In this third and final installment of our interview series with 2X ASUN COY, the Richmond Spiders Head Coach, Dan Chemotti, we hear of Coach's pillars of success for building a powerfully consistent program. After over fifty interviews with top college coaches and skills trainers, Chemotti unearths a concept we have not heard before on the show and it makes absolute sense as to why it is a must for any lacrosse player to implement if they'd like to achieve high levels of excellence. Listen in and learn from this grand lax master! And we don’t stop there. Having led the Spiders to the conference championship game in all eleven of his seasons at the helm, we delve into how recruiting the “right” players, not simply the most talented, is essential to Richmond’s success. Learn what ingredients top college coaches are looking for out on the recruiting trail as they gather the ingredients for a stew that must be tasty and yet pack a punch. And finally, our roving reporter, Steve Gresalfi, hops on board to deliver some intriguing and quite questionable listener questions. In particular he delves into how Richmond became the Spiders and what the breakfast food options were like in Hanover, N.H. compared to Queens, NY. This is another jam packed episode that you won’t want to miss. S2 E11. Chemotti's Web: The Spider's 2X Conference COY & His Iron Lattice of Consistency, Part II.
In this second installment of our interview series with 2X Sun Conference COY, Dan Chemotti, the head men’s lacrosse coach of the Richmond Spiders, tells us what inspired him to pursue the coaching profession. One factor was the coaches he had learned through over the years and he admits to having had coaches that anyone in the game of lacrosse would envy: Mike Mesere of West Genesee HS (91% Career Winning Percentage), Mike Pressler of Duke, Bryant, and the PLL, Joe Albericci of West Point, and Charlie Toomey of Loyola to name a few. He also describes what it was like at his very first college coaching job, which Mike Pressler helped him attain, with Coach Rick Sowell of Dartmouth. And how this man had a profound influence on him along with his powerful tenant of absolute truthfulness. He was someone Coach Chemotti would follow to St. John’s before taking a position at Loyola College in Baltimore.Next, we hear how Chemotti, who coached at Loyola over a six year span, helped generate and was witness to, one of the most transformative seasons in the history of D1 men’s lacrosse. In 2012, under head coach Charlie Toomey, the Greyhounds, who had not made the NCAA tournament in four years, despite having recorded four 10 win seasons, went on to an 18-1 record and won the Men’s Lacrosse National Championship in 2012, the first and only in school history. And finally Coach Chemotti gives us the details on how he transformed a club program to a legitimate conference and NCAA tournament contender and has continued to experience success over an eleven year span. This is a jam packed episode that you won’t want to miss. S2 E10. Chemotti's Web; The Spider's 2X Conference COY & His Iron Lattice of Consistency, Part I.
We are excited to bring you the first installment of our interview series with two time Southern Conference Coach of the Year, Head Coach of the Richmond Spiders, Dan Chemotti. In this episode we delve into Chemotti’s early years as the son of a high school basketball coach, with an older brother who played both basketball and lacrosse, growing up in the Syracuse area of Central New York. Dan describes how he went on to play lacrosse for the legendary coach Mike Mesere at nearby perennial powerhouse West Genesse High School and how he became the Central New York player of the year as a senior. Next we discussed his difficult decision to leave home (and an offer from Syracuse) behind and go to Duke to play for Mike Pressler and a young coach Joe Alberici. While at Duke he would help the team win two ACC titles and make it to the NCAA quarterfinals twice as he was elected captain of the team in his senior year.  We review how he came to the decision to pursue a career in coaching and go in depth on the influence his coaching mentors such as Coaches Mesere, Pressler, Alberici and Charlie Toomey had on this decision. S2 E9. Acorns Don't Fall Far From The Tree; DIII COY, Steve Koudelka & Brandon Childs, Part III.
