Our Editor's Take

UK Black Pride: A Time Capsule Podcast celebrates Black and Brown queer joy. In August 2022, UK Black Pride became the world's biggest Black parade. It took years of collaborative work and effort to get it there. When it began in 2005, only 200 people joined the event. They were queer folks, most of them lesbians from the Caribbean and Africa. They came to the parade because they wished to feel liberated. In 2022, that number grew to 25,000 and was much more diverse, with Asian people joining the festivities.

This limited-edition podcast series brings the listener on an empowering and emotional journey. It's a joyful narrative that explores how this event became a phenomenon. It captures the historical significance of UK Black Pride. Furthermore, it seeks to immortalize it for future generations.

To understand how UK Black Pride became so influential, one must learn its origins. It began with Black women who loved other women, as Lady Phyll explains in the podcast. She is the cofounder of the festival and came out as a lesbian in 2000. Back then, she felt like she was the only one. After a lot of research, she found that many others didn't receive any representation. Lady Phyll shares the story of a glorious bus ride to Southend-on-Sea that birthed the idea of UK Black Pride. She is only one in a row of influential people who contribute their knowledge to this podcast.

Throughout the podcast's eight episodes, host Aiwan Obinyan creates a fascinating narrative. She explores the critical link between Pride and the right to protest in the UK. She studies the significance of family for Black queer people, whether it's blood or chosen. The host talks about building a community and supporting healing and protection.

Each episode of UK Black Pride: A Time Capsule Podcast includes interviews with allies and members of the Black LGBTQIA+ community. They talk about the struggles, but they make sure to emphasize the triumphs. They do so to show young queer people of color how far the world has come and what still needs to change.
