suddenly while participating in a school activity. In this episode, Tim, a noted author, speaker, and blogger talks with me about the impact of this unspeakable loss, and how GOD shows up in our places of deepest pain and suffering to bring us hope and comfort. As a way of processing his grief, Tim wrote, “Seasons of Sorrow”, a book that captured the first year of his grief journey from fall to summer, and is available from all major book outlets. What happened over the next few hours would forever profoundly alter Terry’s and his family’s lives. In this episode, Terry and I talk about the heart wrenching loss of his precious son that day, how GOD lovingly revealed Himself in the pain, and put him on a journey of healing and restoration, both spiritually and emotionally. Navigating the Nightmare of Suicide with Stephanie Carducci, Daniel's Mom

A Dad’s Journey Through Miscarriage with Eric Schumacher

A Dad’s Journey Through Miscarriage with Eric Schumacher
The death of a child at any age is a traumatic, unspeakable loss for parents. All too often, however, the emotional, mental, and even physical pain suffered by parents as a result of miscarriage or stillbirth isn't afforded the same level of compassion or understanding as loss from other causes. In this episode, author, pastor, and podcast host, Eric Schumacher joins me to discuss the impact such a loss has had upon him and his wife Jenny, not just once, but four (4) times. If you have ever experienced such a loss, I believe this is an important discussion for you to hear and share with others, because so many parents like you suffer this loss in silence. Rarely will you hear miscarriage discussed in a public forum by two men, and equally rare, find a book written on the subject by a man from the perspective of a husband and dad, such as Eric's book, Ours: Biblical Comfort for Men Grieving Miscarriage. We hope you"ll be encouraged as you listen! A Conversation with Danielle Duffey, Blake's mom
The death of a child is so heart wrenching that it often leaves parents feeling as though they might suffocate under the weight of the grief. We desperately want answers about why it happened. How do we process such trauma and begin to navigate through the grief when there are no answers? Join me as Danielle Duffey sits down and shares the story of losing her sweet, beautiful 17 month old son, Blake, to a very rare condition known as Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). Unlike SIDS, this rare disorder strikes approximately only 1 of every 100,000 children aged 1 - 18 years, and without very much understanding of the condition. We hope you’ll listen as Danielle talks about how GOD has used journaling to help her process and navigate her now 7 year grief journey and experience healing along the way.Danielle is currently the host of her own podcast, The Mission Mama, the author of Gratitude Through Grief A 90 Day Journey, available through Amazon and Etsy, an Ambassador for the SUDC Foundation, as well as having her own blog called Healing through Journaling: A Mother’s Journey of Rediscovery after Loss. A Conversation with Jessika Sanders, Founder and President of Praying Through Ministries.org
Jan 9 2024
A Conversation with Jessika Sanders, Founder and President of Praying Through Ministries.org
When life takes an unexpected turn that leaves our comfortable, predictable world turned upside down, how do we respond? Listen as Jessika shares the story of having to face the fear of losing her premature baby boy during his 37 day stay in a hospital NICU followed a few weeks later with admission to the PICU. By GOD’s grace and mercy, along with skilled medical professionals, he survived and is a thriving, healthy boy today! Jessika would describe these as defining moments in her life as GOD allowed her glimpses into the fear, pain, and suffering so many parents experience in those specialized hospital units, because, as we know, not all of these stories end well. Some data indicate an average mortality rate as high as 10% within NICU’s. Out of this life changing experience, GOD gave Jessika a passion to minister to other parents with children in these sometimes lonely and frightening hospital settings, as well as parents grieving the death of a child. This passion would soon lead her to establish and lead Praying Through Ministries, as well as co-author a soon to be released book entitled, “In His Hands: Prayers for Your Child or Baby in a Medical Crisis” along with Eric Schumacher. For Derek and Becky Farr, it came on September 28, 2021 when they received the news that their beloved son, Micah, had been killed in an early morning traffic accident at the young age of 27. Join our conversation as Derek and I discuss the impact losing Micah has had on his and his family's lives, his faith, and how GOD has so lovingly been restoring all the broken pieces. This story is one of GOD's kindness and faithfulness in the face of unspeakable tragedy and pain, and one that, I believe, will leave you with the certain hope that GOD can restore meaning, purpose, and hope to you on your personal grief journey.   If you find our episodes meaningful and helpful, we invite you to follow us on your favorite podcast platform so that each new episode will be sent to you automatically. For Luis and Dora Perez, February 23, 2010 would forever alter their lives as they learned their  beautiful 23 year old son, Luis, Jr. had taken his own life. As in so many cases, there were no obvious warning signs or behaviors, intensifying the shock and trauma for parents, siblings, extended family, and friends left behind. With refreshing transparency, Luis and Dora talk with me about how GOD showed up in their dark journey of pain and disbelief keeping them from despair, and leading them through a season of healing and restoration. A Conversation with Jimmy Sprayberry, Lee's dad
One of life's greatest treasures and sources of joy is our children. They fill our homes with laughter and sometimes make us so proud we feel like we'll explode. And because they don't come with an instruction book, GOD often teaches us as we try to teach and instruct them. The Bible offers plenty of wisdom for parenting ......... but not so much for losing a child. In this episode, Jimmy Sprayberry and I talk about he and his wife, Sherry's  grief journey that began one fall day in October, 2006, when they received a call that their precious 22 year old son, Lee, had been tragically killed in a traffic accident. With emotions tempered by time, Jimmy's transparency and honesty offer a message filled with hope as he shares his personal struggles through years of deep grief to a place of renewed meaning, purpose, and joy through his relationship with Jesus Christ and the love and support of others.  If you find our episodes meaningful and helpful, we invite you to follow us on your favorite podcast platform so that each new episode will be sent to you automatically.