In this third and final installment of our discussion with two DIII Coaches of the Year, Steve Koudelka of Lynchburg and Brandon Childs of York, we round out our interview series with several intriguing questions. We start off hearing what exactly these two highly successful coaches look for when they are recruiting student-athletes for their programs. They review what skills, levels of athleticism, and intangibles they are looking for year in and year out. Coach Childs discusses how he was fortunate to have a PLL All Star, Paul Drenner, on his staff for three years at York. What impressed him the most was how Drenner's  teaching style was primarily focused on sound fundamentals and some other elements you'll want to learn about in this podcast. After some prodding from co-host Ron Dalgleish-the Big Dawg, the coaches discuss the benefits of DIII lacrosse. The smaller school, the stadium right on campus, the exciting atmosphere. Letting players play in a more relaxed, free flowing environment and many more mentioned inside the interview. All this along with another round of our rapid fire recruiting questions. Yet again, another episode you will not want to miss.!If you enjoy this episode and want to hear more, you can support the show by subscribing,  telling a friend, and writing a review. S2 E8. Acorns Don't Fall Far From the Tree; DIII COYs Steve Koudelka & Brandon Childs, Part II.
In this second installment, of our three part interview series, with two DIII Coaches of the Year, Steve Koudelka and Brandon Childs, we get into brass tacks regarding college lacrosse recruiting. Coach Koudelka describes how his opinions were formed over many years by lacrosse greats such as Dom Starsia and Dave Urick. He also elaborates by describing a key age for players to really hone their skills and it's probably not the age you'd imagine. Of course, Coach Childs reveals his secret sauce but also goes onto describe what it is about Coach Koudelka that has not only made him successful but how he has imparted that knowledge to former players and assistant coaches which has resulted in what many have described as the most impressive coaching tree in DIII lacrosse. These two also give us a peek behind the curtain so to speak as they give us some insight into what college coaches do for fun and how their competitive juices flow even when they're not on the job.If you enjoy this episode and want to hear more, you can support the show by subscribing,  telling a friend, and writing a review. Our first guest, Steve Koudelka, established the Lynchburg men's lacrosse program as a national powerhouse in his nearly three decades on the Hornets’ sidelines. Since his arrival prior to the 1997 season, he has recorded an overall record of 337-145, including 24 winning seasons. Lynchburg has advanced to the NCAA tournament 16 times with our guest at the helm and he has hoisted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship trophy nine times. He was named the USILA Division III Coach of the Year in 2015. Coach K. played his college lacrosse at Gettysburg where he was a 2X All American goalie. He went on to become an assistant at his alma mater before taking the head coaching job at Lynchburg. Our next guest,  Brandon Childs, became only the fourth head men’s lacrosse coach at York College. In 12 years at York, he’s led the Green and White to a record of 176-51 and a .796 win percentage. The Spartans have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 8 times, including the school’s first trip to the “Final Four” in 2022. And with our next guest as their field general, York has advanced all the way to the National Quarterfinals four out of the last six years. He has been named the CAC / MAC Coach of the Year six times and in 2018 he was honored as The Division III Coach of The Year.Brandon Childs was a 2X USILA All-American attackman at Lynchburg while he was also a Scholar All-American as a senior. In this first installment of our interview series, Steve talks about his relationship with his mentor, Hank Janczyk, who was the head coach at Gettysburg for over forty years. Koudelka is also thankful for the strong and positive influence of Fred Opie, a Team USA defenseman and Syracuse All American, who was the defensive coordinator at Gettysburg. Coach Childs discusses his early days in lacrosse, making the case for what he calls playing on the best U13 team of all time while growing up in Baltimore county. Listen in and see how your team stacks up against his roster! He also describes his playing days at St. Pauls and his warm first impressions of Coach Koudelka and his staff at Lynchburg.Steve rounds out the segment describing a classic for the ages, “Top Star” summer camp where, as a young coach, he was able to learn from and interact with legends of the game such as Jim Berkeman, Dave Urick, and Sid Jamieson. This is an interview rich with history and the great camaraderie that’s become part of the game of lacrosse. If you enjoy this episode and want to hear more, you can support the NEW BOOK!Inside the Recruiting Game: Insights From College Lacrosse Coaches-available for FREE on the JML Training App at:https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608-And available on Amazon.com as an Ebook and paperbackLink to the FREE JML Mini Course-now with a FREE defense course taught by Lars Tiffany and a FREE Mini goalie course taught by Kip Turner- on our own App: https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608Check out our Patreon page with the link below:patreon.com/GetTheLaxScoopAnd take a look at our new virtual storefront here: jml-online-store.company.siteLink to Video of the Week: Master The 5 Best Dodges From the Wing!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7LDOcQQ6Q&t=88sBlazing Shots... on the Run!https://youtu.be/XiptPlM63oQCheck us out...On YouTube @jaymcmahonlax23On Instagram @jaymcmahonlax23On Facebook @: facebook.com/jmcmahonlax23. S2 E6. The Brothers Byrne; Harvard Head Coach Gerry Byrne & UVA HOFer Steve Byrne, Part III.
