The gym has hosted several powerlifting meets to raise funds for local non-profits. Currently, NRFC is raising money to eliminate financial barriers for veterans to have 24/7 access to the NewRoots gym.  Tim is the owner/operator of Avail Tattoo Co. which has won best tattoo shop in FLG every year since 2016. LFG as Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer with the 95 Windows launch moves (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmc7ht6tV4b/) sit with the legendary Hank Hassell of Cline Library lore. Hank is a librarian and curator for Harvard of the West's Cline Library where he is charged with cataloguing special collections as they become available to the library. In this, he holds a deep love and fondness for the history of the region - particularly Glen Canyon. He curated a special exhibit titled, "Images of a Lost World: Glen Canyon on the Colorado." The exhibit itself features 56 photographs of Glen Canyon and its tributaries before the magnificent canyon complex was flooded by the waters impounded by Glen Canyon Dam. The exhibit will be available to tour through July 2023. In this episode, alongside sharing about the exhibit, Hank discusses some important life experiences, how he found himself in Flagstaff, what led to taking a deep interest in the history of Glen Canyon, and his book, "Rainbow Bridge: An Illustrated History." Join Jake Peralta and Charles Boyle as they go #beyondFLG with Adrian Herder, who is the marketing and media manager for the non-profit organization Tó Nizhóní Ání which is the Navajo language for Sacred Water Speaks. Adrian is from the Black Mesa region of the Navajo Nation and currently resides in Flagstaff, AZ. He served as a volunteer with TNA for seven years before officially joining the team in 2020. Adrian has a background as an accomplished potter and artist, showing his work in several notable shows and art markets. In addition, he has designed many flyers, posters, and logos for businesses and organizations. Outside of TNA, Adrian has enjoyed running, taking photos of Diné life, and he admits to a consideration of mountain biking. In this interview, we cover Adrian’s work with TNA and the important work that TNA is doing through education while simultaneously holding Peabody Coal accountable for the harm they’ve caused to Navajo land and people. Join Harry Potter and Ron Weasley as they go #beyondFLG with Dawn Kish, photographer, conservationist, and documentary filmmaker. The subject of Dawn's work includes documenting stories of indigenous folks in the Southwest, hanging off walls in Yosemite, and other various adventure activities. Some of her clients include Arizona Highways, Grand Canyon Trust, National Geographic, Patagonia, and Sports Illustrated. She also worked as a river guide for the USGS and describes the “river as being a part of her, it is in her heart and soul.” As a film director, Dawn directed the short film, “Can’t Beat This Place for Fun” which was shown at the Mountain Film Fest in 2021. This film was an ode to a local boat shop that keeps the tradition of wooden boat building alive while honoring the story of Martin Litton’s Grand Canyon Dory. Currently, Dawn is in the process of shooting a new film titled, “Tad’s Emerging World.” A super compelling idea in which Dawn is documenting the epic landscape of Glen Canyon using an old Crown Graphic 4x5 camera, which was used by Tad Nichols to document Glen Canyon in his book, “Glen Canyon: Images of Lost World.” In this episode, Dawn discusses the Tad project including its origins and what its been like creating thus far, what got her into photography, and her connection to Flagstaff. In this episode, Laurel discusses her experience as a journalist, secondhand exposure to trauma and what led to starting the 2Lives podcast. Prior to digital marketing, Rand worked in the service industry and moved to the world of production in 2003 working as a production assistant on the MTV Video & Music Awards shows. Since then, he has managed and produced over 1400 concerts, festivals, fundraisers, galas and special events. He co-founded, owned and operated Flagstaff’s Green Room, a music venue and bar in Flagstaff, AZ for 7 years and acted as GM of The Pepsi Amphitheater in Flagstaff for another 3 years. He also founded and produced 3 community/music festivals in Flagstaff including The Flagstaff Hullabaloo, Flagstaff Cornucopia and Kaleidoscope Kamp Out. In late 2015, he started Mountain Mojo Group, a marketing firm with partner Austin Leggett. In his spare time he has sat on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, The Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy, The Flagstaff Music Festival/Firefly Gatherings, mentored for Big Brothers, Big Sisters and participates in volunteer opportunities city wide. All of this is secondary of course to traveling and reconnecting with his Friends and Family. Have you heard about the local artist who inspired high school art students to win a national Vans Custom Culture contest? That happened in real life right here in Flagstaff, AZ. Today, we're going #beyondFLG with Kayley Quick, an artist and graphic design/art teacher at THE Flagstaff High School. #GoEagles. Kayley is a 2009 graduate of Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. As a teacher, she seeks to connect with her students and sees the roles of a teacher as one that can have a lasting impact. (This might include taking a rubber duck to the face #eyesup). As an artist, Kaley finds value in being a self-described "professional weirdo" who enjoys a variety of mediums and artistic outlets. In 2019, she was part of the FHS team of artists that included Alyssa Williams and Nicole Dougherty that won the Vans Custom Culture contest, which brought in $75,000 to the school. Kayley won Best of FLG local artist in 2018 and 2020 and was chosen by the Arizona Daily Sun as one of the top 20 people under the age of 40 in Flagstaff for her contributions in teaching and art in the community. Jason, like many other well-intentioned folks, found himself in Flagstaff, AZ in the early 1990’s when starting college at the Harvard of the West (NAU). Following his degree, he worked in a variety of settings and somehow, someway, found himself in the domain of slinging coolers. In 2010, he founded Canyon Coolers and a few years later, he went all in with the business. Since then, Canyon Coolers has won a variety of awards and remains as one of the top products when compared to its competitors for ice retention. Join Marv and Harry (aka the wet bandits, aka the sticky