Our Editor's Take

Cool Facts About Animals is a family podcast. It airs about once a week, with breaks for school holidays. Each episode lasts 20 to 35 minutes.

The hosts of Cool Facts About Animals are a mother-and-kids team. Along with them are Jaguar, a talking dog, and his pet spider monkey Lunch. To prepare for each podcast episode, the family researches an animal and picks out the ten most interesting facts about that animal. Then they interview a specialist who talks about the animal in great detail.

The podcast has had episodes on the arctic fox with Dr. Maarten Loonen. It interviewed Dr. Randall Voss on axolotls. Domestic cats got their own episode, too. Professor Monica Green talked about rats and the plague. National Geographic author Julie Beer provided listeners with tons of fascinating facts.

Cool Facts About Animals sometimes pits two animals against each other for an imaginary contest. Who would win between an anaconda and a saltwater crocodile? What about a T. Rex vs. an ankylosaurus? The kid hosts take turns reading cool facts about each animal. Then they discuss who they think would win that particular battle.

The podcast's goal is to educate kids about animals. But it also seeks to raise kids who care about the environment. It explains the issues and discusses what kids can do to help. "Cool Facts About Animals Visits the Redwoods" explains ecological balance. It explores how fragile a biome can be when threatened. "Mega Plastic Episode with Jenna Jambeck" is another such episode. Dr. Jambeck is an environmental engineer who won a MacArthur Fellowship. She came on the show to talk about the impact of plastics on the environment.

Cool Facts About Animals may appeal to kids who like animal-themed programming. Even the biggest of “know-it-alls” might learn something new.