This is the third and final installment of our interview series with Coaches Gerry and Steve Byrne. In this episode Steve describes what it was like, after graduating from UVA, to play for the famous North Hempstead Lacrosse Club for Harvey Cohen. A team that Steve states “Was always 2nd banana to the Long Island Lacrosse Club,” and how one season they banded together and beat them to win a Long Island championship. “It just about brought Harvey to tears,” states Steve. Coach Gerry Byrne discusses how he made the major life decision to leave all the success he helped build at Notre Dame behind and strike out on his own to become the head coach at Harvard. He explains the principles that guided him and the desire to help teach a diverse group of young men, who come from the full spectrum of the socioeconomic scale, the benefits of working together towards a common goal. He reports he loves to teach young people that with hard work, dedication, humility, and a focus on continuous improvement they can overcome adversity, and become even better than they ever thought they could. Thus far, based on the improvement he’s made to the Harvard lacrosse program, he’s well on his way to fulfilling that promise.  Steve Byrne next explains how lacrosse was “Literally a life line,” for a guy traveling from city to city as he worked for General Electric. When he moved to Dallas, TX, lacrosse connections provided him with not only a team to play on but also a roommate who became a lifelong friend he is still in touch with to this day. If you enjoy this episode and want to hear more, you can support the show by joining our Patreon page, checking out our online store (links listed below) , subscribing, telling a friend, and writing a review… we’d really appreciate it!NEW BOOK!Inside the Recruiting Game: Insights From College Lacrosse Coaches-available for FREE on the JML Training App at:https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608-And available on Amazon.com as an Ebook and paperbackLink to the FREE JML Mini Course-now with a FREE defense course taught by Lars Tiffany and a FREE Mini goalie course taught by Kip Turner- on our own App: https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608Check out our Patreon page with the link below:patreon.com/GetTheLaxScoopAnd take a look at our new virtual storefront here: jml-online-store.company.siteLink to Video of the Week: Master The 5 Best Dodges From the Wing!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7LDOcQQ6Q&t=88sBlazing Shots... on the Run!https://youtu.be/XiptPlM63oQCheck us out...On YouTube @jaymcmahonlax23On Instagram @jaymcmahonlax23On Facebook @: facebook.com/jmcmahonlax23. S2 E5. The Brothers Byrne; Harvard Head Coach Gerry Byrne & UVA HOFer Steve Byrne.
We’re excited to release our second installment of our three part interview series with coaches and brothers, Gerry and Steve Byrne. Gerry Byrne is the head coach at Harvard and his brother Steve was selected as one the top players in ACC history as a 3X All American defenseman for UVA and gold medalist for Team USA back in 1986. In this episode, Steve describes what it was like for him as a freshman at UVA in 1979 coming in from a public high school on Long Island. A bit of culture shock is quite the understatement. However, Steve would go on to have an amazing season often covering top teams’ #1 attackman, as he did against John Hopkins in that year’s national championship game which UVA lost in sudden death OT in front of 16,000 fans. Gerry states he was quite exceptional himself at UMass Amherst, as he was on the team that would record Coach Garber’s only losing season during his over thirty year career. Things did improve however, as he went on to play,  also as a defensemen, on more successful campaigns  where he was a 2X All New England selection and led the Minutemen to the NCAA quarterfinals in 1986. Steve also describes what it was like to play for the legendary Virginia head coach, Jim ‘Ace’ Adams. As you’ll hear, it was not easy but it was rewarding as this penultimate Southern Gentlemen taught the rough and tumble Long Islander valuable life lessons and awarded Steve a full scholarship after his breakout freshman season.  Coach Gerry Byrne also tells a classic story of how the Abott brothers, with Chris a player at archrival Brown and Robert, a top attackmen at UMass, placed a hefty wager on what would be their final game against each other and of their college lacrosse careers. As Brown had beaten UMass for three consecutive years, Chris was feeling over confident and bet it all that Brown would win the fourth contest. As you can imagine, they did not. Hear the resulting celebration as Gerry tells the tale in riveting fashion. This is another enlightening, fun, and dramatic interview you won’t want to miss! S2 E4. The Brothers Byrne; Harvard Head Coach Gerry Byrne & UVA HOFer Steve Byrne.