bandits, aka Cody Nice Nice and Dan) go #BeyondFLG with Gretta and Kyle Miller, the extremely talented married duo that founded the band, Tow’rs. Gretta, a transplant from Las Vegas, NV, met Kyle, a Flagstaffian/flagpolian/flagstafferino, at the place where knowledge and romance are not found by accident - the Northern Arizona University of the Southwest. NAU. #GoLumberJays. While dating, Gretta and Kyle began playing music together. This eventually led to creating music and forming the band, Tow’rs. (Which, we do not cover in this interview why they spell it the way they do. I believe we were operating under a strict threat to not ask that question. Plus, that information can be found in a host of other interviews they’ve obliged to in the past). Tow’rs initially consisted of Gretta & Kyle, Emma Crislip, Kyle Keller, and Kory Miller. Their first album, which was self-titled dropped in 2014. Since that time, the band has released four other full-titled albums and various singles including “Love Who You Love” which was featured on an album titled,” Serenade” which came out earlier in 2021 and was put together by various artists to celebrate and empower LGBTQ people of faith. In this interview, Gretta and Kyle play live versions of Swaying Evergreens and Curious Woman, two of their songs from the album “The Holly and the Ivy,” which they won a Viola award for in 2021. Speaking of Viola Awards, Tow’rs have won like, a million of thems. Tow’rs have toured with a variety of bands including most recently, The Lone Bellow and have a tour slated for early 2022 where they will open for Joshua Radin (Ray-den). Have you ever been curious about what it would be like to take a job in a town you've never lived in to guide trips on a river you've never floated while completing a Master's degree and stepping up to a position as the director of a burgeoning organization? Today, we’re going #BeyondFLG with Emma Wharton, the Executive Director for Grand Canyon Youth (GCY), and she knows exactly what that is like. GCY is a non-profit organization that offers educational outdoor expeditions that connect young people to the transformative power of the rivers and canyons of the southwest. Emma, found herself in Flagpole after earning a Master’s Degree from the University of Washington (#GoHuskies) in Social Work with an emphasis in Community Development. Emma also earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, where she studied negotiation service-learning and environmental education. Emma became the Executive Director of Grand Canyon Youth in 2003 and has played a pivotal role in the development of the non-profit in terms of its value-based growth. She contributed to the organization’s success in working through the effects of the CVD 19 pandemic's effects on the very type of service they engage with. Three words she would use to describe GCY are community, place, and discovery. If Emma could offer any advice to youth, she would say, “Remember to connect with the natural world, your community, and yourself as often as you can.” Emma says her favorite river to float is the one that she is on and this could not be a better representation for how she lives her life generally #comewhatmay. Shannon is a sport psychology and mental performance consultant with Hypo2 which is a sport management organization centered around a world-renowned altitude training in Flagstaff, AZ. Shannon, a Canadien transplant, had a career in three-day eventing, which is an equestrian sport that involves dressage, cross country, and show jumping. Following her athletic career in three day eventing, Shannon earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Thompson Rivers University located in Kamloops BC, Canadia. #GoWolfPack. She then found herself taking a great interest in positive psychology and ended up at UPenn. #GoQuakers. While at UPenn, she studied under Angela Duckworth, the famous author of Grit and earned her Master’s Degree in Applied Positive Psychology, which is the science of human flourishing and high achievement. Thankfully, Shannon chose to bring her talents to FLG where she trains elite athletes in mental performance. Brian Petersen is an Associate Professor in Geography, Planning, and Recreation in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at NAU (Harvard of the West). Brian earned his BS In Environmental Science from the University of Idaho, followed by Masters Degrees in Forest Resources and Public Administration from the University of Washington. He ultimately earned his PhD in Environmental Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz (Go Banana Slugs)! Brian's research focuses broadly on the social dimensions of climate change. He recently co-authored a book with Diana Stuart and Ryan Gunderson called "Climate Change Solutions: Overcoming the Capital-Climate Contradiction." His work also focuses on wilderness, public lands, biodiversity conservation, sustainability, and city planning. Brian has produced dozens of journal publications related to these topics. He recently served as the Chair of the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Commission for three years and speaks to his experience on this episode. For this episode, Led Tasso and Coach Beard (aka Cody and Dan) go #beyondFLG with a Flagstaff legend, Neil Weintraub. Neil landed in Flagstaff in the mid 80’s after attending college in Iowa. He worked at the Museum of Northern Arizona prior to landing a job with the national forest, where he worked and recently retired from after a 30-year career. Much of his work was dedicated to preserving indigenous sites and restoring land sites in Northern Arizona. Beyond his work as an archaeologist, Neil is a founder of Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association, often referred to as NATRA. As such, he organizes weekly group runs on Saturday mornings. He also acts as a race director for various trail races that bring together hundreds of runners for not only a great time on the trails, or partying afterwards, but also to raise funds for Flagstaff Big Brothers Big Sisters. In this episode we learn more about Neil's aptitude with organizing runs (hint: it has something to do with partying and connecting), about his experience in restoring and bringing awareness to important indigenous and environmental sites in Northern Arizona, and we scratch the surface of the dark history of Shaky Drakes and Flagstaff in the mid 80's. Neil is truly one of a kind in his outgoing nature and willingness to give and contribute to something he views as greater than his own self.
