The Cold War: What We Saw is a podcast series about one of modern history's most significant periods. The Cold War was an era fueled with tension. Poor relations between the United States and the Soviet Union followed World War II. This Cold War lasted approximately 45 years. It ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. In those years, the world saw significant threats and changes. Competing political ideologies led to conflicts between the East and the West. This podcast explores this historical period in a unique way. It examines the time from the viewpoint of people who lived through it. Listeners learn what it was like to live amidst these historical events. The podcast also explores why they still matter today.

Podcast episodes are approximately one hour long. Each episode focuses on one key event during the Cold War. The podcast explores the "Iron Curtain," which split Europe in two. It also discusses the conflict between communist and capitalist ideals. The series explores the Cold War's impact on countries such as Germany, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. It also shares the relevance of the Cold War in modern society.

Most episodes feature one narrator. However, some also feature guests who lived through that period. One guest is Peter Robinson, a former speechwriter for Ronald Reagan. Peter is the writer of the famous Berlin Wall Speech. In his speech in June 1987, President Reagan called on Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall!” The podcast host speaks to Peter about writing the speech and its significance today.