We’re so excited to release our interview with coaches and brothers, Gerry and Steve Byrne. The pair, along with their older brother and parents, grew up in Levittown, NY on Long Island with their older brother and parents in the nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties. Steve, older than Gerry by five years, states in his understated, tongue in cheek manner, that he attended the local public high school, Levittown Division, so his parents could save up their money for their favorite son, Gerry. That way Gerry could attend perennial powerhouse Chaminade, the private Catholic school in Nassau county. Gerry disputes whether or not he was the favorite son but is quick to point out there was no disputing what a great talent his older brother Steve was as the top recruited high school defensemen on Long Island back in 1979. Steve became a 3X All American at Virginia and eventually was a starter on defense for Team USA helping them win gold in Toronto, Canada in 1986.Gerry states he was quite exceptional himself, as he was the only player at Chaminade who tried out for the lacrosse team in a thick Irish sweater. Despite his bewildering choice of apparel, he did make the team and enjoyed a solid high school career. He went on to play,  also as a defensemen, at Umass Amherst where he was a 2X All New England selection and lead the Minutemen to the NCAA quarterfinals in 1986. Gerry Byrne, of course, would go on to a stellar coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame until 2019. Since 2020 has been the head coach at Harvard. Harvard is currently 6-0 and ranked #12 in the nation, one of the highest rankings the program has ever achieved in the NCAA era. In this first episode, the brothers Byrne describe their upbringing and how lacrosse became a big part of both their lives growing up leading Steve to the University of Virginia and Gerry to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Steve describes his days on grounds in Charlottesville in raucous fashion as he and a number of Long Island lacrosse players clash with the local inhabitants. This is an enlightening, fun, and dramatic interview you won’t want to miss! NEW BOOK!Inside the Recruiting Game: Insights From College Lacrosse Coaches-available for FREE on the JML Training App at:https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608-And available on Amazon.com as an Ebook and paperbackLink to the FREE JML Mini Course-now with a FREE defense course taught by Lars Tiffany and a FREE Mini goalie course taught by Kip Turner- on our own App: https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608Check out our Patreon page with the link below:patreon.com/GetTheLaxScoopAnd take a look at our new virtual storefront here: jml-online-store.company.siteLink to Video of the Week: Master The 5 Best Dodges From the Wing!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7LDOcQQ6Q&t=88sBlazing Shots... on the Run!https://youtu.be/XiptPlM63oQCheck us out...On YouTube @jaymcmahonlax23On Instagram @jaymcmahonlax23On Facebook @: facebook.com/jmcmahonlax23. S2 E3. Reunited & It Feels So Good. Coaches Lars Tiffany and Kevin Cassese, Part III.
In this third and final installment of our interview series these two lacrosse legends discuss how their twenty year relationship, which started back in 2004 when the two coached together at Stony Brook, has culminated in Kevin Cassese electing to join head coach Lars Tiffany as the associate head coach at the University of Virginia for the 2024 season and beyond.Coach Cassese discusses one of the main elements that attracted him to the opportunity at UVA; coaching elite players. He references his experience playing with coaching elite players such as Paul Rabil and the Powell brothers for Team USA. He describes what it has been like to work with the elite players of this perennial powerhouse that is UVA lacrosse, detailing his first sit down meeting with Connor Shellenberger and how impressed he was when the three X First Team All American’s first words were “How do I get better Coach?”Coach Tiffany reviews some of the similarities and some of the differences between Coach Sean Kirwan-the former Virginia offensive coordinator who is now a head coach at Dartmouth-and Coach Kevin Cassese’s approach to offense and offensive tempo. Tiffany also shares some humorous yet awkward moments when Cassese, who after being a successful head coach at Lehigh for sixteen years and is accustomed to calling the shots, has done just that at team meetings and practices more than a few times. All and all this is another exciting interview that gives us a real behind the scenes view of the way two great coaches work together for the success of their team. S2 E2. Reunited & It Feels So Good, Coaches Lars Tiffany and Kevin Cassese, Part II.
In this interview these two lacrosse legends, Lars Tiffany & Kevin Cassese, discuss how their twenty year relationship started back in 2004 when the two coached together at Stony Brook. They describe how their bond has grown stronger as the years have passed, culminating in Cassese electing to join head coach Lars Tiffany as the associate head coach at the University of Virginia for the 2024 season. In this second installment of our three part series, Coach Cassese discusses what it was like to work with Coach John Danowski following the Duke Lacrosse scandal, as he helped the team get to the national championship game once again, coming up just one goal shy of tying what was naturally an extremely close tilt v. Johns Hopkins. Coach C also reviews his experience playing for Team USA in 2002, 2006, 2010, and as an assistant coach in 2016. He notes that the 2010 experience was especially gratifying as he was able to play again for his former coach at Duke, Mike Pressler, leading the team to gold as their captain, all done while being the head lacrosse coach at Lehigh! Our co-hosts inquire about Coach Tiffany’s own experience at the World Games, coaching the Haudneshoenee National team in the 2019 games in Israel as an assistant and then as the Head Coach in 2023. It’s another memorable episode that you won’t want to miss! If you enjoy this episode and want to hear more, you can support the show by subscribing, telling a friend, and writing a review, we’d really appreciate it!NEW BOOK!Inside the Recruiting Game: Insights From College Lacrosse Coaches-available for FREE on the JML Training App at:https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608-And available on Amazon.com as an Ebook and paperbackLink to the FREE JML Mini Course-now with a FREE defense course taught by Lars Tiffany and a FREE Mini goalie course taught by Kip Turner- on our own App: https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608Check out our Patreon page with the link below:patreon.com/GetTheLaxScoopAnd take a look at our new virtual storefront here: jml-online-store.company.siteLink to Video of the Week: Master The 5 Best Dodges From the Wing!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7LDOcQQ6Q&t=88sBlazing Shots... on the Run!https://youtu.be/XiptPlM63oQCheck us out...On YouTube @jaymcmahonlax23On Instagram @jaymcmahonlax23On Facebook @: facebook.com/jmcmahonlax23. Eventually his team would make it through a crucible of competition to win a Suffolk County title, followed by overtaking perennial powerhouse Garden City and eventually winning it all at Hofstra as he led Comsewogue High School to their first ever NY State championship.Coach Tiffany gives insight into his own high school experience on the outskirts of the Onondaga reservation in central New York. He also describes the qualities he observed in a young Coach Casse back when they worked together in 2004. And finally, Coach Cassese reviews what it was like to be coaching at his alma mater for his former coach, Mike Pressler, as the team went to their first ever national championship game in 2005. And what it was like the following year when the Duke Lacrosse Scandal broke and all the coaches and players endured one of the most infamous and highly publicized events in lacrosse history. Needless to say this is a riveting interview that you will not want to miss!NEW BOOK!Inside the Recruiting Game: Insights From College Lacrosse Coaches-available for FREE on the JML Training App at:https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608-And available on Amazon.com as an Ebook and paperbackLink to the FREE JML Mini Course-now with a FREE defense course taught by Lars Tiffany and a FREE Mini goalie course taught by Kip Turner- on our own App: https://jay-mcmahon-lacrosse.passion.io/checkout/79608Check out our Patreon page with the link below:patreon.com/GetTheLaxScoopAnd take a look at our new virtual storefront here: jml-online-store.company.siteLink to Video of the Week: Master The 5 Best Dodges From the Wing!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7LDOcQQ6Q&t=88sBlazing Shots... on the Run!https://youtu.be/XiptPlM63oQCheck us out...On YouTube @jaymcmahonlax23On Instagram @jaymcmahonlax23On Facebook @: facebook.com/jmcmahonlax23.
